The Philips 55OLED873/79 is a discontinued 55-inch 4K OLED television whose strongest documented distinction is three-sided Ambilight. Philips lists 4K input up to 60 Hz on HDMI 2 and HDMI 3, so the specifications do not establish support for HDMI 2.1 or 4K at 120 Hz. It may appeal to buyers who specifically want OLED and Ambilight, but any purchase now depends on the individual set’s condition, local availability and the services that still work in your region.
What kind of TV is the Philips 55OLED873/79?
Philips’ product sheet, issued 30 April 2023, identifies the 55OLED873/79 as a 139 cm (55-inch) 4K Ultra HD OLED TV. Its panel resolution is 3840 × 2160, and Philips lists its P5 Perfect Picture Engine and a 4100 PPI designation. Philips describes the P5 engine as delivering an image “as brilliant as the content you love”; that is manufacturer promotional language, not an independent measurement. Philips’ product specifications do not establish how a particular used set performs today.

Ambilight is the defining feature
The TV has three-sided Ambilight: lighting on the sides and top of the screen that extends the viewing experience onto the wall behind it. Philips’ tagline is “Ambilight. Take the emotion beyond the screen.” The sheet also lists Ambilight+hue support. The series manual describes finding a Philips Hue Bridge and configuring bulbs in relation to the television, but it does not establish that every Hue product or current program will work with every regional model. Check compatibility and service availability before buying extra lighting. The Philips series manual, hosted by ManualsLib, is a copy rather than a confirmation of every regional variation.
Inputs, gaming and connections
Philips lists three HDMI inputs, with different documented input limits: HDMI 2 and HDMI 3 accept video up to 4K UHD at 60 Hz, while HDMI 1 is listed up to 30 Hz. The cited specifications do not establish HDMI 2.1 or 4K/120 Hz support. If those capabilities matter for a console or gaming PC, do not assume this model provides them; check the exact input requirements for your devices.

Audio and smart-TV features
Philips specifies 30 W RMS sound output. That figure describes the listed output, not a guarantee of sound quality or a substitute for an independent listening test. TechRadar’s historical review identified weaker sound as a compromise. The set also has Philips’ app gallery, online video apps and firmware upgrades listed on the product sheet, but current app availability and software support are not established. Check that the services you use still function in your country before treating the built-in platform as a reason to buy.

For Australian models, Philips lists Freeview Plus and DVB-T/T2 reception, as well as USB recording and pause TV. These features depend on region, broadcast services and compatible equipment; the Australian listing should not be assumed to describe availability in New Zealand or elsewhere.
What independent reviewers thought
TechRadar’s review page is titled “Philips 55OLED873 OLED TV review,” although its original product name was 55POS9002. The publication says the set was renamed 55OLED873 and “the TV has otherwise remained unchanged.” Its review was last updated 14 August 2020. TechRadar praised picture quality and Ambilight, while flagging weaker sound, complicated usability, Android TV annoyances and competing images it found more dynamic. Availability and whether it is worth buying
CHOICE marks the 55OLED873/79 as a “Discontinued model.” Its public page lists A$2,695, but that is historical page information, not a current price or evidence of stock. CHOICE’s expert rating and detailed test scores are member-only, so its public listing does not support a numerical score or recommendation. See CHOICE’s listing.
There is no established current stock level, used-market value, panel condition or burn-in status for this model. If you find one, assess the particular unit rather than buying on the model name alone:

- Confirm the complete regional model suffix is 55OLED873/79 and check what is included.
- Inspect the display for image retention, burn-in, dead pixels or other visible faults, and test it while powered on.
- Check that the remote, HDMI ports, USB ports, network connections and TV reception work as expected.
- Verify the streaming apps and broadcast features you need in your location, rather than relying on the original feature list.
- Ask about the return terms and any remaining warranty before committing.
The set is most relevant to someone who values OLED and Ambilight and is comfortable with older connections and uncertain smart-platform longevity. It is a poor fit if 4K/120 Hz gaming support is a requirement, because Philips’ cited input specifications list up to 60 Hz for HDMI 2 and 3 and do not establish 120 Hz support.
