Rocky Linux, AlmaLinux, Oracle Linux, SUSE Linux Enterprise Server (SLES), and Ubuntu Server are five credible options for organizations evaluating a move from Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL). They are not interchangeable: Rocky and AlmaLinux aim for RHEL compatibility, Oracle Linux pairs a compatible user space with its own kernel choices, and SLES and Ubuntu belong to distinct distribution families.
Calling them distributions that are broadly “replacing” RHEL goes further than available evidence supports. There is no inspectable market-wide migration statistic establishing that claim. Treat this as a comparison of options, not a ranking or a measure of adoption.

How the five alternatives differ
| Distribution | Relationship to RHEL | Published support horizon | Best first question for a migration team |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rocky Linux | Community project designed for bug-for-bug compatibility with RHEL; not certified by Red Hat. | The Rocky Linux project states a 10-year lifecycle. Exact dates depend on the major release and its release-specific policy. | Do application and hardware vendors support the exact Rocky release and packages you need? |
| AlmaLinux | Community project targeting binary compatibility with RHEL; its current approach is ABI compatibility rather than a downstream rebuild. | AlmaLinux OS 10: active support through 31 May 2030 and security support through 31 May 2035. AlmaLinux OS 9: security support through 31 May 2032. | Does your workload support AlmaLinux and the CPU architecture in your environment? |
| Oracle Linux | Oracle maintains RHEL-compatible user space and offers its Unbreakable Enterprise Kernel (UEK) as an alternative kernel. | Oracle lists 10 years of Basic, Premier, and Premier Plus support from a major release; extended and sustaining support may also be available. | Will you use UEK or the Red Hat-compatible kernel, and does your software support that choice? |
| SUSE Linux Enterprise Server (SLES) | A separate enterprise distribution with its own tooling, ecosystem, and lifecycle. | SLES 15 SP7 general support through 31 July 2031 and Long Term Service Pack Support (LTSS) through 31 July 2034, according to SUSE’s lifecycle table. | What migration, retraining, and additional support will your environment require? |
| Ubuntu Server | A separate distribution family based on Ubuntu, not an RHEL-compatible rebuild. | Ubuntu Server LTS provides five years of standard security updates by default for packages in Ubuntu Main; Ubuntu Pro extends security maintenance and support up to 15 years, subject to release and package coverage. | Are your applications supported on the Ubuntu release and package sources you plan to use? |
These lifecycle figures describe different things—such as active support, security maintenance, or a paid support option—so they are not a like-for-like promise that every package or application remains supported for the same period.

Rocky Linux and AlmaLinux are the most direct choices when the goal is to stay close to the RHEL ecosystem. Their projects make compatibility commitments, but those commitments do not make the distributions Red Hat products or guarantee that every RHEL application, driver, or management tool will behave identically. Red Hat says derivative distributions are not certified by Red Hat and that binary compatibility is not guaranteed.

Rocky Linux
The Rocky Enterprise Software Foundation describes Rocky Linux as designed for bug-for-bug compatibility with RHEL and says the project rebuilds RHEL sources. The project states a 10-year support lifecycle and provides a migration script. Its current homepage lists Rocky Linux 10.2, 9.8, and 8.10 as released; choose the version based on your application and hardware support requirements, not simply because it is newest.
Rocky is worth evaluating where teams want a community enterprise distribution and an RHEL-like operating environment. Before migrating, confirm the support position of each application and hardware vendor, and check whether required package streams and modules are available for the target version.
AlmaLinux
AlmaLinux calls itself binary-compatible with RHEL. The project explains that it moved away from being a downstream rebuild and now targets ABI compatibility. Its published dates distinguish active support from security support: OS 10 active support ends 31 May 2030 and security support ends 31 May 2035; OS 9 security support ends 31 May 2032.
That distinction matters when planning patch coverage. Check the release notes for the specific major version and verify that the hardware architecture and application versions you rely on are supported. A compatibility goal is not a substitute for a vendor certification statement.
Oracle Linux
Oracle says it maintains full user-space compatibility with RHEL independently of the kernel running underneath. Oracle Linux therefore offers a choice that the community rebuilds do not: use Oracle’s Unbreakable Enterprise Kernel (UEK), or use the Red Hat-compatible kernel.

That kernel flexibility can matter for performance features or existing operational standards, but it also creates a certification checkpoint. Oracle cautions that certification of Oracle products on a new UEK release may not be immediate, and organizations using third-party kernel modules should confirm support with the module or application vendor. Oracle lists Basic, Premier, and Premier Plus support for 10 years from a major release; check the applicable terms and whether an extended or sustaining option is needed.
When SLES or Ubuntu makes more sense
SLES and Ubuntu Server are alternatives to RHEL, not RHEL clones. Moving to either may require changes to packaging, system administration practices, automation, and security or management tools. Their published support policies and application ecosystems should be evaluated on their own terms rather than judged by binary compatibility.

SUSE Linux Enterprise Server
SLES is SUSE’s separate enterprise operating system. SUSE’s lifecycle table lists general support for SLES 15 SP7 through 31 July 2031 and LTSS through 31 July 2034. SUSE describes a typical 13-year SLES 15 lifecycle, but the release-specific lifecycle table and support option determine the applicable dates.
Plan for the operational differences of changing distribution families: test software and hardware matrices, retrain administrators where necessary, and identify any add-on support needed for the chosen release.
Ubuntu Server
Ubuntu Server LTS is a distinct option for teams whose software vendors support Ubuntu and whose operational tooling fits its ecosystem. Canonical says an LTS release receives five years of standard security updates by default for thousands of packages in Ubuntu Main. Ubuntu Pro extends security maintenance and support up to 15 years, but coverage depends on the release and package.

Before choosing Ubuntu, map dependencies to their actual package sources. Confirm whether a required package is in Ubuntu Main, whether it receives the maintenance coverage you need, and whether Ubuntu Pro is necessary for your estate.
Do not confuse SUSE support with an operating-system migration
SUSE Multi-Linux Support is a support offer for certain existing RHEL and CentOS systems, not SLES itself and not a requirement to migrate those machines to SUSE’s operating system. SUSE describes it as a no-migration alternative for enterprise support. Its policy page lists RHEL 8, 9, and 10 as generally supported and says only the latest minor release of each major version is fully supported. Check those scope limits against the exact versions in your estate before treating it as an option.
What to validate before moving production workloads
A distribution can be technically compatible and still be a poor production choice if a critical vendor will not support it, a required kernel module fails, or the maintenance model does not fit the service’s lifetime. Use a workload-by-workload review rather than assuming that one enterprise distribution is the right replacement for every server.
- Get written application and hardware support confirmation. Ask vendors about the exact distribution, major and minor release, kernel, architecture, and deployment configuration. Do not infer certification from a distribution’s compatibility claim.
- Inventory the software stack. Record enabled repositories, package sources, modules or streams, third-party agents, kernel modules, drivers, and application dependencies. Identify packages that are unavailable or maintained differently on the target.
- Compare support ownership and cost. Decide whether community support is adequate or whether you need an operating-system vendor subscription or third-party enterprise Linux support. A free download does not itself include a production support contract.
- Match lifecycle coverage to the workload. Compare the target release’s dates and the meaning of each support phase, then check whether the packages your application uses are covered. Do not equate an operating-system lifecycle date with application certification.
- Test operational changes in a representative environment. Exercise provisioning, configuration management, image builds, patching, compliance controls, monitoring, backup, recovery, and rollback. For Oracle Linux, include the chosen kernel and any kernel-dependent software in the test.
- Run a limited migration before broad rollout. Move a low-risk but representative workload, measure whether the service and operational procedures meet requirements, and define a tested recovery path before migrating higher-impact systems.
Red Hat notes that moving from a Fedora/RHEL-based environment to Debian- or openSUSE-based systems can require changes to applications, configuration, processes, and management or security tools. Treat the scale of that work as environment-specific: an inventory and pilot will reveal more than the distribution name alone.
Why CentOS history does not prove a market-wide RHEL replacement
CentOS Linux 7 reached end of life on 30 June 2024. Red Hat distinguishes CentOS Stream, an upstream development platform, from CentOS Linux and says Stream is not a production replacement for CentOS Linux. That history helps explain why organizations evaluate other distributions, but it does not establish that these five are broadly replacing RHEL. The defensible conclusion is that they are available alternatives with different compatibility, support, and lifecycle models.
