The Brother MFC-L2730DW is a compact monochrome laser all-in-one that prints, copies, scans and faxes, aimed at home and small offices. Brother now labels it discontinued, so the practical question is less whether the printer is capable on paper and more whether a specific unit, at a specific price and condition, is worth buying. This review is based on Brother’s published specifications. It includes no hands-on testing, so print quality, noise, reliability and cost per page are not judged here.
Availability comes first
Brother’s product page for the MFC-L2730DW marks the model as discontinued. The official pages do not give a discontinuation date, a current retail price, stock levels, or whether used or refurbished units are sold through any channel. Treat any listing as a leftover or secondhand purchase, and check the following before paying:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Seller identity and history: look at how long the seller has operated and how buyers have rated recent sales of printers and toner.
- Stated condition: new, open box, refurbished or used should be written in the listing. A unit described only as “working” tells you little.
- Included consumables: confirm whether the starter toner and drum are present. Brother’s starter toner is listed at about 700 pages, so a unit with a nearly empty starter cartridge will need a replacement soon.
- Price against running costs: compare the printer price with the price of the toner and drum you will need, since the printer is only one part of the outlay.
- Return window and warranty: confirm the return period and whether a used unit qualifies for the one-year limited warranty Brother lists. Brother’s support page for the MFCL2730DW links to the warranty statements.

Speed and what the 36 ppm figure assumes
Brother lists print speed at up to 36 pages per minute. The figure applies to one-sided printing, and the product page notes that reaching it requires changing a setting from the default. A duplex job will take longer per sheet than the headline number suggests. Brother’s first-page-out time, listed as a maximum of 8.5 seconds, is also a manufacturer figure rather than a measured result.

Duplex printing and paper handling
Automatic duplex printing is supported, so two-sided documents can be printed without manual flipping. The 250-sheet tray takes letter and legal paper. The manual feed takes a wider range of media, including envelopes and cardstock, which suits occasional one-off jobs rather than daily volume.
Volume guidance
Brother lists a recommended monthly print volume of up to 2,000 pages and a maximum monthly duty cycle of up to 15,000 pages. Treat these as guidance from the manufacturer. They are not a promise of output quality, service life, or consistent performance at the top of the range. A printer that is regularly pushed toward its duty cycle will need more frequent consumable replacement and maintenance.
Copying, scanning and faxing
Copying
Copying is monochrome, with a maximum resolution of 600 x 600 dpi, an ID copy mode, and reduction or enlargement from 25% to 400%. Duplex copying is not available. A two-sided original must be copied one side at a time, and each output sheet is single-sided.

Scanning
The scanner captures both black-and-white and color. Duplex scanning is not available, so the 50-sheet automatic document feeder reads one side per pass. Double-sided originals need to be turned over and fed again, which matters if you regularly scan contracts or forms printed on both sides.
Fax
The fax uses a 33.6 kbps modem and holds up to 500 pages in memory, as listed by Brother. The modem rate reflects an older fax standard, so expect fax transmission to be slower than a modern internet-based fax service. Fax is only useful if your line and your provider still support it.
Connectivity and operating systems
- Wireless: 802.11 b/g/n. The printer does not list 5 GHz or newer Wi-Fi standards, so it connects on the 2.4 GHz band.
- Wired: Ethernet, plus USB 2.0.
- Direct connection: Wi-Fi Direct, for connecting a phone or laptop without a router.
- Mobile and cloud printing: AirPrint and Brother iPrint&Scan are listed. Google Cloud Print is also named on Brother’s page, but Google retired that service in 2020, so do not plan around it.
- Drivers: Brother lists Windows, macOS and Linux driver compatibility. Current driver versions are on the support page, which also links to manuals and FAQs.
Toner, drum and running costs
Toner and the drum unit are separate consumables. The drum is replaced on its own schedule, so a printer can need a new drum before its toner runs out, or the reverse. Brother’s listed yields are shown below.

- FAST PRINT SPEEDS: Print up to 19 pages per minute.
- COMPACT DESIGN: Space-saving, compact design fits anywhere in your home, school or small office.
- WIRELESS CONNECTIVITY: Print from almost anywhere in your workspace using your compatible mobile device.
- PAPER CAPACITY: Up to 150 sheets.
- SUSTAINABILITY: Uses less than 2 watts in Energy Saver mode.
| Consumable | Model | Brother-listed yield |
|---|---|---|
| Starter toner (in the box) | Included with the printer | Approximately 700 pages, per ISO/IEC 19752 for letter/A4 |
| Standard-yield toner | TN-730 | Not stated on the product page reviewed |
| High-yield toner | TN-760 | Not stated on the product page reviewed |
| Drum unit | DR730 (included with the printer) | Approximately 12,000 pages, per Brother; actual life varies with use |
Brother does not state yields for the TN-730 and TN-760 on the pages reviewed, so a per-page comparison between the two cartridges is not possible from the manufacturer’s figures alone. Confirm the exact model number before buying, because consumable listings for older printers often mix models. Letter and legal laser paper and envelopes or cardstock for the manual feed are secondary accessories.

Manufacturer figures and what is not verified
The speed, volume, duty-cycle and yield figures above are manufacturer-listed values. They are not independent test results. Brother’s pages do not give a publication year for these figures, so they should be read as current manufacturer claims for this model rather than dated measurements. Print quality, noise, long-term reliability and real-world running cost have not been tested for this review, and readers should judge those points from owner experience or their own trial.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Security and support
Brother’s network specifications list TLS/SSL, IP filtering, secure print, and WPA2-PSK (AES), alongside legacy options. The current options are worth enabling. The legacy options are listed on the same page and should be disabled where your network does not need them. The presence of these features does not make the printer a current security benchmark.

Who the MFC-L2730DW suits
- A good fit: black-and-white printing for documents and forms, occasional color scanning, two-sided printing, and a network shared over Wi-Fi or Ethernet.
- A poor fit: color printing, two-sided copying or scanning, and any workflow that depends on a current warranty term or a model that is still sold new.
- Consider a current model instead if you need a new unit with a current warranty, or if you cannot confirm the toner and drum supply for this model.
The Bottom Line
On its published specifications, the Brother MFC-L2730DW is a sensible monochrome all-in-one with duplex printing, a 250-sheet tray, a 50-sheet feeder and a range of wired and wireless connections. Its limits are equally clear: no duplex scanning or copying, no color printing, and an older Wi-Fi standard. Because Brother lists it as discontinued, buy one only at a price you have checked against the cost of its toner and drum, from a seller whose condition statement and return terms you have read. Its real-world speed, reliability and running cost remain unverified here.
