The most useful website-support chatbots do not try to hold every conversation. They are designed around a specific job: answering repeat questions, finding products or pricing information, routing a difficult case to a person, or helping an agent answer faster. The five examples below show distinct patterns from Intercom, Zendesk and Salesforce customer stories and product guidance. Each includes the visitor task, information the bot can use, escalation design and the outcome the publisher reports.
Five chatbot patterns at a glance
These examples come from vendor-published customer stories or product guidance, not a shared independent test. The figures use different definitions and measurement methods, so treat them as illustrations of what a deployment targeted rather than as a performance benchmark.

| Example | Primary task | Answer sources | Human path | Reported signal |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| RateMyAgent with Intercom | Consolidate marketing and support conversations | Unified customer-message history and support context | Conversation remains in the support workspace for follow-up | Intercom reports an 80% reduction in median response time versus email |
| Best Egg with Zendesk AI | Automate recurring chat inquiries | Configured support knowledge and intent handling | Unresolved questions can move to the support team | Zendesk says 80% of chat inquiries are automated |
| Zendesk always-available chatbot | Give visitors a first response outside staffed hours | Approved help content and service policies | Clear route to a person when the team is available | Zendesk presents availability and speed as product use cases |
| Salesforce Agentforce for websites | Product and pricing discovery | More than 2,000 web pages and more than 400 catalog records in the described deployment | Transfers the conversation and summary to a sales development representative | Salesforce reports 150 representative hours saved per month |
| Intercom Copilot for support teams | Help human agents find answers quickly | Internal support documentation | The human agent remains responsible for the reply | A customer quoted by Intercom calls it the quickest way to find answers without searching manually |
The important comparison is not which percentage is largest. It is whether the bot’s job, source material, escalation path and success measure match your site’s support problem.

The problem this pattern solves
RateMyAgent used Intercom to bring marketing and support messaging into one place. Instead of splitting a customer’s history between email and other channels, the team could see the conversation and continue it in a shared workspace. This is useful when a visitor starts with a marketing question, becomes a support case, and would otherwise be passed between inboxes.

- [Deep Bass with Clear Vocals] High-performance drivers produce punchy bass while keeping vocals clean and detailed for everyday listening.
How the workflow works
- A visitor starts a conversation through the website or another connected messaging channel.
- The message is kept with the customer’s existing conversation history, giving the support team context before replying.
- Automation handles straightforward routing or replies, while a teammate takes over questions that require judgment.
- The team measures the time from the customer’s message to a response, rather than counting only bot interactions.
Intercom’s customer-story page says RateMyAgent achieved an 80% reduction in median response time compared with email. That is a vendor-published claim; the page excerpt does not state a publication year or methodology, so it should not be treated as an independently validated forecast for another company. See the Intercom customer stories.
When to copy the idea
- Your support and marketing teams answer from separate inboxes and customers repeat their history.
- Median response time is slowed by assigning, forwarding or searching for prior messages.
- You need a bot for first-touch triage but still want a person to own the eventual resolution.
Limitations to plan for
Conversation consolidation is not the same as resolution automation. A unified inbox can expose context, but it does not make an outdated help article correct or guarantee that a specialist is available. Define ownership rules, working hours and a fallback queue before turning on automated replies.
2. Best Egg: automate recurring inquiries
The problem this pattern solves
Best Egg is listed in Zendesk’s customer directory as an example of using Zendesk AI to automate a large share of chat inquiries. This pattern targets questions with stable answers, such as account-process explanations, eligibility guidance or routine status requests, so agents can concentrate on exceptions.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsHow to design the automation
- Collect several weeks of chat transcripts and group them by customer intent, not by the wording of individual messages.
- Choose intents with a clear answer and a low risk of harm if the customer follows it.
- Connect each intent to an approved article, policy or workflow. Include the effective date where a policy can change.
- Ask a clarifying question when the same words could indicate different cases.
- Offer a human route when the answer is uncertain, the customer disputes an outcome or the issue involves private account details.
- Review failed and escalated conversations regularly and update the source article before expanding the bot’s scope.
Zendesk’s directory says the Best Egg deployment automates 80% of chat inquiries. The listing does not describe the measurement period or methodology, so use the figure as a customer-story claim and an example of an automation target, not as an expected result. What makes this pattern safe
- Bounded topics: the bot answers known questions instead of improvising across the entire site.
- Evidence-based replies: every answer points to a current support source or process.
- Exception handling: uncertainty and sensitive cases go to trained staff.
- Quality review: escalations reveal where an article, policy or intent model needs work.
Where it can fail
A high automation rate can hide poor service if customers abandon the chat or contact the company again. Track containment together with repeat contacts, escalation reasons, customer feedback and successful completion of the underlying task. Do not label a conversation “automated” merely because the bot sent a message; decide whether the customer actually received a usable answer.
3. Zendesk’s always-available first response
The problem this pattern solves
Many websites receive questions outside staffed hours. Zendesk’s customer-service chatbot guidance presents availability beyond those hours and fast initial responses as core use cases. The bot’s job is not necessarily to close the case overnight. It can acknowledge the request, answer a documented question, collect the details an agent will need and set an accurate expectation for the next step.
Build an after-hours experience
- Display the bot when your team is offline, and state the actual hours for human support in the opening message.
- Offer a short menu of high-volume topics such as order status, returns, account access or service interruptions.
- For each topic, provide the approved answer or gather structured details such as order number, email address and a description of the issue.
- Confirm what will happen next: an email reply, a queued ticket or a callback request. Do not promise an immediate human response if none is available.
- Preserve the transcript and collected fields so the customer does not have to repeat them.
- Audit overnight conversations the next business day for wrong answers, missing context and cases that should have been escalated sooner.
Zendesk’s guidance, last updated July 21, 2026, describes these as product use cases rather than a universal guarantee that every chatbot improves service. Read the current guidance at Zendesk’s customer-service chatbot page.

This approach suits sites with predictable after-hours demand and a team that can process the queue later. It is a poor fit if the bot cannot access the systems needed to answer status questions or if a delayed response could create safety, financial or legal risk. In those cases, show emergency or urgent-contact instructions prominently instead of hiding them behind automation.

4. Salesforce Agentforce: answer product and pricing questions from site content
The problem this pattern solves
Salesforce’s Agentforce website case study demonstrates a bot for visitors who are researching products, prices and capabilities. Rather than relying only on a small FAQ, the described agent searches more than 2,000 pages in Salesforce’s content system and more than 400 product and customer catalog records. That combination lets it answer questions that depend on both explanatory website content and structured product data.
The discovery-to-handoff flow
- A visitor asks about a product, feature, use case or price.
- The agent searches approved website pages and catalog records for relevant information.
- It presents an answer grounded in that content and can continue with follow-up questions to narrow the visitor’s needs.
- If the visitor wants a person, the agent transfers the conversation to a sales development representative.
- The representative receives a conversation summary, reducing the need to restart discovery.
Salesforce reports that the deployment saves 150 representative hours per month. This is Salesforce’s own outcome for the case study, not an independent benchmark. The full description is at Salesforce’s Agentforce website case study.
Content and governance requirements
- Structured catalog data: prices, availability, editions and product names must be maintained separately from marketing copy.
- Freshness controls: remove or update pages that contain retired products, regional restrictions or old pricing.
- Source boundaries: specify which pages and records the agent may use; an unrestricted crawl can surface contradictory content.
- Handoff context: pass the visitor’s questions, selected products and stated requirements to the representative.
Who should use this pattern
It is most relevant to companies with a large documentation or catalog footprint and a sales team that spends time answering pre-purchase questions. A small site with ten static pages may gain more from a focused FAQ bot than from a broad content-search agent.
5. Intercom Copilot: use support knowledge to assist agents
The problem this pattern solves
Not every useful chatbot faces the customer. Intercom describes Copilot as an internal assistant that draws on support documentation so an agent can find a reliable answer without searching through multiple articles. The human still decides what to send, which makes this pattern useful when answers require tone, account context or judgment that should not be delegated to automation.

A practical agent-assist workflow
- Organize support documentation by product area, task and audience; archive contradictory or obsolete pages.
- Give Copilot access only to sources approved for support use.
- When a customer asks a question, the agent requests a suggested answer or relevant article.
- The agent checks the suggestion against the customer’s account, plan, region and conversation history.
- The agent edits the wording, adds any required policy language and sends the final response.
- Mark incorrect or missing suggestions so the knowledge base can be improved.
Intercom presents a quotation from Abigail Whitwham, Customer Success Manager: “We have also been using Copilot internally and we have found that it is the quickest way to find answers without having to waste time searching yourself.” It is a customer statement published by Intercom, not an independent assessment. The quotation appears on Intercom’s customer stories page.
Why agent assist can be the better first step
An internal assistant reduces the risk of an unsupervised bot making a confident mistake while still addressing the time lost to documentation searches. It also produces a natural review loop: agents see which sources are useful, where suggestions fail and which questions deserve a customer-facing workflow later.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to choose the right chatbot pattern
Start with the visitor or agent task, not the technology label. Use this decision sequence:
Recommended Free Tools
- Identify the bottleneck. Slow first replies point toward an always-available first response; repeated questions point toward bounded automation; product research points toward a content-and-catalog agent; long internal searches point toward agent assist.
- Inventory the answer sources. List the help articles, policies, catalog records and account systems the bot would need. If a source is missing or contradictory, fix it before expanding automation.
- Define the handoff. Specify when a person takes over, what transcript or fields they receive and what the customer is told about timing.
- Choose a measurable outcome. Examples include median first-response time, successful self-service completion, correctly routed conversations, repeat-contact rate or agent search time. Keep the definition stable during a pilot.
- Set boundaries. Exclude sensitive, high-risk or ambiguous cases until you have reliable verification and escalation procedures.
- Review real failures. Sample unanswered, abandoned and escalated chats. Improve the source content and routing rules before adding more intents.
Implementation checklist for a website support bot
- Write a one-sentence job description, such as “answer return-policy questions and create a ticket when the policy does not resolve the issue.”
- Prepare a source list with owners and review dates.
- Create a welcome message that identifies the bot and offers a human option where available.
- Design short paths for the five to ten highest-volume intents instead of launching an unlimited free-form bot.
- Capture the minimum information needed for a human to continue the case.
- Test misspellings, incomplete questions, conflicting policy pages and requests outside the bot’s scope.
- Launch to a limited audience or topic set, then compare the chosen outcome measure with the pre-launch baseline.
- Give support staff a way to correct answers and flag unsafe or outdated content.
What these examples do—and do not—prove
The five patterns demonstrate practical designs: unified conversations, recurring-inquiry automation, after-hours triage, content-and-catalog discovery, and internal agent assistance. The published outcomes are not directly comparable because one concerns median response time, another concerns the share of inquiries automated, and another concerns representative hours. None of the cited pages supplies a common independent methodology. Use the stories to choose a workflow and measurement plan, then judge your own deployment by whether customers complete their task and whether staff receive the context they need.

Frequently Asked Questions
Frequently Asked Questions
Should a website chatbot replace human support?
No. The strongest examples define a limited job and provide escalation for uncertainty, sensitive cases or requests that require judgment. A transcript and collected details should accompany the handoff so the customer does not start over.
Which chatbot example is best for a small website?
A bounded recurring-question or after-hours first-response flow is usually simpler than searching thousands of pages and catalog records. Start with a small set of intents supported by current, clearly owned articles.
Are the 80% figures in the examples comparable?
No. Intercom’s 80% figure is a reported reduction in RateMyAgent’s median response time versus email, while Zendesk’s 80% figure is the share of Best Egg chat inquiries it says are automated. The cited pages do not provide a shared measurement method.

Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →What content should a support bot use?
Use approved help articles, current policies and, when relevant, structured product or catalog records. Assign owners and review dates, and prevent outdated or contradictory pages from being retrieved.
How do I measure whether the bot helps customers?
Choose one primary outcome before launch—such as successful self-service completion or median first-response time—and pair it with safeguards such as repeat contacts, abandonment, escalation reasons and human quality review.
Is an internal agent assistant safer than a customer-facing bot?
It can reduce exposure because a trained agent reviews the suggested answer, but it still requires reliable source content and account-specific checks. The human remains responsible for the final response.
