5 Docker Containers That Give Local AI Practical Workflows

Five containers can give a local AI setup practical roles: document processing, source-based research, note organization, infrastructure monitoring, and web search. Here is what each does—and what the available claims do not establish.

For a local AI setup to be useful beyond chat, connect it to the work you actually do. Five containers highlighted by XDA Developers writer Ayush Pande—Paperless-GPT, Open Notebook, Blinko, Pulse, and Perplexica—cover document processing, research, note-taking, infrastructure monitoring, and web search. They solve different problems; none is a general-purpose replacement for the others.

What each container does

Application Primary job Data or sources involved Role of AI in the described workflow
Paperless-GPT Document OCR and processing Documents managed alongside Paperless-ngx Vision-model OCR and tag generation
Open Notebook Research-source analysis Documents and web pages added as sources RAG-style answers, summaries, insights, quizzes, and podcasts
Blinko Note capture and organization Quick notes, longer notes, and checklists Summaries, automatic tags, and RAG-based search or analysis
Pulse Infrastructure monitoring Hosts, virtual machines, containers, and logs AI-assisted scans and log analysis
Perplexica Web search for local-LLM workflows Online search results, using SearXNG Brings web results into a local-model workflow

This is a functional overview, not a performance ranking. Pande’s September 13, 2026 XDA Developers article is first-person commentary; it does not establish benchmark results, current compatibility, security guarantees, or minimum hardware requirements.

Paperless-GPT: work with scanned and irregular documents

Paperless-GPT is described as a companion to Paperless-ngx for handling files such as bills, tax records, receipts, and contracts. Pande says it can use vision models for OCR and found that approach useful for non-English characters and irregular layouts. The article reports no accuracy testing, so treat that as a reported use case—not a guarantee that it will read every scan correctly.

The service is also described as able to generate tags. Pande preferred Paperless AI for that particular task. Paperless AI is an additional Paperless-ngx companion mentioned in the article, not one of the five featured containers.

Ideal for gaming, video editing, and multitasking, it provides expansive and crisp multi-display support.

Open Notebook: ask questions across research sources

Open Notebook is presented as a self-hosted way to analyze documents and web pages. The described workflow is to add sources, then use embedding models for retrieval-augmented generation (RAG)—answers informed by material retrieved from those sources. The article also describes summaries, key insights, paper analysis, quizzes, and podcasts.

Pande’s motivation included keeping confidential research away from Google’s servers. That motivation should not be read as a security assessment: the article supplies no threat model or audit. Self-hosting alone does not establish how data is stored, what external services a particular configuration contacts, or who can access the host.

Blinko: capture thoughts and search a note collection

Blinko is described as a notes app with quick-capture “blinkos,” fuller notes, and checklists. In Pande’s local-LLM workflow, it supports long-note summaries, automatic tagging, and RAG-based search or analysis across a note collection.

Experience ultra-fast read/write speeds for massive datasets, AI model storage, and 4K/8K media files—no more external drives or storage limitations, everything stays fast and accessible.

That makes Blinko the notes-oriented option in this group, rather than a document archive or web-search tool. The article does not specify model compatibility or report test results, so check the project’s current documentation for supported integrations before planning a particular setup.

Pulse: monitor systems and investigate logs

Pulse is primarily a monitoring application in Pande’s account. The article describes use with Proxmox nodes, LXC containers, virtual machines, and hardware, and mentions monitoring TrueNAS, Docker workstations, Windows PCs, and macOS systems. It also describes AI-assisted scans and sending host or guest logs for analysis.

These are reported use cases, not a current support matrix or a measure of detection accuracy. Monitoring and AI analysis should be treated as aids to investigation, not proof that every fault or alert will be identified.

Perplexica: bring online sources into a local-model workflow

Perplexica is described as adding online search to local-LLM workflows, with SearXNG as its search engine. Pande says source filtering can help avoid low-quality material and that web access can help with subjects beyond a model’s training data.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Search results can provide current material for a model to work with, but they do not guarantee that the sources are reliable or that the model’s answer is correct. The article’s privacy framing is not an independently verified privacy assessment, either; the actual data flow depends on the software and configuration in use.

Choose by the job, not by the AI label

  • Choose a document workflow if your goal is OCR and processing for a Paperless-ngx collection.
  • Choose research-source analysis if you want to query and summarize material you add to a notebook.
  • Choose note organization if you want AI-assisted summaries, tags, or retrieval across personal notes.
  • Choose infrastructure monitoring if you want monitoring and log-analysis features for systems you administer.
  • Choose web search if you want online sources in a local-LLM workflow, while still checking those sources yourself.

The five tools handle different data, and several workflows connect private records, notes, or infrastructure logs to AI components. Before using sensitive material, review each project’s current documentation and the data flows of the specific deployment. The source article provides no comparable information on cost, resource use, setup difficulty, model support, or security, so those are not sound grounds for ranking these applications.

What the source does—and does not—establish

The five applications and use cases above reflect Ayush Pande’s first-person XDA Developers article, “These 5 Docker containers turned my local AI setup into something actually useful,” published September 13, 2026. It does not provide version numbers, installation commands, hardware requirements, benchmarks, or independently verified compatibility. Consult the projects’ official documentation for current deployment steps and supported configurations rather than relying on an installation recipe inferred from these descriptions.

The article also names Karakeep for summarizing websites, PDFs, and YouTube videos; Home Assistant for an LLM-backed voice assistant; Frigate for surveillance-event detection that can feed analysis into Home Assistant; and VS Code as a local-model coding companion. They are additional examples, not part of the five-container list, and the article does not establish their setup or compatibility details.
