Five emergency gadgets are worth keeping ready: a NOAA Weather Radio, working smoke and carbon monoxide alarms, a flashlight or headlamp, a first aid kit, and an emergency whistle. Each addresses a different need—receiving alerts, detecting danger, seeing during an outage, giving basic care, or signaling for help. None guarantees survival, and official guidance does not rank these items by lives saved; they are practical layers in a broader preparedness plan.
1. NOAA Weather Radio: receive local hazard alerts
A battery-powered or hand-crank radio that can receive NOAA Weather Radio tone alerts can keep warnings available when the power or internet is out. FEMA recommends a radio with alert capability and extra batteries, and CDC includes a NOAA Weather Radio in its power-outage checklist. See FEMA’s emergency supply kit checklist and the CDC’s power outage guidance.

Choose the power option you can maintain
- Battery-powered: Straightforward to use, but keep the correct spare batteries available and check them periodically.
- Hand-crank: Offers a way to generate power without spare batteries, but you must be able to crank it as directed by the manufacturer.
Before relying on a radio, check whether it receives NOAA broadcasts at your location, confirm how its alert function works, and follow its operating instructions. Reception and alert availability are not guaranteed everywhere.
2. Smoke and carbon monoxide alarms: detect threats at home
Alarms can warn household members of smoke or carbon monoxide (CO), a poisonous gas that is colorless and odorless. The U.S. Fire Administration (USFA) says more than 150 people in the United States die each year from accidental, nonfire-related CO poisoning, citing the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). Alarms are an early-warning layer, not a substitute for preventing exposure. Read USFA’s smoke alarm guidance and the CPSC’s CO alarm guidance.

Place alarms where they can warn people
- USFA recommends smoke alarms inside every bedroom, outside each sleeping area, and on every level of the home.
- CPSC recommends CO alarms on each level and outside sleeping areas.
- Interconnected smoke alarms sound together when one detects smoke, helping alerts reach people elsewhere in the home.
Test and replace them as directed
USFA recommends testing smoke alarms monthly and replacing them 10 years from the manufacture date. CPSC also recommends monthly CO-alarm tests. Check each device’s instructions and local requirements for placement, power backup, testing, and replacement; recommendations for smoke alarms do not automatically establish the same replacement schedule for CO alarms.
Use generators outdoors in well-ventilated areas, away from doors, windows, and vents, as USFA advises. An alarm does not make unsafe generator use safe.

3. Flashlight or headlamp: see during a power outage
FEMA’s basic emergency kit includes a flashlight and extra batteries; CDC’s outage checklist also names a flashlight, headlamp, or battery-powered lantern, plus extra batteries. Keep a light somewhere you can reach without searching in the dark, and decide how you will power it. A flashlight is easy to direct at a task; a headlamp leaves your hands free. Either can be useful, but no particular brightness or runtime is established by this guidance.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesCDC reports that people experience about four hours of power loss per year on average, while noting that major disaster outages can last longer and can be life-threatening for people who depend on home-use medical devices. If you rely on powered medical equipment, plan backup power with your care team and utility provider. See the CDC power outage checklist and FEMA’s basic kit checklist.

4. First aid kit: keep basic supplies together
FEMA lists a first aid kit as part of a basic emergency supply kit. Choose one whose contents suit your household’s needs, and check it periodically so supplies remain usable and relevant. A kit can support basic care, but it does not replace professional emergency medical care. Learning first aid helps you use supplies appropriately; CDC also advises learning CPR and how to use an automated external defibrillator (AED). FEMA’s emergency kit checklist covers the kit, while CDC’s practical skills guidance addresses CPR and AEDs.
5. Emergency whistle: signal for help
FEMA includes a whistle for signaling for help in an emergency supply kit. It is a compact backup signaling item; keep it somewhere accessible, rather than buried at the bottom of a bag. A whistle cannot replace emergency communications or rescue services. See FEMA’s checklist.

Build a kit around the hazards you may face
These five items cover alerts, household detection, outage lighting, basic care, and signaling. FEMA’s checklist also recommends supplies beyond gadgets, including one gallon of water per person per day for at least three days. Consider your household’s needs and local hazards when preparing; the devices are most useful as parts of a plan, not as a guarantee against harm.
