1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIf you want the closest match to Lanterns‘s blend of murder investigation and genre storytelling, start with True Detective for a dark, layered mystery and Mare of Easttown for a grounded local murder case. Fargo is the best pick if you want the same kind of crime story with a stranger, darkly comic edge. The Night Of and Sharp Objects are looser, editorial extensions for viewers who want investigation and character drama in a more adjacent mood.
What Lanterns offers, and what to match
Warner Bros. Discovery’s official press release describes the series as following new recruit John Stewart and Lantern legend Hal Jordan, “two intergalactic cops drawn into a dark, earth-based mystery as they investigate a murder in the American heartland.” (Warner Bros. Discovery Pressroom, March 4, 2026.) DC’s official article identifies the show as based on Green Lantern and gives an August 16, 2026 premiere on HBO Max (DC, July 29, 2026).

That premise combines four features. Each recommendation below leans on one or more of them, so it helps to decide which one you care about most:
- Structure: a serialized murder investigation that unfolds across a season, versus episodic casework where each story wraps up.
- Setting: a grounded small-town or regional community, versus a heightened world with genre elements.
- Tone: grim and slow-burn, versus darkly comic and eccentric.
- Main draw: the detective relationship and character drama, versus the mystery itself.
The five picks
1. True Detective: for a dark, high-stakes mystery
Start here if the investigation itself is what hooks you. HBO’s official listing for season three describes a macabre crime in the Ozarks and a mystery that develops over decades and across three timelines (HBO Max LA Press Room). The show is an anthology, so each season has its own story and its own cast. Pick one season rather than treating the franchise as a single continuous case.
#1 Best Overall
2. Mare of Easttown: for a grounded local murder case
This is the closest match for Lanterns’ small-community dimension. HBO’s genre catalogue describes Kate Winslet’s character investigating a local murder while her personal life falls apart (HBO, Best Crime TV Shows). The appeal is in the texture of a close-knit place where everyone knows everyone, and where the investigation is as much about the detective’s own strain as the case.
3. Fargo: for a crime story with an eccentric, darkly comic edge
Choose Fargo if you want the investigation but with more oddity in the tone. Le Monde’s review of Lanterns compares the new series with Fargo and True Detective (Le Monde, August 21, 2026). That comparison is the reviewer’s critical framing, not a statement from Lanterns’ creators or HBO, and it is a useful signpost for viewers who want a crime plot that does not play everything straight.

4. The Night Of: an adjacent pick for investigation and consequences
This is an editorial extension, not a documented Lanterns influence. It suits viewers who want the investigation to drive the drama and the consequences of a case to matter as much as the solution. The sources behind this list do not include a plot summary for it, so this entry makes no claims about its story.

Also an editorial extension rather than a confirmed influence. Choose it if the crime is the frame and the emotional weight of the protagonist is the main reason to keep watching. As with The Night Of, this recommendation rests on mood and genre rather than on a documented link to Lanterns.

Where to watch
Lanterns and the recommended series are offered through HBO Max, but availability varies by country and changes over time. Check HBO Max in your region before you start, and confirm that each season you plan to watch is included in your plan.
If you are curious about the source material, Green Lantern comics are the natural next step. The main recommendations above are the viewing picks; the comics are a secondary read for readers who want to know where the characters come from.

Choosing where to start
- If you want the mystery to take the lead, start with True Detective, season three.
- If you want a grounded local case with a stressed detective, start with Mare of Easttown.
- If you want the same crime structure but a stranger tone, start with Fargo.
- If you are mostly drawn to the characters rather than the mystery, try Sharp Objects or The Night Of as adjacent options.
Similarity depends on which feature you care about. These five shows cover different investigation structures, settings and tones, so they are best read as neighbours to Lanterns, not as five copies of it.
