There is no single Android VPN winner for every user: speed tests use different methods, and privacy, streaming, free access, and price point to different choices. For a speed-focused pick, NordVPN has a strong result in one disclosed 2026 third-party test; Proton VPN is worth considering for its provider-described unlimited-data free tier; and Mullvad is a privacy-oriented choice in RTINGS’ testing. The right fit depends on which trade-offs matter to you.
How these Android VPN picks were chosen
This is a criteria-based shortlist, not a universal ranking. The available comparisons do not establish one apples-to-apples test covering all five services, devices, networks, and prices. Security.org’s hands-on Android comparison ranks NordVPN first, Surfshark second, Proton VPN third, IPVanish fourth, Private Internet Access fifth, and ExpressVPN sixth, based on its own tests of speed, IP leaks, kill-switch behavior, no-log policies, and streaming. RTINGS instead names Mullvad its best tested Android VPN, with a privacy focus. Those verdicts answer different evaluation questions and should not be merged into a single test result.

For your own choice, weigh Android compatibility and controls, privacy evidence, performance under relevant test conditions, free-tier limits, streaming suitability, and the subscription’s renewal cost. A provider’s feature page documents what it says its app offers; it is not independent proof of a privacy claim.

Best VPNs for Android in 2026
1. NordVPN — best-supported pick for speed evidence
NordVPN is the clearest choice here if you want a pick backed by a prominent Android speed result. NordVPN’s account of Artifact Security’s 2026 performance test reports a median Android download speed of 526.6 Mbps and median upload speed of 223.3 Mbps. The Android run was London-based; the overall test covered 55 routes across five origin regions and was one round in an ongoing program. Artifact Security reportedly followed AMTSO VPN testing guidelines. These figures are test outcomes, not a forecast for your phone or connection. Your carrier or Wi-Fi, distance to the VPN server, device, and time of day can all change results. Read NordVPN’s summary of Artifact Security’s test.

Security.org also puts NordVPN first in its separate Android comparison. That is the publisher’s own ranking and methodology, not an extension of the Artifact Security measurement.
2. Proton VPN — best fit to consider for a free, no-data-limit plan
Proton says its free Android VPN has no data limits, no privacy-invading ads, and no logs. Its Android app page also lists Always-on VPN, a kill switch, NetShield for ads, trackers, and malware, split tunneling, Tor-enabled servers, and Quick Connect, which selects a server. Treat these as Proton’s own descriptions rather than independently verified guarantees. See Proton VPN’s Android app details.
The provider distinguishes free access from paid Plus servers and streaming services, so an unlimited-data free plan does not mean the same server access or streaming suitability as paid service. RTINGS also describes Proton VPN Free as an unlimited-data option with no ads. Security.org ranks Proton third in its own Android comparison.

3. Mullvad — best tested option for privacy-focused use
RTINGS names Mullvad its best tested Android VPN, emphasizing privacy-focused use and the Android app’s kill switch and privacy tools. That is RTINGS’ verdict under its criteria, not a claim that Mullvad is best for every use. RTINGS warns that streaming platforms may block Mullvad IP addresses, making it a less certain choice if access to particular streaming catalogs is your priority. See RTINGS’ Android VPN comparison.
4. Surfshark — best to consider if Android compatibility flexibility matters
Surfshark documents an Android app and manual configuration with WireGuard, OpenVPN, or IKEv2. Its compatibility page says Android 6.0 or later is supported, but the Google Play app requires Android 7.0 or later; Android 6.0 users are directed to an APK. Check that distinction before installing. Surfshark is a subscription service. Check Surfshark’s Android download and setup information.
Tom’s Guide describes Surfshark as a potential low-cost option while cautioning that renewal prices can increase and that it offers less configuration than some rivals. Because deal prices and renewal terms change, confirm the current total cost and billing period with the provider before subscribing. Security.org ranks Surfshark second in its own Android comparison.

5. ExpressVPN — best to consider for Lightway and split tunneling
Tom’s Guide describes ExpressVPN’s Android app as offering Lightway, split tunneling, and a kill switch. In the reviewed context, Lightway Turbo was not available on Android, so do not assume a feature advertised for another platform also applies to the Android app. In Artifact Security’s reported Android results, ExpressVPN followed NordVPN with median download of 494.8 Mbps and median upload of 148.9 Mbps; the figures come from that same single-round, London-based Android test summary, not a guarantee for individual users. Security.org places ExpressVPN sixth in its separate Android ranking. Read Tom’s Guide’s Android VPN guide.
What is the fastest VPN for Android?
In the specific 2026 Android test reported by NordVPN, NordVPN had the highest median download and upload figures among the named results in the account: 526.6 Mbps down and 223.3 Mbps up, compared with ExpressVPN’s 494.8 Mbps down and 148.9 Mbps up. Artifact Security’s test account describes one round, a London-based Android run, and an overall set of 55 routes from five origin regions. This supports a narrow comparison under those conditions, not a universal speed crown. Security.org reports its own provider-specific average-speed figures using a different methodology; those numbers should not be compared directly with Artifact Security’s medians.
For a useful real-world decision, test the VPN on the same phone and network you normally use, at the locations and times that matter to you. Compare the same nearby and distant server choices, and check whether browsing, calls, downloads, and streaming remain reliable—not only peak speed.

How to choose the best VPN for Android
Check Android version and installation route
Confirm your device’s Android version against the provider’s current requirements. Surfshark’s documented split between Google Play support from Android 7.0 and an APK route for Android 6.0 is a practical example of why “Android supported” may not tell the whole story. Prefer the official app-store listing or provider’s own download instructions.
Look for the controls you will actually use
- Always-on VPN: Android can keep a VPN connection active. On supported configurations, Android’s system settings can also block connections that do not use the VPN.
- Kill switch: Check what happens if the tunnel drops. A provider’s app feature and Android’s system-level lockdown behavior are not necessarily identical; verify the steps for your device and app.
- Split tunneling: Lets you choose which apps use the VPN and which connect directly. This can help with services that do not work through a VPN, but direct traffic is outside the tunnel.
- Protocol choices: WireGuard, OpenVPN, and IKEv2 are documented manual options for Surfshark. Do not assume every provider exposes the same protocols or controls in its Android app.
Separate privacy claims from privacy evidence
Read the privacy policy and determine what activity or connection data the provider says it collects, how long it retains it, and what an independent assessment actually covered. A “no logs” statement on an app page is the provider’s claim; by itself it does not establish that claim independently. The comparisons cited here do not supply a uniform audit assessment for all five services, so this shortlist cannot declare a cross-provider privacy winner on that basis.
Match streaming expectations to the service
VPN streaming access can change as platforms block server addresses. Proton says its free service does not include the same Plus servers and streaming services as paid access, while RTINGS warns Mullvad IP addresses may be blocked by streaming platforms. If a particular service or region is essential, check the provider’s current terms and test it during any available refund period rather than assuming a general “streaming” label guarantees access.

Compare full subscription cost, not just an introductory deal
The sources available for this comparison do not establish current, comparable prices and renewal totals for all five providers. Deal prices are volatile, and Tom’s Guide specifically cautions about Surfshark renewal increases. Before paying, verify the plan length, introductory term, recurring renewal amount, taxes where applicable, and cancellation deadline on the provider’s checkout page.
Should you use a free VPN on Android?
A free plan can be a reasonable starting point when its limits match your use, but inspect server access, speed, streaming availability, and privacy terms as well as data allowance. Proton describes its free plan as unlimited-data and ad-free, while also distinguishing it from paid Plus servers and streaming services. “Unlimited data” answers only one question; it does not promise paid-tier features, a particular speed, or access to every streaming platform.
