A portfolio, a business brochure, and an online store call for different platforms, and the 2026 comparisons published so far recommend different tools for each. This guide matches the five builders most often recommended in current coverage (Wix, Squarespace, Shopify, Webflow, and Hostinger Website Builder) to the kind of site you want to launch.
This is a comparison of how these platforms are positioned in published 2026 sources and vendor material. It is not a hands-on test by the author, and no single platform wins across every category.

Which builder fits which site
- Online store first: Shopify. Its 2026 comparison centres on store listings, checkout, fulfillment, analytics, apps, and support.
- Design-led portfolio or business site: Squarespace, where templates and a managed editor are the main draw.
- Flexible drag-and-drop editing with a broad feature set: Wix.
- Maximum control over the visual result: Webflow, which publishers and Squarespace’s own comparison both describe as the customization-first option.
- Lowest starting cost: Hostinger Website Builder, which TechRadar presents as a value-oriented choice.
How the five platforms compare
The table summarises how each platform is positioned in the sources reviewed. Ratings are publisher judgments, not measured scores. Where a cited source gave no figure for a cell, the cell says so.

The platforms in more detail
Wix
Wix suits readers who want to move elements freely and who value a wide range of built-in features. SiteBuilderReport tested interface fluidity and layout customization and calls Wix’s drag-and-drop editing especially powerful. That is the publication’s editorial judgment, not an independently verified benchmark, so treat it as one informed opinion.
#1 Best Overall
- No programming skills required
- With 1 licence you can install the software on 2 computers and create as many sites as you wish
- 250 professional and customizable templates
- Import images and videos (including YouTube), editor for creating buttons
- Automatic HTML5 code generation + FTP engine for publishing your website
Squarespace
Squarespace is aimed at sites where the design should look finished with less manual work: portfolios, creative businesses, and service sites. It is a managed platform, so you trade some layout freedom for template-led consistency. Its plans, as displayed by TechRadar, start at $16 per month billed annually on the Basic tier.
Shopify
Shopify is the strongest choice when selling is the main job. The platform’s own 2026 comparison highlights checkout, fulfillment, analytics, and apps, which matter more than page design once you have products to manage. Its entry tier, Basic, is listed by TechRadar at $29 per month billed annually. Shopify is an ecommerce platform first, so a brochure site with a contact form will usually cost more than it needs to on this platform.
Webflow
Webflow is the option for readers who care most about the visual result and are willing to work at a finer level of control. Squarespace’s comparison page positions its own customization against Webflow, and publisher coverage describes Webflow’s design freedom the same way. Plan pricing is not stated in the sources reviewed, so check Webflow’s official pricing page before budgeting.
Recommended Free Tools
Hostinger Website Builder
Hostinger is included for readers who want the lowest starting cost. TechRadar presents it in that role. The sources reviewed do not give a price, and entry and renewal rates change, so confirm both on Hostinger’s official pricing page.

What to compare before you choose
1. Editing model and learning curve
Ask whether you want to place and adjust elements exactly where you like, or whether a more constrained editor would help you finish faster. Freer editors offer more control and more ways to misalign a layout on mobile. Constrained editors keep the page tidy with less effort. Build a test page with your real headline, images, and a long paragraph, and check how it looks on a phone before committing.
2. Design control
Compare template polish with freedom to customize. Squarespace is positioned around design simplicity, Webflow around customization, and Wix in between. These are publisher assessments, so judge them against your own layout sketch rather than a ranking.
Rank #4
- Create websites using over 240 templates
- Modular website builder with over 1,000 design elements
- Integrated search engine optimization (SEO) tools
- GB web storage & domain*
- Web design – no programming experience required
3. Selling online
Separate a business site that sells a few things from a store that depends on sales. A brochure site with a booking or contact form needs little commerce tooling. A store needs product management, checkout, shipping and fulfillment, and reporting. Shopify’s comparison covers those store functions most directly.
4. Total cost
The plan price is only part of the bill. Compare the following before deciding:
Best Value
- Build, Generate, Edit, and Export Reflexive Website Templates
- 1) Restaurants
- 2) E-Commerce
- 3) Blogs
- 4) Business Home Page
- Billing frequency. TechRadar’s figures are annual and monthly rates, and the monthly rate is consistently higher.
- Renewal terms and any introductory discount, which the cited sources do not establish.
- Transaction fees and paid extensions, which vary by platform and plan.
- Domain and email costs, which are usually separate from the builder subscription.
Confirm every price and plan name on the provider’s official pricing page, because third-party figures go out of date.
5. Portability and future needs
Consider what you may need in two years: more design control, store features, or a move to a different platform. The sources reviewed do not establish how easily a site moves between these builders, so check each platform’s export and domain-transfer documentation before you build a large site on it.
Quick Recap
Choosing by site type

- Small business site that may add a few products: Wix or Squarespace, depending on whether you prefer freer editing or template-led design.
- Tight starting budget: Compare Hostinger Website Builder against Wix and Squarespace basic tiers on official pricing pages.
