5 Best Remote Desktop Options for Raspberry Pi (2026)

Choose a Raspberry Pi remote desktop by OS version, desktop or shell needs, network setup and display-server compatibility.

For a Raspberry Pi running a supported desktop version of Raspberry Pi OS, start with Raspberry Pi Connect: it offers screen sharing without requiring you to find the Pi’s IP address. For conventional desktop sharing, enable the included wayvnc server and connect with a VNC client. NoMachine and AnyDesk are third-party alternatives with different setup and compatibility requirements; RustDesk is worth investigating if you want a public-server or self-hosted model, but its general documentation does not confirm support for every Pi setup.

There is no evidence here to rank these options by speed or performance. The right choice depends on your Raspberry Pi OS version, whether you need a graphical desktop or just a terminal, how you will connect over the network, and which display server is in use.

How to choose a Raspberry Pi remote desktop

First decide whether you need to see and control the graphical desktop or only run commands. Raspberry Pi’s remote-access guide treats VNC and Raspberry Pi Connect as graphical options and SSH as a terminal-access option. SSH is useful for administration, but it is not a remote desktop.

  • For the simplest supported Raspberry Pi OS setup: investigate Raspberry Pi Connect.
  • For familiar desktop sharing on a reachable local network: enable wayvnc and use a VNC client.
  • For a separate remote-desktop application: consider NoMachine, or check AnyDesk’s display-server limits first.
  • For a self-hosted connection model: consider RustDesk only after confirming that a compatible client exists for your particular Pi and OS.

Do not assume a tool that works on your home network is automatically ready for internet access. Avoid exposing remote-access services to the public internet unless you understand and have configured the security and network implications.

Compare the five options

Option Best fit Key requirement or limitation Connection model
Raspberry Pi Connect Supported Raspberry Pi OS users who want integrated access Screen sharing requires Raspberry Pi OS Bookworm or later; Lite supports remote shell only Links the Pi to a Connect account; intended for access from anywhere
VNC / wayvnc Conventional desktop sharing, especially on a local network wayvnc is included in Raspberry Pi OS, but the VNC server must be enabled VNC client connects to the Pi; the straightforward local setup uses its local IP address
NoMachine Users seeking a separate remote-desktop application for Pi ARM devices Choose the package matching the Pi’s architecture; connect using an IP address or Machine ID and the target system account credentials Vendor application; setup documented for Raspberry Pi ARM
AnyDesk Users whose Pi’s display server and desired session direction are compatible Wayland supports outgoing sessions only; incoming sessions require Xorg Vendor application; check the display-server restriction before installing
RustDesk Technically confident users considering public-server or self-hosted connections Its general client documentation does not establish compatibility with every Raspberry Pi OS and architecture combination Connect through RustDesk public servers or a self-hosted RustDesk Server

1. Raspberry Pi Connect: easiest first option for supported Raspberry Pi OS

Raspberry Pi documents Connect as a free screen-sharing and remote-shell service. It is installed by default in Raspberry Pi OS Desktop and Full images, and the Pi is linked to a Connect account. Because you do not have to manually find the Pi’s local IP address, it is a practical first choice for users who want to reach a supported Pi from outside their home network.

Screen sharing requires Raspberry Pi OS Bookworm or later. The Connect Lite variant for Raspberry Pi OS Lite provides remote shell access only, not screen sharing. If you need a graphical desktop, install a supported Desktop or Full setup rather than assuming Lite’s shell feature includes a desktop.

Raspberry Pi says Connect traffic is encrypted using DTLS between the Raspberry Pi and the user’s browser. The company also says Cure53 assessed the web application and infrastructure, Raspberry Pi ID, and Connect client versions 2.2–2.3 in January 2025. Those statements describe Connect and the named assessment scope; they are not a guarantee that remote access is risk-free.

2. VNC with wayvnc: conventional desktop sharing

Raspberry Pi OS includes wayvnc, but you must enable the VNC server before a client can connect. The usual local-network flow is to run a VNC client on the computer or mobile device you are using and connect to the Pi using its local IP address.

VNC is a sensible option when you specifically want a familiar client/server desktop-sharing arrangement on a network where the Pi is reachable. Internet access is a separate configuration question: the Raspberry Pi guide notes that it entails additional network or service configuration. VNC should not be treated as an automatic secure internet-access service.

3. NoMachine: documented third-party support for Pi ARM

NoMachine’s Raspberry Pi guide directs users to select an installation package that matches the Pi’s architecture, and its supported-systems page lists Raspberry Pi ARMv7 and ARMv8. To connect, use the Pi’s IP address or Machine ID and the credentials for the target system account.

This is a candidate if you prefer a separate remote-desktop application rather than Raspberry Pi’s integrated service or the VNC client/server approach. The available documentation establishes setup and platform support, not comparative speed or ease of use.

4. AnyDesk: check Wayland and session direction first

AnyDesk lists Raspberry Pi arm64 downloads, but a listed download alone does not establish that every Pi desktop configuration can accept incoming control. According to AnyDesk’s support documentation, Wayland supports outgoing sessions only; incoming sessions require Xorg.

  • PERFECT FOR MEDIA CENTER & KODI SETUPS Ideal for home theater Raspberry Pi builds running LibreELEC, Kodi, or Raspberry Pi OS. Easily navigate menus, adjust volume, and control playback without needing a keyboard or mouse.
  • SAFE SHUTDOWN FUNCTION SUPPORT Works with Argon’s safe shutdown scripts and system controls, helping prevent file corruption and allowing clean shutdown of your Raspberry Pi from the remote.

If your aim is to control the Pi from another computer, that distinction may make AnyDesk unsuitable on a Wayland desktop. Check which display server the Pi is using and confirm that it matches the direction of the session you need before choosing it.

The general client page does not establish compatibility with every Raspberry Pi OS and processor-architecture combination. Treat RustDesk as an option to verify for your exact Pi and OS, not as a guaranteed plug-and-play Raspberry Pi desktop.

RustDesk client documentation

Which option should you use?

  • Want a graphical desktop on a supported Raspberry Pi OS release and minimal IP-address setup? Start with Raspberry Pi Connect.
  • Want a conventional VNC client/server connection on your local network? Enable wayvnc and connect to the Pi’s local IP address.
  • Want a separate vendor remote-desktop app? Review NoMachine’s architecture-specific setup, or use AnyDesk only if its display-server and session-direction requirements fit.
  • Want to use RustDesk? Confirm a compatible client for your Pi and OS before building your connection around it.
  • Need commands rather than a graphical session? Use SSH as the terminal-access route described in Raspberry Pi’s remote-access guidance; it is not one of these desktop options.

These choices are based on documented features and compatibility, not measured performance rankings. For any method, understand how the connection is routed and secured before making a Pi accessible beyond a trusted network.
