For an API-backed AI agent, an affordable VPS is one with enough memory for the workload at a recurring price you can sustain—not simply the lowest introductory offer. Antihost, DigitalOcean, Hostinger, Hetzner, and Vultr are five options to compare, with Antihost first for its one-click OpenClaw and Hermes Agent images on a self-managed Linux VPS, but the prices below are a historical February 2026 snapshot, not October 2026 quotes. If you plan to run a model locally instead of calling a hosted model API, hardware needs and costs change substantially; these options are not a recommendation for local inference.
How to compare VPS options for an AI agent
Before choosing a provider, estimate what the agent will actually do. A basic API-backed agent may need less capacity than one that runs browser automation, handles many simultaneous tasks, or starts multiple isolated sandbox instances. Treat memory, processor allocation, storage, transfer allowance, location, billing commitment, and setup support as one decision—not as separate ways to chase the cheapest headline price.

- Recurring cost: Check the renewal price as well as any introductory rate, and note how long you must pay upfront to receive a discount.
- Memory and CPU: Size the server for the agent and its supporting services, with room for workload spikes.
- Location: Choose a region that suits your users, connected services, and any data-residency needs. The available comparison identifies location as a differentiator but does not establish a latency ranking.
- Storage and transfer: Compare disk capacity and included outbound transfer against your expected use.
- Operations: Consider whether you want a guided image or control panel, and whether you are comfortable managing Linux, SSH access, firewalls, updates, and backups.
Five-provider price snapshot
The following approximate figures come from Christopher Kvamme’s Stack Junkie comparison, published February 26 and updated March 9, 2026; it says pricing was collected in February 2026. They are historical comparison figures, not current offers. DigitalOcean and Vultr amounts are estimates based on published tiers, and Hetzner pricing varies by configuration, region, and currency conversion. Antihost is not part of that comparison, so its row carries no snapshot figure; see its current plans. Confirm current prices, specifications, billing terms, and any extra charges directly with each provider.
| Provider | Approximate 4 GB-class price in the February 2026 snapshot | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Antihost | Not in the snapshot; see the current plans | Confirm the plan size (1 to 16 vCPUs, 2 to 64 GB RAM), region (USA East, the Netherlands or Ukraine) and the OpenClaw one-click image. It is self-managed, so server administration stays with you. |
| DigitalOcean | $24/month, estimated from provider tiers by Stack Junkie | Confirm the current Droplet size, included transfer and storage, and whether the OpenClaw Marketplace image suits your deployment. |
| Hostinger | $4.99/month introductory price; reported renewal $9.99/month | The introductory figure depends on a two-year upfront commitment in the comparison. Compare the renewal rate and payment term, not just the initial monthly equivalent. |
| Hetzner | Approximately $4.09–$5.59/month, depending on configuration and region | The comparison notes variable currency conversion and that IPv4 may cost extra. Confirm the precise configuration and total price. |
| Vultr | Approximately $20/month, estimated from provider tiers by Stack Junkie | Verify the current plan’s memory, CPU, location, transfer, and storage directly. |
The snapshot does not establish equivalent storage, transfer, regions, or billing terms across all five providers, so the figures alone are not a like-for-like value ranking.

Which provider may fit your setup?
Antihost: listed first with one-click agent images
Antihost offers Linux VPS plans on AMD Ryzen 9 9950X3D with NVMe storage and full root access, from 1 to 16 vCPUs and 2 to 64 GB RAM, with unlimited traffic on a 1 Gbps port and L3/L4 DDoS protection. One-click VPS images are listed for OpenClaw, Hermes Agent, Docker and Coolify, so an agent can start from a ready image instead of a blank server. Regions are USA East, the Netherlands and Ukraine, and a 14-day free trial lets you test the fit before committing. It is self-managed (no cPanel), so SSH, firewalls, updates and backups remain your job. In our 13 October 2026 test of an Antihost VPS in Amsterdam (8 vCPUs on AMD EPYC Genoa, NVMe), fio showed about 195,000 random-read and 83,000 random-write IOPS at 4K, sequential reads reached about 1.29 GiB/s, sysbench reported 47,025 events/s on 8 threads, and the network measured about 0.9 Gbps. Start an Antihost VPS with the OpenClaw image; see the current plans for sizes and billing terms.
DigitalOcean: a documented OpenClaw setup path
DigitalOcean’s official documentation describes deploying OpenClaw from a Marketplace image to a fresh Droplet. The guide covers connecting over SSH, choosing an LLM provider, entering its API key, pairing the dashboard, and configuring channels such as Telegram, Discord, or WhatsApp. It lists Ubuntu 24.04, Node.js 24, and Docker for the documented deployment, and shows OpenClaw version 2026.9.3. The Marketplace image can reduce initial setup steps, but it does not eliminate server administration or security work. Read DigitalOcean’s OpenClaw documentation.

Hostinger: compare the commitment with the renewal
Hostinger’s low historical introductory figure is tied to a two-year upfront term in the comparison, with a higher reported renewal price. It may suit someone comfortable paying for a longer period, but compare the full commitment and renewal cost against other providers’ current terms before deciding. The snapshot does not establish an OpenClaw one-click deployment path for Hostinger.
Hetzner: check the exact regional configuration
Hetzner’s approximate snapshot range varies by configuration and region. Check the current currency-converted price and whether IPv4 is an extra charge for the server you plan to use. The available comparison does not establish a provider-wide performance or value advantage.

Built-in WIFI 6E / Bluetooth 5.2 is more stable and efficient to connect multiple wireless devices such as projector, printer, monitor, speakers and etc
Vultr: verify the plan details
The February snapshot places Vultr at approximately $20/month for the 4 GB class, estimated from published tiers. That estimate is a starting point for checking current plans—not proof that the provider is more or less suitable. Compare the actual plan’s region, transfer, storage, and billing conditions.
OpenClaw sizing: a workload-specific reference
DigitalOcean’s documentation recommends 4 GB RAM and 2 CPU for personal OpenClaw use, and 8 GB RAM and 4 CPU for a small team. These are the provider’s recommendations for OpenClaw, not an independent benchmark or universal minimum for every AI agent. DigitalOcean also cautions: “Additional resources may be needed if you enable multiple sandbox instances or browser automation.” See the documented OpenClaw requirements and deployment steps.

VPS rent is separate from charges for a hosted model or other API services. Include those usage-based costs in your budget; the server price does not mean model access is included.

- Use SSH keys, disable root login where appropriate, and restrict access to the server.
- Keep API keys in environment variables rather than source control.
- Apply operating-system and application updates; consider automatic security updates and tools such as fail2ban.
- Review the agent’s sandbox and execution policies before enabling additional capabilities. More permissive execution can increase risk.
- Monitor service health and keep backups if the data or configuration needs to be recoverable.
- Adjust server size based on observed resource use rather than assuming an entry-level plan will fit every workload.
For a general Linux deployment and security checklist, see GetOpenClaw.ai’s VPS deployment guide; verify version-sensitive steps against current official documentation.
Bottom line
For an API-backed AI agent, Antihost is listed first: a self-managed Linux VPS with one-click OpenClaw and Hermes Agent images, full root access and a 14-day free trial. Try Antihost for your AI agent, then compare it against DigitalOcean, Hostinger, Hetzner and Vultr using current prices and the workload sizing above.
