Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Your browser’s built-in task manager can show which tabs, extensions, and browser processes are using the most memory in the current session. Treat a high number as a lead to investigate—not proof that a site is broken or leaking memory. The displayed figure is a browser metric, not necessarily the same as your computer’s total RAM use.
What the browser task manager can—and can’t—tell you
Browser task managers let you compare memory use among items running inside the browser. The highest entry might be a page, an extension, or a utility process. That ranking helps narrow down what to inspect, but there is no universal “too much memory per tab” threshold, and raw figures from different browsers are not necessarily comparable: their columns may measure different things.

A busy video site, web app, or large document may use more memory for legitimate reasons. A single reading does not show whether memory use is abnormal, and a rising figure alone does not prove a leak. If the browser’s numbers do not account for system-wide memory pressure, check your operating system’s resource monitor separately; the browser view does not necessarily include every system allocation.

Find memory-heavy entries in Microsoft Edge
- Open Edge’s Browser Task Manager with Shift+Esc, or select Settings and more > More tools > Browser Task Manager.
- Select the Memory column to sort entries and bring the larger values into view.
- Check what each high entry represents: a tab, extension, subframe, or utility process. Save your work before ending any process, and close only entries you recognize.
Edge separates native Memory from JavaScript memory, which refers to the JavaScript heap. For JavaScript memory, the live figure shown in parentheses reflects memory used by reachable objects. If that live figure keeps increasing during comparable activity, it can indicate that objects are being created or growing; it does not by itself establish a memory leak. Microsoft Edge Developer documentation describes the task manager as “a starting point to your memory issue investigation.” (Microsoft Edge Developer documentation, October 21, 2024.)

To investigate high CPU or memory use, Microsoft recommends identifying the relevant tab, extension, subframe, or utility process, ending a suspected process, and checking whether system load changes. Ending a process can interrupt its work, so save first. If an extension appears to be involved, disable extensions and re-enable them one at a time to isolate the cause. (Microsoft Support.)
Check memory use in Google Chrome
Chrome can show a tab’s memory use on its hover card. To find the control, open Chrome’s performance settings and enable the memory-use display for tab hover cards; the exact setting placement can vary by operating system and browser version. Google also provides Memory Saver with Moderate, Balanced, and Maximum levels. (Google Chrome Help.)

Memory Saver deactivates eligible inactive tabs so active pages have more resources available. A tab may reload when you return to it. Some activity can prevent a tab from being deactivated, including active audio or video, calls, screen sharing, downloads, notifications, partially completed forms, pinned tabs, and connected devices. You can also add sites to the keep-active list if you do not want them deactivated.
Investigate high memory use in Firefox
Firefox’s Task Manager shows whether tabs and extensions are using too many resources. If an extension or theme might be responsible, use Troubleshoot Mode to check whether disabling those customizations changes the behavior. For more specific memory information, Firefox provides about:memory. Mozilla advises caution with third-party software; a separate cleanup tool is not a necessary first step. Use a controlled check before blaming a tab
- Sort the entries in the browser you are using and note whether the highest one is a page, extension, or browser utility.
- Consider what the page is doing—such as playing video, running a web app, or displaying a large document—before judging its number.
- If you are checking a change over time, observe the same entry while doing comparable work. Note whether its memory figure continues to rise rather than relying on one snapshot.
- Save the page’s work before ending a process. Reopen the page and see whether the problem returns.
- If an extension is a plausible cause, isolate extensions one at a time. For inactive tabs, consider Chrome’s Memory Saver or Edge’s sleeping-tab features.
Edge’s sleeping tabs are designed to reduce resource use from inactive tabs. Edge can also freeze sleeping tabs and provide a performance detector. (Microsoft Support.)
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When a high reading needs more investigation
Look at four things together: which process is high, what kind of memory the browser is reporting, whether the value trends upward under comparable activity, and what changes after a controlled action. If one tab climbs over time, test whether closing and reopening it changes the pattern. If extension isolation points to an add-on, leave it disabled or remove it only if you no longer need it. If system memory remains under pressure but the browser task manager does not explain why, use the operating system’s resource monitor as a separate diagnostic view.
