Choose laptop RAM by the capacity you need and whether the exact laptop supports replacement—not by the memory format alone. Soldered LPDDR is fixed to the system board; CAMM2 and LPCAMM2 are removable module families. LPCAMM2 uses LPDDR memory in a removable format, but its speed, capacity and upgrade path still depend on the laptop and its approved parts.
What are CAMM2, LPCAMM2 and soldered RAM?
Soldered LPDDR
Soldered memory packages are attached directly to the system board, so owners generally cannot replace or add RAM modules. This arrangement is common in LPDDR designs. Framework explains that LPDDR was designed for lower voltage and power efficiency, while its traditional close-proximity implementation limits upgradeability: Framework’s LPCAMM2 explainer.

CAMM2
CAMM2 is a standardized removable module family. Framework describes CAMM2 in the context of DDR5; do not assume every older or proprietary CAMM implementation is the same standard or is compatible with a CAMM2 laptop. The laptop maker’s specification determines what can be installed.

LPCAMM2 places LPDDR5X memory packages on a removable module using a compression interposer. Its aim is to retain LPDDR characteristics while providing a module that can be replaced. Framework notes that early module revisions changed during standard development, so the standard name alone does not establish compatibility. See Framework’s explanation of LPCAMM2 and Micron’s LPCAMM2 product information.

- A-Tech 16GB RAM Module, DDR4 SO-DIMM 260-Pin, 3200MHz PC4-25600 (PC4-3200AA)
- Non-ECC Unbuffered, JEDEC DDR4 Standard 1.2V Operating Voltage
- Compatible with select Laptop, Notebook, Mini PC, and All-in-One (AIO) systems. Please verify your system's memory type, form factor, and maximum supported capacity before purchasing
- Not compatible with desktop DIMM, non DDR4 memory, or ECC memory types such as RDIMM, LRDIMM, and ECC UDIMM
- Increases available memory capacity to enhance system responsiveness, application performance, and multitasking capabilities.
CAMM2 and LPCAMM2 are distinct labels, not interchangeable names. Ordinary DDR5 SO-DIMM memory is not a substitute for LPCAMM2; match the laptop’s exact standard and supported module specification.
Which format matters most to a laptop buyer?
The practical differences are whether memory can be replaced, what memory technology the design uses, and which capacities and speeds the laptop supports. These are broad format-level distinctions, not guarantees about every laptop.
| Buying question | Soldered LPDDR | LPCAMM2 | DDR5 CAMM2 or SO-DIMM |
|---|---|---|---|
| Can the memory module be replaced? | Generally no; memory is attached to the board. | Yes, when the laptop is designed for a replaceable module. | Yes, where the laptop provides and supports the relevant module. |
| Memory type in the cited descriptions | LPDDR attached to the board. | LPDDR5X packages on a removable module. | DDR5 in Framework’s CAMM2 and SO-DIMM examples. |
| What sets capacity and speed? | The laptop configuration. | The laptop, processor, firmware, module revision and available parts. | The laptop, module slots and supported parts. |
| Potential buyer advantage | Supports a compact, low-power system design. | Pairs LPDDR characteristics with a replacement path in supported systems. | Offers a familiar removable-memory approach; some platforms support multiple modules or higher capacities. |
| What to check before buying? | Choose enough capacity for your expected ownership period. | Confirm the precise module specification and access to compatible replacements. | Check the slot count, memory generation, maximum capacity and service access. |
These distinctions summarize the documented formats and specific manufacturer examples; they do not mean every laptop in a column has identical performance or serviceability. See Framework, Framework’s Laptop 13 Pro FAQ, Dell’s Pro 5 14 service manual and Samsung Semiconductor’s LPCAMM2 information.

How much RAM should you buy?
If memory is soldered, make the capacity decision at purchase: the laptop generally cannot be upgraded later. Framework’s guidance offers useful workload examples, not universal minimums: 16GB for typical everyday work, 32GB for heavier development or editing, and 64GB for more intensive tasks such as large codebases, 3D work, data analysis or multiple virtual machines. Your actual needs depend on your applications and workload. The examples are in Framework’s Laptop 13 Pro FAQ.
With a removable module, an upgrade may be possible, but do not assume an empty slot, a particular maximum capacity or future availability. Check the exact model’s supported configurations and service documentation before treating upgradeability as a reason to buy less RAM now.
How to check compatibility and supported speed
- Identify the exact laptop configuration. A product-family name is not enough if configurations differ by processor or memory setup.
- Check the manufacturer’s memory specification and service documentation. Confirm the standard, module type, supported capacities, speed and whether the memory is replaceable.
- Match the replacement to the approved specification. Confirm module revision and other compatibility details; do not substitute a generic DDR5 SO-DIMM for LPCAMM2.
- Check processor-specific speed limits. A module’s advertised maximum is not a promise that the laptop will run it at that speed.
For example, Micron advertises LPCAMM2 transfer capability up to 9600 Mb/s, but that is a vendor capability statement, not a guaranteed speed in every laptop. Framework says its current LPCAMM2 modules can run up to 8533 MT/s, while specified Core Ultra Series 3 configurations are limited to 7467 MT/s and the listed Core Ultra 5 325 configuration to 6800 MT/s. These are Framework Laptop 13 Pro figures; verify the configuration-specific details in its FAQ and compare them with Micron’s product information.

Do LPCAMM2 power and space claims mean longer battery life?
Not by themselves. Micron claims up to 64% space efficiency, up to 61% less active power and up to 80% less system standby power compared with DDR5 SO-DIMM. Micron’s power figures are measured per 64-bit bus at the same LPDDR5X speed as SO-DIMM; its space-efficiency comparison refers to the total volume of specified commercially available dual-stacked DDR5 SO-DIMM and LPCAMM2 modules. Samsung separately claims a 60% smaller mounting area and comparative power reductions. These are manufacturer comparisons, not measurements of whole-laptop battery life. See Micron and Samsung Semiconductor.

A removable module creates the possibility of replacement, but a useful upgrade path also depends on compatible parts being available and the module being installed correctly. Dell’s service manual for the Pro 5 14 P514260 documents an LPCAMM2 replacement procedure: the interposer must be handled carefully, the module aligned, a heat sink fitted and three screws tightened in sequence. Dell cautions: “To avoid bending the pins and damaging the LPCAMM2 memory interposer, hold the interposer by the edges while handling it.” Follow the service instructions for the exact laptop, or use a qualified service provider: Dell Pro 5 14 service manual.

Framework’s Laptop 13 Pro FAQ lists 16GB, 32GB and 64GB module options and states that the platform supports up to 96GB. That example shows why a laptop’s maximum platform support and the capacities offered as configurations are different details to check. See Framework’s FAQ.
Which laptop RAM option should you choose?
- Choose a soldered-memory laptop if its available capacity suits your expected workload and ownership period; do not count on adding RAM later.
- Choose an LPCAMM2 laptop if you want LPDDR in a removable format, but only after confirming the exact module, supported configurations, service process and replacement-part access.
- Choose a CAMM2 or SO-DIMM laptop when its documented module support and upgrade options fit your needs. Check the exact memory generation, slot arrangement, maximum capacity and service access.
None of the three labels, by itself, tells you which laptop will be fastest or last longest on battery. The useful comparison is between complete laptop configurations: capacity, processor-specific memory support and a realistic replacement path.
