What Happens When Your SIM Card Is Locked?

A PUK prompt means the SIM needs its specific PUK; a carrier-lock message means the handset’s carrier restriction may need to be removed. Here’s how to tell the difference and what to do next.

A “locked SIM” can mean two different things: the SIM itself may be asking for a PIN or PUK, or the phone may be restricted to one carrier. The message on screen tells you which problem you’re dealing with—and which fix to use. A PUK prompt means stop guessing and get the code for that SIM from its carrier. A “SIM not supported” or carrier-lock message usually means the handset’s carrier restriction needs to be addressed by the carrier that locked it.

What happens when your SIM card is locked?

With a SIM PIN lock, the SIM requires its PIN to be used. After too many incorrect PIN attempts, it may ask for a PUK—the personal unlocking key associated with that specific SIM. Entering the wrong PUK too many times can make the SIM unusable and require a replacement.

A carrier or network lock is different: it is a restriction on the phone, not the SIM. It can prevent the handset from activating with another provider until the carrier removes the restriction. Unlocking removes that software restriction; it does not guarantee that the phone will work fully, or at all, on every other network.

Is a SIM PIN lock the same as a carrier lock?

No. Use the message you see to identify the likely problem before taking action:

The phone asks for a SIM PIN or PUK after incorrect PIN attempts SIM PIN lock Stop entering guesses. Get the PUK for that SIM from the carrier or matching original SIM materials. If the PUK has been exhausted, ask the carrier about a replacement SIM. [T-Mobile SIM and PUK guidance]
“SIM not supported,” “SIM card isn’t supported,” or a carrier-lock message after inserting another provider’s SIM Often a carrier/network lock, though activation or compatibility problems can also cause trouble Check the phone’s lock status where supported, then contact the carrier or seller that locked or sold it. Ask whether the unlock has been applied and check compatibility with the new provider. [Apple’s iPhone unlock guidance; Google Pixel SIM guidance]
Invalid, unregistered, or missing SIM Possible SIM fit, provisioning, device-lock, or network-registration problem Follow the carrier’s diagnostic steps. Reseating or testing a SIM may help isolate the cause, but moving a PUK-locked SIM to another phone will not unlock it.

If the wording does not make the type of lock clear, ask your provider to identify the message before entering any code. A “network unlock code” is not necessarily the SIM’s PUK.

What does a PUK code do?

A PUK restores access to a SIM after too many incorrect SIM PIN entries. It is specific to the SIM, so do not use a code from another card or guess. Find it in the original materials for that SIM, if available, or request it from the carrier that issued it. T-Mobile says a locked SIM requires its PUK, that moving the SIM to another phone will not solve the lock, and that ten incorrect PUK entries require a SIM replacement. Those details describe T-Mobile’s process; check with your own carrier for its instructions.

How do you check and resolve a carrier lock?

On iPhone

  1. Open Settings > General > About.
  2. Look for Carrier Lock. If it says No SIM restrictions, Apple identifies the iPhone as unlocked.
  3. If another carrier’s SIM is rejected, contact the carrier that currently has the lock and ask it to check eligibility and confirm the unlock was applied. Apple says only the current carrier can unlock an iPhone; Apple cannot do it for you. [Apple Support]
  4. After the carrier confirms the unlock, insert the other carrier’s SIM and allow the phone to activate. If you do not have another SIM, Apple’s instructions are to back up, erase, and restore the iPhone.

On Google Pixel

Pixel phones may be sold SIM-locked or unlocked depending on where they were purchased. If the original carrier has removed the lock and the new carrier confirms service but the new SIM still fails, Google documents connecting to Wi-Fi, installing Android updates, and refreshing SIM status. If that does not resolve it, Google describes a factory reset followed by contacting the carrier. A factory reset erases data, so follow Google’s backup guidance before proceeding. [Google Pixel support]

On other phones

Settings labels and unlock procedures vary by manufacturer and carrier. Contact the carrier or seller that sold or locked the handset, request an eligibility check, and ask for confirmation that the unlock has been applied. If you see a “network unlock code” prompt, ask the carrier which code or action is required rather than treating it as a PUK.

Who can unlock a carrier-locked phone?

Contact the carrier that applied the restriction, or the seller if it arranged the lock. Eligibility can depend on country, carrier, plan, purchase source, account status, and whether the phone is financed or leased. Policies and timing vary, so the carrier’s current rules for your specific device are the ones that matter.

For example, T-Mobile’s published policy, accessed in 2026, says eligible devices are unlocked free of charge. Its listed postpaid conditions include at least 40 days active on T-Mobile on the requesting line and satisfaction of T-Mobile financing or lease payments. For prepaid devices, the policy describes 365 days since activation or, for earlier requests, more than $100 in refills per active line along with other criteria. T-Mobile says some eligible devices are automatically and remotely unlocked within two business days; if a device cannot be remotely unlocked, it sends notification and next steps within two business days. These are T-Mobile policy terms, not universal requirements. [T-Mobile device unlock policy]

The T-Mobile Consumer Code describes industry principles for eligible device unlock policies, including unlocking qualifying postpaid devices after applicable contract or financing conditions and unlocking prepaid devices no later than a year after activation, subject to reasonable requirements. It also describes notice and response-time principles. The rules for your device still depend on your carrier’s current policy. [T-Mobile Consumer Code for Wireless Service]

Why does my phone say the SIM card isn’t supported after unlocking?

An unlock lets the phone attempt activation on another carrier; it does not make different networks technically identical. Frequencies and network technologies vary, and a handset may support only some functions on a new network—for example, voice without data. Google also cautions that Pixel model and network support varies, including across 5G networks. Before switching, check the exact phone model with the destination carrier, including the features and network types it supports. [T-Mobile Consumer Code; Google Pixel support]
