No single machine is the fastest for every T-shirt job. The best choice depends on the garment material, how detailed the artwork is, how many shirts repeat the same design, and whether every stage after printing can keep pace. A printer’s advertised rate describes one step in the line. The number that decides what you can ship is finished, accepted shirts per hour.
Why advertised speeds are not directly comparable
Manufacturers publish speed figures in different units, for different steps, under different conditions. Set them side by side and you are comparing unlike things.

| Vendor and product context | Published claim | What it measures | Limitation to keep in mind |
|---|---|---|---|
| Brother, high-volume DTG/DTF product material (checked 2026) | Up to 42 dark garments or 57 light garments per hour | Finished garments per hour | A manufacturer claim. The material does not state an independent test protocol, and the figures are not tied to a specific print size or operator setup. |
| Ricoh DTG, Ri 2000 product page (checked 2026) | Less than 10 seconds to print light garments | Print time only | Excludes pretreatment, curing, pressing, loading, and handling. It is not a complete garment cycle. |
| Kornit Digital, Apollo product page (checked 2026) | Up to 400 impressions per hour | Impressions | An impression is not necessarily one finished shirt, so it should not be compared directly with garments-per-hour figures. |
| Mimaki Europe, DTF workflow guide (checked 2026) | No single rate given | Not applicable | Mimaki states that printer speed alone does not determine DTF production capacity. |
No independent, side-by-side speed test of these machines is publicly available in the sources cited here. Treat every figure above as a manufacturer claim, not a benchmark. Before you rely on any number, ask the vendor which garment, print size, color mode, operator count, and finishing equipment the rate assumes. Then compare finished, accepted shirts per hour for your own job.
The five production methods, compared
Each method has a different job it does well. The table shows the best fit and the main constraint. The sections below add the workflow detail that the table leaves out.

| Method | Best fit | Main constraint |
|---|---|---|
| DTG (direct-to-garment) | Detailed full-color art on cotton; short runs and on-demand work | Garment must be pretreated and cured; dark garments need extra steps |
| DTF (direct-to-film) | Cotton, polyester, and blends in varied jobs | Output depends on the full print, powder, cure, and press chain |
| Screen printing | Large quantities of one design | Screen preparation and setup; multi-color jobs add setup demands |
| Sublimation | Suitable polyester garments | Dye bonds only with suitable polyester fabric; not a general method for cotton T-shirts |
| Heat-transfer vinyl (HTV) | Names, numbers, and simple logos | Cut film or print-and-cut film, then heat press; less suited to detailed artwork |
Mimaki advises that method choice depends on fabric, artwork, order size, and the finish you need. These are vendor recommendations, so follow the current process instructions from your ink, film, and equipment suppliers.
DTG
DTG deposits ink directly onto a pretreated garment. It handles fine detail and gradients well on cotton. Dark garments usually need a white underbase printed beneath the color layer, which adds a step and time to each shirt.

DTF
DTF prints the design onto a film, applies adhesive powder, cures the powder, and transfers the image to the garment with a heat press. Because the film is a separate product, the method works across cotton, polyester, and blends. The trade-off is that every stage adds time and consumables.
Screen printing
Screen printing takes the most setup, since each color needs its own screen. Once the setup is done, the cost of that setup is spread across every shirt in the run. It makes sense when the same design repeats across a large order and becomes harder to justify for one-off jobs.

Sublimation
Sublimation bonds dye with polyester fibers. Garment material is a hard constraint. A polyester shirt may work well, but a cotton shirt will not take a sublimated image in the same way.
Heat-transfer vinyl
HTV uses a cutter for cut film, or a print-and-cut system for printable film, followed by a heat press. It suits names, numbers, and logos. It is the least practical choice for photographic or multi-tone artwork.

How the steps around the printer set your real output
The printer is rarely the constraint on a DTG or DTF line. Pretreatment, curing, and pressing decide how many shirts leave the shop each hour.
Recommended Free Tools
DTG workflow
- Design and pretreat. Ricoh describes pretreatment as something that may be applied manually, with a dedicated machine, or with an integrated system on some products.
- Print. The garment is printed, and the printing step is usually the shortest part of the cycle.
- Cure. The garment is heat-pressed to cure the ink. Ricoh gives a 60 to 90 second curing interval in its process description. That is a workflow statement for its own system, not a universal setting, so confirm the figure with your ink and garment supplier.
Ricoh’s own wording on curing is: “In 60 to 90 seconds, heat press machines will cure the ink into the shirt.” Source: Ricoh DTG direct-to-garment printing, checked 2026.

DTF workflow
- Print the film. The design is printed onto a transfer film.
- Apply adhesive powder. Powder is applied to the printed film.
- Cure the powder. The powder is cured before transfer.
- Heat-press the transfer. The film is pressed onto the garment.
Mimaki’s guidance is direct: “Printer speed alone does not determine DTF production capacity.” It also warns that “If one stage is slower, it can become a bottleneck as order volumes grow.” Source: Mimaki Europe T-shirt printing methods and production guide, checked 2026. In practice, plan powdering, curing, and press capacity around your expected volume, and test the full film, powder, garment, and press combination before you commit to production.
Space, power, and environment
Plan the whole installation, not only the printer’s footprint. Brother’s FAQ for its GTXpro setup says the package includes a heat press and automatic pretreatment equipment. It lists the printer’s dimensions as 55 × 51 × 21 inches and estimates that an average complete setup can run in a 12 × 12 foot room. The same FAQ says the printer should be kept in a clean, climate-controlled room and gives temperature and humidity ranges. Confirm those figures for your exact model and ancillary equipment before you plan a layout.
Also allow room for:
- A work surface for loading, garment handling, and inspection.
- A curing or heat-press station sized to the volume you expect.
- Storage for ink, film, adhesive powder, and other consumables, kept within the conditions the suppliers specify.
Matching a machine to your job
These are workflow inferences drawn from the trade-offs each method’s manufacturers describe. They are not guarantees about your costs or output.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- One-off personalization or frequent small orders: DTG or DTF keeps setup low and lets you change the design between shirts without rebuilding screens.
- Repeated large batches of one design: Screen printing amortizes setup across the run. A high-volume DTG or DTF line can also work, but only if pretreatment, curing, and pressing are sized to match the printer.
- Mixed fabrics: DTF’s material range is its main advantage, provided the powder and press stages keep pace.
- Names, numbers, and simple logos: HTV with a cutter or print-and-cut system is often the most economical route.
- Polyester-only work with full-color designs: Sublimation is an option if the garments are suitable, and it is ruled out for cotton.
What to verify before you buy
- A full-workflow rate. Ask for finished, accepted shirts per hour, including loading, pretreatment, transfer handling, curing, pressing, and rejects.
- Your own garments and settings. Test the actual garment, film, powder, ink, and press settings together. Durability and hand feel depend on the materials, the cure, and how the shirt is cared for.
- Heat press compatibility. A T-shirt heat press is part of the DTG curing and DTF transfer workflow, so check its capacity and platen size against your garments and designs. A heat press does not print designs on its own.
- Consumables and service. Get current quotes for ink, film, powder, maintenance, service, and training. The sources do not establish a standardized independent cost-per-shirt comparison, so build your own from those quotes.
- Current availability. Confirm that the model is still sold in your region, and that service is available nearby. Specifications and speed figures are vendor claims and can change.
The fastest machine on a brochure is not automatically the most productive one in your shop. The machine that fits your fabric, artwork, and order size, and that has matching capacity at every stage, is the one that will produce the most accepted shirts.
