What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
The five upgrades worth considering are a friendlier interactive shell (fish), a context-aware prompt (Starship), fuzzy selection for files and command history (fzf), a modern directory listing tool (eza), and an optional terminal emulator with better text display (kitty). Each one sits in a different layer of the terminal experience, so you can adopt any of them without replacing the rest. The change that matters most is doing it one layer at a time, with a clear way back to your existing setup.
Adopt one layer at a time
A shell, a prompt, a fuzzy finder, a listing command, and a terminal emulator are separate pieces. Changing one does not require changing the others, and that independence is what makes the upgrades low-risk. Before you touch anything, follow these habits:

- Note your current login shell with
echo $SHELLand back up your dotfiles, such as~/.bashrc,~/.zshrc, or~/.config/fish/config.fish, by copying them to a dated folder. - Try each new tool from inside your existing shell first. Typing
fishat a Bash or zsh prompt starts a fish session that you can leave withexit. - Only after a tool behaves the way you want, add its configuration to your startup file. Change one file at a time.
- Check your distribution’s package version and its installation instructions before installing. Package names and versions differ between distributions and release cycles.
- Keep the previous configuration available until you have used the new setup for several days of normal work.
At a glance: the five layers
| Upgrade | Layer it changes | What it adds | Compatibility and cost to check | Font or glyph needs | Reversibility |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| fish | Interactive shell | Syntax highlighting, autosuggestions, and tab completion built in | Behaves differently from Bash and zsh; check existing scripts and dotfiles | Not stated for fish itself | Easy: you can run it from any shell and keep your login shell unchanged |
| Starship | Prompt | Context such as the current Git status, shown in the prompt | Supports Bash, fish, and zsh; some modules run commands that can time out | Nerd Font recommended for icon glyphs (optional visual polish) | Easy: remove the init line from your shell startup file |
| fzf | Selection workflow | Fuzzy selection of files and browsing of command history | Shell integration documented for Bash, zsh, and fish | Not stated | Easy: it is a separate program with its own shell integration lines |
| eza | Directory listings | A maintained replacement for ls |
Package availability depends on your distribution | Not stated | Easy: keep ls and use eza only when you call it |
| kitty | Terminal emulator | Configurable fonts, keyboard controls, sessions, and scrollback exploration | Optional; it replaces the terminal window you already use | Font choice affects comfort; a legible monospace typeface is enough | Easy: the emulator can be uninstalled without touching your shell |
1. fish: a friendlier interactive shell
The fish developers describe it in their official tutorial as “a fully-equipped command line shell (like bash or zsh) that is smart and user-friendly.” Its main appeal is that syntax highlighting, autosuggestions, and tab completions work without a plugin manager or extra configuration. That is the practical reason to try it: you gain interaction features that many shells need to be assembled by hand.
The tutorial also states that fish does some important things differently from Bash and zsh. Those differences are where most problems come from, so check them before you switch your login shell:
#1 Best Overall
- Tactile Quiet mechanical key switches with a satisfying tactile bump you feel - for precise feedback, reactive key reset, and less noise so your typing doesn't disturb those around you
- Low-profile keys, more comfort: A keyboard layout designed for effortless precision, with a full-size form factor and low-profile mechanical switches for better ergonomics
- Smart illumination: Backlit keys light up the moment your hands approach the cordless keyboard and automatically adjust to suit changing lighting conditions
- Faster workflow, more customization: Customize Fn keys, assign backlighting effects, enable Flow cross-computer, multi-device control, and more in the improved Logi Options+ (1)
- Multi-device, multi-OS: Pair MX Mechanical Bluetooth wireless keyboard with up to 3 devices on nearly any operating system via Bluetooth Low Energy or included Logi Bolt receiver(2)
- Scripts with a Bash shebang still run under Bash. Problems appear when you paste Bash syntax into an interactive fish session or source a Bash file from fish.
- Startup files are different. fish reads
~/.config/fish/config.fish, so settings in~/.bashrcdo not carry over automatically. - Aliases and functions are defined with fish’s own syntax. Move them one at a time and test each one.
To set fish as your login shell, first confirm that its full path is listed in /etc/shells, then run chsh -s followed by that path. Log out and back in for the change to take effect. Skip this step entirely if you only want to use fish when you choose to.
2. Starship: a prompt that carries useful context
Starship describes itself as “the minimal, blazing-fast, and infinitely customizable prompt for any shell!” The phrase “blazing-fast” is the project’s own wording, not an independently measured benchmark. What the prompt does offer is context: it runs commands to show things such as the current Git status, the active language runtime, or the directory’s project type, so you see them without typing a command to check.

Starship works with several shells, and the official setup examples cover Bash, fish, and zsh. Add one line to the startup file for your shell, then open a new terminal:
Recommended Free Tools
- Bash, in
~/.bashrc:eval "$(starship init bash)" - zsh, in
~/.zshrc:eval "$(starship init zsh)" - fish, in
~/.config/fish/config.fish:starship init fish | source
Starship is configured through a TOML file, usually ~/.config/starship.toml. You can start with the defaults and enable or disable individual modules later. Nerd Font glyphs are recommended by the setup guide for the icon symbols. They are a visual choice, not a functional requirement; without a Nerd Font, the prompt still works but some icons may appear as boxes or question marks.

If the prompt feels slow in a particular folder, run starship timings to see how long each module takes. Modules that run external commands are subject to a configurable time limit. When a command exceeds that limit, Starship stops it and reports it as timed out, which is the source of the Executing command ... timed out. warning that some users report. Disable or adjust the module that causes the delay rather than raising the limit by default.
3. fzf: fuzzy selection for files and history
fzf is a general-purpose fuzzy finder, not only a file picker. Its project documentation describes selecting files and browsing command history, and it provides shell integration for Bash, zsh, and fish. Once integrated, you can search the history interactively instead of pressing the up arrow repeatedly, and you can pick a file from a filtered list instead of typing its full path.

fzf also supports preview windows, which display the contents of the highlighted item as you move through the list. Use previews with file-oriented commands, such as a file viewer. A general-purpose selector can receive non-file input too, so a preview command that assumes a file path can fail or produce confusing output when the input is something else.
4. eza: better directory listings
eza is a maintained replacement for ls. It shows the same information in a more readable layout, and it is useful when you want to see permissions, sizes, or Git status in a long listing. Packages are available through several distributions, but the installation route differs from one system to another. Do not assume a single installation command works everywhere. Search your distribution’s package repository for eza, confirm the version it offers, and follow the installation instructions in the eza project documentation if your distribution does not package it.

You do not have to replace ls. Many people keep ls for scripts and call eza interactively, which avoids any change in how scripts behave.
5. kitty and text display: an optional terminal layer
A new terminal emulator is the most optional of the five changes, because it sits outside the shell and the command-line tools. Consider it only if the text display in your current terminal is the thing that bothers you. The kitty project overview states that it is “designed from the ground up to support all modern terminal features, such as Unicode, true color, bold/italic fonts, text formatting, etc.” Its documentation also covers configurable fonts, keyboard controls, sessions, and exploring scrollback.
The gains that most readers notice are simple: a legible monospace font at a comfortable size, a font that renders the glyphs your prompt uses, and searchable scrollback when a long build or log scrolls past. Those adjustments are available in many emulators. kitty is one example, not the required choice.

Troubleshooting checks
- A script fails after you switch to fish: the script is probably using Bash syntax in an interactive fish session. Run it explicitly with its shebang interpreter, or rewrite the fish-specific part.
- The prompt shows boxes or missing icons: install a Nerd Font and select it in your terminal emulator, or accept the plain symbols.
- The prompt pauses or shows a timeout warning: run
starship timings, identify the slow module, and disable or adjust it. - Starship will not install or run on an older distribution: the Starship FAQ includes a question about older versions of glibc. Check it before reinstalling.
- A preview window shows nothing useful: confirm that the preview command expects a file path, as the selected item may not be a file.
