5 Docker Containers Compared: Which One Fits Your Needs?

Yes—five focused Docker services can replace most “upload a file and hope for the best” utility sites. SnapOtter handles broad file processing, Stirling-PDF is a PDF workbench, Paperless-ngx turns scans into a searchable archive, Vaultwarden stores credentials, and Jellyfin serves media from your own hardware. Your files stay on infrastructure you control, but you also take responsibility for HTTPS, authentication, backups, updates, and exposure to the internet.

What these containers replace—and what they do not

Online converters, OCR pages, image compressors, password websites, and ad-supported media portals are convenient because someone else runs the servers. That convenience usually means uploading sensitive files or credentials to a service whose retention, logging, and security practices you cannot fully inspect. A self-hosted container moves the trust boundary to your own server, NAS, or rented virtual machine.

Docker packages each application and its dependencies so it can run consistently without installing every library directly on the host operating system. It does not make an application automatically secure. You still need a supported Docker host, controlled network access, a recovery plan, and a process for applying updates. The five choices below are not interchangeable: two are workbenches, one is an archive, one is a credential system, and one is a media server.

The five-container shortlist

1. SnapOtter: one broad replacement for scattered utility sites

SnapOtter describes itself as “Open-source, self-hosted file-processing infrastructure.” Its scope is unusually broad: conversion, compression, OCR, transcription, metadata stripping, and local AI across images, video, audio, PDFs, and office documents. That makes it the closest match for someone trying to replace several unrelated websites with one deployment.

  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

The project documents a one-container quick start and a small Compose stack for production. The quick start is useful for evaluating the interface on a private network; the Compose approach is more appropriate when you need persistent storage, controlled restarts, and separate configuration. Before deploying, check the current repository documentation for supported formats, optional AI models, environment variables, and image tags because those details can change.

  • Best for: mixed, one-off file jobs such as OCR, compression, format conversion, transcription, and metadata cleanup.
  • Files under your control: yes, when the container and its storage volumes run on your infrastructure.
  • Operational profile: moderate administration; CPU and storage demand rise sharply for video, OCR, transcription, and local-AI workloads.
  • Access: primarily a browser workflow; dedicated mobile-client support is not established in the cited project description.

SnapOtter is a workbench, not a records-management system. If you need years of scans organized by correspondent, tags, and full-text search, use an archive such as Paperless-ngx instead of treating a processing queue as your document library.

2. Stirling-PDF: a private PDF workbench

Stirling-PDF is designed for routine PDF work: merging and splitting, format conversion, OCR, compression, metadata changes, and related operations. Its official Docker guide lists a latest image that bundles LibreOffice, Tesseract, OCRmyPDF, WeasyPrint, Calibre, Ghostscript, QPDF, and ImageMagick. Builds are listed for both amd64 and arm64, which covers common Intel/AMD servers and many ARM boards.

Those bundled tools explain why image selection matters. A smaller image may consume less memory but omit capabilities that depend on office conversion, OCR, or image processing. Read the current installation table before choosing an image, and confirm that your host architecture is supported. The latest tag is convenient for a trial but can change underneath you; production users should review release notes and decide whether to pin a version.

  • Best for: private, repeatable PDF operations without sending documents to a web converter.
  • Resources: light text-only jobs are modest; OCR, rendering, office conversion, and large image-heavy PDFs require more CPU and memory. No single hardware requirement is established because workload size varies.
  • Access: browser interface; protect it with authentication and HTTPS before exposing it beyond your LAN.
  • Backups: preserve the application configuration and any mounted input/output directories if you need reproducible settings or queued work after a restore.

3. Paperless-ngx: an archive for scans and household records

Paperless-ngx belongs on this list for a different reason. It is an archive and retrieval system for scanned bills, receipts, forms, tax records, and other documents that you want to keep and find later. OCR, tags, correspondents, and search turn a folder of image files into an indexed collection.

Do not evaluate it like a one-click converter. The important questions are ingestion, naming and tagging rules, OCR language support, retention, and restore procedures. Verify the current Paperless-ngx container image, OCR dependencies, database requirements, and official backup guidance immediately before deployment; those project-specific details are version-sensitive.

Docker’s self-hosting guidance uses document-management platforms such as Seafile and Nextcloud to illustrate the broader benefit of controlled infrastructure: documents can remain on equipment you administer instead of being uploaded to an unknown service. Paperless-ngx follows that model, but the privacy benefit depends on securing the host and every account that can access it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Best for: a growing, searchable document collection rather than temporary conversions.
  • Resources: storage grows with scans and OCR derivatives; CPU demand is concentrated during ingestion and OCR.
  • Access: browser-based administration and retrieval; confirm current mobile-client options in the project documentation.
  • Backups: back up the database, media/documents volume, and configuration together. A copy of only the original files will not preserve tags, search indexes, or other metadata.

4. Vaultwarden: private credential storage

Docker describes Vaultwarden as “a lightweight, self-hosted password manager that syncs across devices and works with the Bitwarden browser extensions and apps.” That compatibility makes it a practical alternative to placing credentials in an unfamiliar hosted service while retaining familiar browser and mobile workflows.

Password storage has a higher consequence of failure than a failed conversion. Put Vaultwarden behind HTTPS, enforce strong account authentication, and restrict administrative access. Keep encrypted, tested backups in more than one location. A backup that has never been restored is only a hope, and an exposed password-manager endpoint deserves faster patching and monitoring than a disposable utility container.

  • Best for: credentials, secure notes, and synchronized vault access across devices you control.
  • Resources: generally light compared with media transcoding or OCR; storage requirements are driven by vault attachments and backup retention.
  • Access: browser extensions and mobile/desktop apps that use the compatible Bitwarden protocol.
  • Network requirement: reliable HTTPS is essential for synchronization and for preventing credentials from traversing an unencrypted connection.

5. Jellyfin: a personal media library

Jellyfin is a self-hosted, Netflix-style library for movies, television, and music stored on your own infrastructure. Docker’s guide highlights the absence of ads, data tracking, and sudden content removals. Instead of visiting an ad-supported portal, you stream a library you maintain to devices you authorize.

The trade-off is that you supply the media, storage, and computing capacity. Direct playback may be inexpensive, while transcoding a high-resolution file for a phone, browser, or slower connection can consume substantial CPU or a compatible hardware encoder. Keep the server on a private network when possible; if remote access is necessary, use a reverse proxy or VPN, HTTPS, strong accounts, and timely updates.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Best for: organizing and streaming lawfully acquired movies, television, and music.
  • Resources: storage is determined by your library; CPU/GPU demand depends on simultaneous streams and whether transcoding is required.
  • Access: clients for common phones, televisions, browsers, and streaming devices are part of Jellyfin’s ecosystem; check current client support for your exact device.
  • Responsibility: you remain responsible for lawful media ownership, metadata accuracy, backups, and remote-access security.

How the five compare

Container Primary role Typical workload Client/access model Administration burden Key backup target
SnapOtter General file-processing workbench Conversions, compression, OCR, transcription, metadata and local AI Browser interface; mobile support not established in the cited description Moderate; high for AI or media workloads Configuration, mounted working data, and any model or job storage
Stirling-PDF PDF workbench Merge, split, convert, OCR, compress, edit metadata Browser interface Low to moderate; image choice affects features and memory Configuration and persistent input/output locations
Paperless-ngx Document archive Ingestion, OCR, tags, correspondents, full-text retrieval Browser interface; verify current mobile options Moderate to high because database and media must stay consistent Database, documents/media volume, and configuration
Vaultwarden Password manager Encrypted vault synchronization and secure notes Bitwarden-compatible browser extensions and apps High security sensitivity despite generally light resource use Encrypted vault backup plus configuration, tested through restoration
Jellyfin Personal media server Library indexing, direct play, and optional transcoding Browser and device clients; verify support for each target device Moderate; increases with remote access and transcoding Library files, database, artwork/metadata, and configuration

Exact CPU, RAM, and storage requirements are workload-dependent and are not fixed by the container label. A small PDF conversion and a multi-user 4K media server are fundamentally different loads. Start with the project’s current requirements, measure your own jobs, and leave headroom for updates and backups.

A safe deployment pattern

  1. Choose the trust boundary. Decide whether the service is LAN-only, reachable through a VPN, or intentionally published through a reverse proxy. Do not expose an administrative interface directly to the public internet by default.
  2. Install a maintained Docker host. Use a supported operating system, automatic security updates where appropriate, a firewall, and enough storage for application data plus at least one backup copy.
  3. Read the current project installation page. Confirm image architecture, required volumes, environment variables, database dependencies, and supported tags. This is especially important for Stirling-PDF’s image variants and for Paperless-ngx’s OCR/database components.
  4. Create persistent storage deliberately. Bind-mount or provision named volumes for documents, vault data, media libraries, databases, and configuration. Keep temporary working directories separate from irreplaceable records.
  5. Start the Compose project. After reviewing the vendor-provided Compose file, run it with Docker Compose and inspect container logs. Confirm that the service can write to its volumes and that restarts do not erase data.
  6. Add HTTPS and authentication. Put internet-facing services behind a maintained reverse proxy or VPN, use valid certificates, disable unused public routes, and require unique strong credentials. Vaultwarden should receive the strictest access controls.
  7. Test the real workflow. Convert a sample PDF, OCR a representative scan, sign in from a second Vaultwarden client, or stream a file that requires the type of playback you expect. Test failure cases such as a full disk and a stopped database.
  8. Back up and restore before trusting the service. Schedule encrypted backups, keep a copy off the host, and perform a restoration drill. For Paperless-ngx and Jellyfin, include databases and metadata—not just original documents or media.
  9. Monitor updates and exposure. Review release notes, image changes, authentication logs, disk usage, and certificate expiry. Pin versions when you need predictable rollouts, then upgrade on a schedule rather than leaving images untouched indefinitely.

Which container should you choose?

Choose SnapOtter when variety matters most

Pick SnapOtter if you routinely switch between image, audio, video, PDF, and document tasks and want one browser workbench. It reduces the number of separate services to maintain, but its broad feature set can require more CPU, storage, and careful review of optional components.

Choose Stirling-PDF for focused PDF work

Use Stirling-PDF when PDFs are the recurring problem and you want a purpose-built interface with OCR and conversion tools. Verify the image variant before deployment and avoid assuming that every tag has identical resource use or bundled features.

Choose Paperless-ngx for retention and retrieval

Choose Paperless-ngx when the goal is to find a receipt or form months later, not merely process it once. Plan taxonomy, ingestion, database backups, and OCR languages before importing your archive.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose Vaultwarden only if you will operate it like critical infrastructure

Vaultwarden can keep credentials under your control and sync with familiar clients, but convenience does not lower the security bar. If you cannot maintain HTTPS, backups, access controls, and prompt updates, a self-hosted password manager is the wrong first container.

Choose Jellyfin for owned media and controlled streaming

Jellyfin is the fit for a personal library and multi-device playback. Estimate storage and transcoding needs from your actual files and viewers, and keep remote access closed until the local setup and account security are proven.

Common failure modes

  • “It is local, so it is private.” A public port, weak password, outdated image, or compromised host defeats that assumption. Use network restrictions, HTTPS, and updates.
  • “The container is the backup.” Containers are replaceable; volumes and databases contain the valuable state. Back up those locations and test restoration.
  • “Latest never changes.” Mutable tags can introduce behavior or dependency changes. Review release notes and pin a tested version when stability matters.
  • “Any server will handle it.” OCR, local AI, high-resolution transcoding, and large conversions can saturate CPU, memory, or disk. Measure representative jobs before adding more users.
  • “One tool replaces every other tool.” SnapOtter and Stirling-PDF process files; Paperless-ngx archives them; Vaultwarden protects credentials; Jellyfin serves media. Selecting by role prevents data and security mistakes.

Bottom line

For the broadest replacement of random converter and compressor sites, start with SnapOtter. Add Stirling-PDF when PDF-specific controls matter, Paperless-ngx when documents must remain searchable, Vaultwarden for credentials only with disciplined security operations, and Jellyfin for a lawful personal media library. The privacy advantage comes from controlling storage and access; it lasts only as long as you maintain the host, protect the network, update the images, and can restore from backup.
