5 Chromebook Features Worth Enabling (and How to Turn Them On)

By Freedom251 Team · · 9 min read

The most useful Chromebook upgrades are already built into ChromeOS: a Debian Linux container for development, Android-phone integration through Phone Hub, cross-device sharing with Quick Share, separate workspaces with Virtual Desks, and Screen Capture for images and video. Enable the features that match your work rather than installing a collection of extensions, and check the administrator restrictions and device versions described below before troubleshooting.

Which Chromebook features should you enable?

This quick comparison shows what each feature is for and what it needs. The detailed setup and limitations follow.

Feature Primary purpose Where to start Requirements and permissions Offline behavior Important limits
Linux development environment Run a Debian-based terminal, packages and development tools Settings > About ChromeOS > Developers > Linux development environment > Set up Supported Chromebook; an administrator can disable it Installed Linux tools can run without internet; downloading packages and updates needs a connection Google’s cited help page lists cameras, Android emulators, GPU acceleration and video decode as unsupported
Phone Hub Use selected Android-phone information and controls from the Chromebook Settings > Connected devices, or the Phone icon beside the clock Chromebook on M89 or later, Android 5.1 or later, pairing and feature permissions; streaming cases may require a lock screen Several listed controls can work offline after pairing Some DRM-protected entertainment apps may not stream
Quick Share Send text, images, files and web pages nearby Quick Settings ChromeOS 91 or later, Android 6.0 or later; visibility choice and nearby-device permissions; managed devices may restrict it Local transfers do not require internet access, but both devices must be nearby and discoverable It is off by default; “available to everyone” visibility lasts up to 10 minutes
Virtual Desks Keep work, communication and personal windows in separate workspaces Open the Overview view and create additional desks ChromeOS with the Virtual Desks interface; no second device is required Desk organization is local to the Chromebook Exact controls and keyboard shortcuts can vary by ChromeOS release
Screen Capture Take screenshots or record the whole screen, an area or a window Open Screen Capture from Quick Settings Built into ChromeOS; choose audio, microphone, camera and indicator options before recording Captures are created locally Screenshots and recordings save to Downloads unless you choose another folder

1. Turn on the Linux development environment

Google describes Linux as “a feature that lets you develop software using your Chromebook.” Enabling it adds a Debian environment alongside ChromeOS rather than replacing the operating system. You can open a terminal, install packages with APT, and use Linux code editors or integrated development environments (IDEs). It is the strongest built-in option for programming, scripting, command-line utilities and local web development.

Setup

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select About ChromeOS.
  3. Open Developers.
  4. Choose Linux development environment, then select Set up.
  5. Complete the account, storage and username prompts shown by ChromeOS. When setup finishes, launch Terminal from the app launcher.

The first setup downloads the container, so allow time and free storage for the environment and its packages. Once Terminal is available, normal Debian package commands such as sudo apt update and sudo apt install can be used. Keep the container updated through its package manager and remove packages you no longer need to avoid filling a small Chromebook drive.

  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

What the sandbox changes

Linux applications share a sandbox. That separation is useful: a misbehaving Linux program is less able to affect the rest of ChromeOS, and you can turn the environment off or reset it from its settings. It also means Linux software does not automatically have unrestricted access to Chromebook hardware or files. ChromeOS asks when an app needs access to shared folders, and you should grant only the folders you actually need.

Hardware and administrator limits

Google’s cited Chromebook Help guidance identifies cameras, Android emulators, GPU acceleration and video decode as unsupported in this Linux environment. That makes it a poor fit for workloads that depend on those capabilities, even when the same tools run well on a conventional Linux PC. A work- or school-managed Chromebook may hide or disable the Linux setting entirely; only the administrator can change that policy. Linux is therefore ideal for terminal-based development, but not a guarantee that every desktop Linux application or hardware feature will work.

2. Connect an Android phone with Phone Hub

Phone Hub puts selected phone information and actions on the Chromebook screen. Google’s description is: “You can use features on your phone from your Chromebook screen with Phone Hub.” After pairing, you can see phone signal and battery status, turn the phone’s hotspot on or off, locate the phone, browse open Chrome tabs, sync notifications, view recent photos and screenshots, and in supported cases stream phone apps.

Pair the devices

  1. On the Chromebook, open Settings > Connected devices. You can also select the Phone icon near the clock to reach the same setup.
  2. Choose the option to set up or connect an Android phone, then select the phone identified by ChromeOS.
  3. Confirm the pairing code and sign in or approve the requested permissions on both devices.
  4. Return to Connected devices to choose which Phone Hub functions are enabled.

The cited requirements are a Chromebook running ChromeOS M89 or later and an Android phone running Android 5.1 or later. A newer phone or Chromebook may expose more controls than an older one. Notification, photo and tab features depend on the permissions you grant; if you deny one, that particular data will not appear on the Chromebook.

Streaming and privacy details

Phone-app streaming is more demanding than showing a battery level or a Chrome tab. Some streaming scenarios require the phone to have a lock screen, and the phone must support the feature. Digital-rights-managed entertainment apps may refuse to stream even when other apps work. Treat the Chromebook as another screen for selected phone data: review notification access and photo permissions, and disconnect the phone from Connected devices when using a shared Chromebook.

Several Phone Hub controls can continue to work without an internet connection once the devices are paired, but cloud-dependent services and any action that needs the phone’s network will still require connectivity. Phone Hub is best when you want continuity between your own devices, not when you need a universal remote for every Android app.

3. Enable Quick Share for nearby transfers

Quick Share is the current name for Android’s former Nearby Share feature. It sends text, images, files and web pages between nearby Android devices, Chromebooks and Windows PCs, avoiding cables, email attachments and temporary cloud uploads. It is disabled by default, so a Chromebook will not be discoverable until you turn it on.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Turn it on and choose who can see you

  1. Click the clock to open Quick Settings.
  2. Select Quick Share and switch it on.
  3. Open the visibility setting and choose one of the available audiences: Your devices, Contacts, Hidden, or temporary Available to everyone.
  4. On the sending device, choose Share, select Quick Share, pick the Chromebook and accept the transfer on the receiving device.

“Available to everyone” is intended for a quick hand-off and automatically lasts for up to 10 minutes. Use Your devices for your own signed-in hardware, Contacts when you want known people to find you, and Hidden when you prefer to approve transfers only after starting them. Turn visibility back down after a public transfer.

Compatibility and managed-device rules

Google’s cited requirements are ChromeOS 91 or later and Android 6.0 or later. Windows PCs can participate when their Quick Share support is installed and enabled. Both devices need to be close enough for the wireless connection, and the recipient must accept the item; an internet connection is not generally needed for the local hand-off. Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and nearby-device permissions may be requested by the operating system. A company or school administrator can restrict Quick Share, so a missing toggle is not necessarily a hardware fault.

4. Organize your day with Virtual Desks

Virtual Desks create separate workspaces inside one Chromebook. Put documents and terminals on a Work desk, chat and meeting tabs on a Communication desk, and personal browsing on another. Windows remain open but do not crowd one screen, reducing the need to constantly minimize and restore them.

Create a practical desk layout

  1. Open the Chromebook’s Overview view, where open windows are displayed.
  2. Choose the control to add a new desk, then give it a recognizable name if ChromeOS offers naming.
  3. Drag existing windows to the desk where they belong, or open new windows after switching to that desk.
  4. Use Overview whenever you need to move a window, close a desk or see which workspace is active.

ChromeOS releases can change the exact button label or keyboard shortcut, but the Overview screen remains the reliable place to manage desks. Start with two or three desks; creating one for every task makes switching harder. A desk is an organizational boundary, not a security boundary, so do not use it to isolate sensitive accounts from another person using the same logged-in session.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Add a larger screen when desks are not enough

Google’s home-use guidance also recommends connecting a Chromebook to a monitor or TV. An external display gives Virtual Desks more room for side-by-side documents, a terminal and a video call. Compatibility depends on the Chromebook’s available ports and the display’s inputs; check whether your model offers USB-C DisplayPort, HDMI or another output before buying an external monitor for Chromebook. ChromeOS may mirror the built-in display or extend it, depending on the display settings and hardware.

5. Use Screen Capture instead of extra software

The built-in Screen Capture tool handles both still images and recordings. You can capture the entire screen, a selected rectangle or one window, then record those same scopes as video. It is suitable for a support report, a lesson, a bug reproduction or a short demonstration without installing an extension.

Capture a screenshot or recording

  1. Click the clock and open Quick Settings, then select Screen Capture.
  2. Choose Screenshot or Record.
  3. Select full screen, partial area or window mode.
  4. For a recording, open the options before starting and choose whether to include device audio, microphone audio, the front camera, and indicators for clicks or key presses.
  5. Start the capture and stop it from the on-screen control. The documented keyboard shortcut to stop recording is Search + Shift + X.

Captures are automatically copied to the clipboard, which lets you paste a screenshot directly into a message or document. Unless you change the destination, screenshots and recordings are saved in Downloads. Move completed recordings to a better-organized folder or external storage if you create large videos regularly.

Recording pitfalls

  • Choose device audio when the viewer needs to hear Chromebook playback; choose the microphone when you are narrating. Enable both only when you actually need a mixed recording.
  • Turn on click and key-press indicators for tutorials, but leave them off for a clean presentation.
  • A black or missing video from a streaming service may reflect that service’s content protection rather than a Screen Capture failure.
  • Check free storage before a long recording. The tool saves locally, so a full drive can stop a recording or prevent the file from being written.

Accessibility controls worth enabling

Accessibility settings are useful even if you do not identify as disabled. ChromeOS includes a screen reader, Select-to-speak, dictation, magnification, color correction, captions, navigation buttons, cursor controls and reduced animations. A reader who needs larger text can combine magnification with cursor changes; someone who cannot use a physical keyboard can use dictation and on-screen navigation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Settings and search for Accessibility.
  2. Enable the individual services you need, such as Select-to-speak, Dictation, captions or magnification.
  3. Turn on Always show accessibility options in the system menu if you want a quick toggle beside the clock.

When settings sync is enabled for the same account, accessibility preferences can sync across Chromebooks. Review that behavior on shared or managed devices before enabling synchronization, because a setting intended for one person may not suit another user.

Choosing the right combination

  • For coding: enable Linux first, then use Virtual Desks to separate the terminal, documentation and communication.
  • For an Android-heavy workflow: pair Phone Hub and use Quick Share for files, links and photos.
  • For teaching or support: enable Screen Capture, microphone or click indicators as needed, and keep captures organized outside Downloads.
  • For a shared household Chromebook: use conservative Quick Share visibility, review Phone Hub permissions and turn on only the accessibility controls each person needs.

These features complement one another: Linux adds development tools, Phone Hub connects your phone, Quick Share moves local content, Virtual Desks organize windows, and Screen Capture documents what is on screen. If a switch is missing, check the ChromeOS or Android version and whether a work or school administrator manages the device before resetting anything.
