5 Cheap Streaming Devices: Choose the Right Fit for Your TV

A practical comparison of five budget streaming devices, with guidance on choosing HD or 4K, checking HDR compatibility, and judging temporary deals.

The right cheap streaming device depends on your TV and the features you will actually use. For a 1080p set, an HD stick may be enough; for a compatible 4K TV, compare the extra cost against 4K and HDR support. The five options below cover both resolutions and include sticks and boxes. They are a shortlist based on published specifications and Consumer Reports’ 2026 buying guide—not hands-on test results.

Can a streaming device replace cable or satellite TV?

It can serve as your main way to watch television over an internet connection. Roku says its players provide access to internet-delivered live channels, news, sports, and on-demand entertainment. The device itself does not automatically include paid streaming subscriptions, so account for any services you plan to use separately.

Five inexpensive streaming devices to consider

Prices vary by retailer and date. Consumer Reports’ prices below are approximate retail figures from its 2026 buying guide; its overall scores are based on its own tests, not tests conducted for this article. Promotional prices are identified separately and should not be treated as ongoing prices.

Device Best fit Key features established by the cited source Published price or score
Roku Streaming Stick 4K A general-purpose 4K stick, especially if you want Dolby Vision or HDR10+ support. Roku lists Dolby Vision, HDR10+, and long-range Wi-Fi. Its product page describes TV power and volume controls on the Voice Remote. Consumer Reports (2026): approximate retail price $50; overall score 63. Roku showed a limited-time $44.99 offer against $79.99 when accessed October 7, 2026; Roku said the offer was while supplies lasted.
Amazon Fire TV Stick HD (2026) A lower-cost HD option for a 1080p TV or a secondary set where 4K is unnecessary. Amazon lists Wi-Fi 6 and direct TV USB power. Confirm that the TV’s USB port can power the stick; Ethernet requires an adapter. Price not stated in the cited Amazon specification page or the cited Consumer Reports figures.
Amazon Fire TV Stick 4K Plus (2025) A 4K option for households that prefer Amazon’s streaming platform and remote. Amazon lists 4K, Dolby Vision, HDR10+, Dolby Atmos, and Wi-Fi 6. The remote has dedicated power and volume buttons. Price not stated for this exact model in the cited specification page. Tom’s Guide reported a $29 Prime Day deal, down from $59, on a refreshed Fire TV Stick 4K on October 6, 2026; that deal is not a lasting price and is not evidence of this exact model’s current price.
Onn 4K Plus Streaming Device A lower-cost 4K candidate if you find the exact model available at a suitable price. Consumer Reports lists it in its 2026 buying guide. The cited guide does not establish the connectivity, remote, or HDR details shown for the other models here. Consumer Reports (2026): approximate retail price $30; overall score 61.
Onn Google TV 4K Streaming Box A low-cost set-top box for shoppers who want a Google TV device. Consumer Reports lists it in its 2026 buying guide. Verify the exact model because the guide’s listing does not establish current retailer stock. Consumer Reports (2026): approximate retail price $20; overall score 58.

How to choose without paying for features you will not use

Match the resolution to the television

If the TV is 1080p, an HD stick is generally sufficient for that screen. A 4K player makes more sense with a 4K TV and 4K content; it cannot make a 1080p TV display 4K. If a 4K model costs only a little more and you expect to replace the TV soon, that may affect the value calculation, but the current price difference depends on the retailer.

  • TV, simplified: With setup that only takes minutes, a simple-to-navigate Home Screen, and an uncluttered remote control that does all you need—Roku makes it easier to watch the TV you love.

Check HDR and audio across the whole setup

HDR format support matters only when the player, television, and content all support the format. Roku lists Dolby Vision and HDR10+ for its Streaming Stick 4K; Amazon lists Dolby Vision, HDR10+, and Dolby Atmos for the Fire TV Stick 4K Plus. Those specifications do not establish that every show or television supports those formats. Check your TV’s capabilities and the content you watch before paying extra for them.

Consider Wi-Fi, Ethernet, and power

Roku emphasizes long-range Wi-Fi on its 4K stick, while Amazon lists Wi-Fi 6 on the HD and 4K Plus sticks. A Wi-Fi standard alone does not guarantee a strong connection in every room: placement, router capability, and signal strength also matter. If you need wired Ethernet, the cited Amazon specifications say an adapter is required for the Fire TV Stick HD. The Fire TV Stick HD’s direct TV USB power can reduce cable clutter, but only if the television’s USB port can provide compatible power.

  • No more fumbling in the dark: See what you’re pressing with backlit buttons.

Pick the interface and remote your household will use

Streaming interfaces and voice assistants differ, so choose a platform that suits the services and controls your household prefers. Check remote functions as well as the device: Roku advertises TV power and volume controls on its Voice Remote, and Amazon lists dedicated power and volume buttons on the Fire TV Stick 4K Plus remote. These details can help reduce remote swapping, but the cited specifications do not establish compatibility with every TV.

Compare the total cost, not just a deal banner

Separate the device’s purchase price from paid subscriptions and any adapter or other accessory you need. Treat the dated Roku and Fire TV offers as temporary promotions, not dependable everyday prices. The approximate Consumer Reports prices are useful reference points, not guaranteed current checkout prices.
