5 Budget Routers Worth Comparing for Home Wi-Fi

The Archer AX55 is the strongest-supported budget Wi-Fi 6 pick, but the best router for your home depends on coverage, ports, and current local pricing.

The TP-Link Archer AX55 is the strongest-supported budget Wi-Fi 6 choice in the available comparisons, but there is no shared test or verified price list establishing a definitive five-way ranking. This guide compares five options by role instead: one test-backed main pick, three alternatives with distinct trade-offs, and one specification-based option. Prices and stock can vary by retailer and region; check current listings before buying.

How to choose among these budget routers

For a small home or apartment with a typical internet plan, start with a single-router Wi-Fi 6 model such as the Archer AX55. Look beyond the model’s AX rating: consider the size and layout of your home, the devices you use, and whether your internet service or wired equipment needs ports faster than gigabit. If one router leaves persistent dead zones, compare the total cost of a mesh system rather than assuming a more expensive standalone router will solve every coverage problem.

This is a role-based shortlist, not a matched five-router ranking. The Archer AX55 has independent reviewer measurements; the other models below have different levels of evidence, so their positions do not imply equivalent performance. No current five-model price comparison is established here.

Five budget router options

1. TP-Link Archer AX55: the best-supported budget Wi-Fi 6 pick

RTINGS names the AX55 its tested budget pick, and Tom’s Guide selects it as a budget Wi-Fi 6 option. In Tom’s Guide’s 2026 test environment, it recorded 823.7 Mbps at 15 feet, 288.4 Mbps at 50 feet, and 89.6 Mbps at 75 feet. These are publication-specific results at stated distances, not expected speeds in every home. See RTINGS’ 2026 budget-router roundup and Tom’s Guide’s Wi-Fi 6 router picks.

TP-Link AX1800 WiFi 6 Router (Archer AX21 V5) | Dual Band Wireless Internet, Gigabit, Easy Mesh, Works with Alexa - A Certified for Humans Device
  • DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
  • AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
  • CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
  • EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
  • OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.

TP-Link lists theoretical wireless rates of 2402 Mbps on 5 GHz and 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz for the AX55. The AX3000 label describes a combined wireless class rate, not the speed of an internet download. Actual throughput depends on the router, client device, signal conditions, interference, and internet service. The manufacturer’s specification is on its Canada Archer AX55 page.

Tom’s Guide lists one gigabit WAN port, four gigabit LAN ports, and USB 3.0. It has no multi-gig port, so it is a poor port match if you need a multi-gig connection from your ISP or faster-than-gigabit wired links. The reviewer recommends it particularly for smaller homes or apartments without multi-gig internet.

2. TP-Link Archer AX21: an entry-level Wi-Fi 6 alternative

TP-Link describes the AX21 as a dual-band AX1800 Wi-Fi 6 router and lists WPA3 and OneMesh support. Its 1.8 Gbps class figure is a theoretical wireless rate, not a real-world internet-speed promise. The manufacturer’s US page currently shows hardware revision V5 and links to earlier revisions; check the revision and local product listing before purchase because specifications and support can vary by version. 3. TP-Link Archer AX10: a low-cost candidate to verify

RTINGS identifies the AX10 as its cheap pick in its 2026 roundup. The available comparison does not establish enough detailed specifications or performance measurements to make a full comparison with the AX55. Treat it as a candidate if its current local price is attractive, then verify the exact hardware version, ports, security support, and availability on the retailer and manufacturer pages before deciding. RTINGS’ 2026 roundup

4. TP-Link Archer BE3600: a Wi-Fi 7 stretch option

Tom’s Guide reports that the BE3600 is often available around $100, but that is a time-sensitive price observation, not a guaranteed offer. The reviewer describes it as a dual-band Wi-Fi 7 router with a 2.5 GbE input and output, three gigabit LAN ports, and USB. It does not include the 6 GHz band, so do not mistake it for a tri-band Wi-Fi 7 model.

In Tom’s Guide’s 2026 test data, the BE3600 measured 702.3 Mbps at 50 feet, 205.2 Mbps at 75 feet, and 15.5 Mbps at 90 feet. The same page gives conflicting close-range figures—1.38 Gbps in prose and 1.138 Gbps in displayed data—so neither should be treated here as a settled result. Check the Tom’s Guide 2026 router roundup and current local pricing before treating it as a value upgrade.

5. ASUS RT-AX55: a specification-based alternative

ASUS lists WPA3-Personal support and security and network features for the RT-AX55. The available source does not provide a matched independent performance test against the TP-Link AX55, so it does not establish that one is faster or better value. Check the specific regional model and feature support before buying. ASUS RT-AX55 specifications

What AX1800, AX3000, and Wi-Fi 7 do—and do not—tell you

AX1800 and AX3000 are wireless class labels based on theoretical combined band rates. They are not promises that one device will receive 1.8 or 3.0 Gbps from the internet. Real speeds are affected by the router-client connection, distance and obstacles, radio congestion, client capabilities, and the speed of the internet plan. A higher class label alone does not guarantee better coverage or faster downloads in a particular home.

Wi-Fi 7 is a newer wireless generation, but check the bands and ports on the specific router. The BE3600 example is dual-band and lacks 6 GHz despite its Wi-Fi 7 label. Its 2.5 GbE ports may be useful for compatible multi-gig wired connections, but they do not by themselves increase the speed of a slower internet plan.

Choose a single router or mesh based on coverage

A single router is often enough for a smaller space

For a compact apartment or small home without stubborn dead zones, one well-placed router may be sufficient. Mesh adds another device or devices and cost, so it can be unnecessary overhead when one router already covers the rooms you use.

Consider mesh when the layout creates dead zones

A large or awkwardly shaped home, multiple floors, or persistent weak-signal rooms can make mesh worth comparing. Include the price of the additional node or nodes in the total, and verify that the router and mesh equipment are compatible. TP-Link lists EasyMesh compatibility for the AX55; confirm the exact device and regional hardware revision before choosing a node. Mesh can improve coverage, but the evidence here does not establish that it will outperform a single router in every layout.

Check these details before you buy

  • Internet plan: If your service exceeds gigabit, check for a multi-gig WAN port. The AX55’s reviewed WAN connection is gigabit.
  • Wired devices: Count the LAN ports you need and confirm their link speeds; a Wi-Fi class label does not describe wired-port capacity.
  • Home coverage: Consider walls, floors, and router placement. Compare a mesh system only if the coverage problem justifies its extra equipment and cost.
  • Devices and security: Confirm that the exact model revision supports the security and wireless features your devices need. A listed feature does not mean every client supports every mode.
  • Total price: Compare current local prices, shipping, and any required mesh node. The reported BE3600 price is not a live offer, and no common-date price check across all five models is established here.
