Short answer: Bitwarden has the lower-cost option, including a free personal plan, while 1Password builds its account security around a separate Secret Key and offers family recovery tools. Both describe encrypted vault designs intended to keep the provider from reading stored secrets. The available official feature descriptions do not establish that either is categorically more secure or easier to use; the better fit depends on your budget, devices, sharing needs, and preferred security model.

Which password manager is more secure?

The official descriptions support comparing how each company says it protects vault data, not declaring a security winner. 1Password highlights a separate Secret Key used alongside the account password. Bitwarden emphasizes encryption on the user’s device before data is sent to its servers, a zero-knowledge architecture, and open-source security. Neither design makes an account immune to phishing, weak passwords, a compromised device, or user error.

1Password’s account password and Secret Key

1Password says account data is protected with both an account password and a 128-bit encrypted Secret Key. Its support documentation states: “We cannot decrypt your data or collect your 1Password account password, Secret Key, or encryption keys.” The company also describes Secure Remote Password authentication, which it says avoids transmitting credentials over the internet, and features such as Watchtower alerts, verified-browser autofill, and clipboard-secret removal. These are descriptions from 1Password, not independent comparative findings. Read 1Password’s security-model explanation and its security overview.

Bitwarden’s local encryption and zero-knowledge design

Bitwarden says vault data is encrypted locally on the device before it reaches Bitwarden’s servers, with encryption keys held by the user. Its plan page also lists open-source security, phishing protection, and two-step login options. Bitwarden says it undergoes third-party security audits. These are the company’s architecture and assurance descriptions; they are not a guarantee that every threat is prevented. See Bitwarden’s plan and security-feature descriptions.

What the available assurance information can—and cannot—show

1Password lists ISO 27001:2022, ISO 27017:2015, ISO 27018:2019, and ISO 27701:2019 certifications, and says it is SOC 2 Type 2 certified. Its audit page notes that some reports may not be published when a similar scope was recently covered or a feature is unreleased. 1Password also says its products have been reviewed by multiple independent security firms. Review the company’s trust and audit information for report scope and currency. The available descriptions do not provide a like-for-like current independent audit comparing the two services, so they do not support ranking one as “the most secure.”

How to choose between them

  • Choose Bitwarden for a free starting point if you want a no-cost personal plan and broad device access.
  • Compare paid family plans by total annual cost, number of users, private versus shared vaults, and recovery controls—not just the monthly display price.
  • Compare security models by preference if the extra Secret Key in 1Password’s documented design or Bitwarden’s local-encryption and open-source emphasis matters to you. Neither description proves categorical superiority.
  • For a small team, check administration first: match SSO, role controls, reporting, self-hosting, developer features, and seat rules to your organization’s requirements.
  • Try the actual workflow with the devices and browsers you use, particularly autofill, importing, shared access, and account recovery. A feature list cannot predict personal usability.
