Network Egress vs. Ingress: Cloud Firewall Alternatives and How to Choose

Egress means traffic leaving a defined network boundary; ingress means traffic entering it. Compare cloud firewall alternatives and learn when NAT, DNS filtering, private endpoints, proxies, or shared inspection fit.

Egress is traffic leaving a defined boundary; ingress is traffic entering it. NAT can provide a route or translate addresses, but it does not by itself decide which traffic is allowed. To control outbound cloud traffic, choose a policy layer—such as network rules, DNS filtering, application-aware inspection, or an explicit proxy—and route the traffic through it.

What do ingress and egress mean?

The terms describe direction relative to a boundary, so name that boundary before discussing a rule. For a VM, ingress is traffic arriving at the VM and egress is traffic leaving it. For a VPC or subnet, the same terms refer to traffic entering or leaving that network boundary. Traffic can therefore be egress from one workload and ingress to another.

Cloud firewall rules commonly specify one direction rather than implicitly covering both. Google Cloud defines ingress as incoming connections from sources to Google Cloud targets and egress as outbound connections from a target resource to a destination. Its firewall policy rules have priorities, so a higher-priority decision can take precedence over a lower-priority one; verify the effective rule set for the target and direction. Why NAT is not an egress security policy

NAT (network address translation) changes address information as traffic passes through a network path. A NAT gateway can enable outbound connectivity or translate private source addresses; that role is different from deciding whether a destination, protocol, or application is permitted. A firewall rule or inspection control supplies that policy. You can place NAT and filtering in the same route, but one does not imply the other.

Azure’s Well-Architected networking guidance cautions that NAT gateways and load balancers are intended for connectivity or traffic distribution, not necessarily security. The practical test is simple: identify the component that enforces the allow-or-deny decision, not just the component that gives a workload a path to the internet. Microsoft Azure Well-Architected networking guidance.

What can I use instead of a cloud network firewall for egress?

There is no single replacement if the requirement includes several different kinds of control. A DNS filter can restrict domain lookups, while a network firewall applies network traffic rules and may inspect traffic. Private service endpoints keep selected trusted cloud-service traffic off the public egress path. An explicit proxy gives clients proxy semantics and can enforce proxy-level policy. These controls address different layers, and some architectures combine them. AWS describes these patterns in its egress-pattern guidance and internet connectivity guidance.

Control Policy layer and useful fit What to account for
Network firewall or network rules IP, protocol, and port rules; inspection depth depends on the selected service and configuration. Decide which flows must traverse the control, where it sits in the route, and who owns shared rules and exceptions. A firewall does not automatically provide domain-level policy.
DNS filtering Domain-resolution policy can block resolution of disallowed domains. It governs DNS lookups, not every possible connection path. Do not treat a DNS allowlist alone as equivalent to network enforcement or traffic inspection.
Private service endpoints Keep traffic to selected cloud services on a private service path rather than the public internet egress path. They address selected services, not arbitrary internet destinations; define which services are covered and how their access is governed.
Explicit forward proxy Proxy-aware clients send requests to a proxy for proxy-level policy. Plan client configuration and proxy availability. AWS guidance reviewed on 2026-10-04 described AWS Network Firewall Proxy as a managed explicit forward-proxy option in preview; check current status and regional availability before relying on it.
Third-party firewall appliance/service Can add a specialist inspection or policy function in a routed path; AWS documents Gateway Load Balancer with third-party firewalls as an option. Include the appliance/service path, capacity, redundancy, operational ownership, and associated processing costs in the design.

The table distinguishes control functions, not interchangeable products. For example, DNS filtering can complement a network firewall, and a private endpoint can remove a particular service flow from the public route without controlling unrelated destinations.

How do I control outbound traffic from cloud workloads?

  1. Set the boundary and scope. List whether the policy applies to a VM, subnet, workload VPC, or shared network. Separate internet-bound traffic from cloud-service access and inter-network (east-west) flows; decide whether ingress is also in scope.
  2. Write the policy in the layer that can enforce it. Specify required destinations, protocols, ports, and, where needed, domains or application-aware inspection. Use DNS filtering for domain-resolution controls, network rules for network traffic, and proxy policy when clients can be configured to use an explicit proxy.
  3. Map routes before deploying controls. Confirm which flows reach the firewall or proxy, which trusted service flows use private endpoints, and whether any path can bypass enforcement. NAT may still be needed for address translation or connectivity, but keep its routing function separate from the allow/deny policy.
  4. Choose local or shared enforcement. A local control can keep traffic near the workload; a shared inspection network can centralize policy and operations. Compare the trade-offs below against actual routes, traffic volume, and team responsibilities.
  5. Check capacity, availability, and observability. Model expected concurrent connections and traffic volume; plan redundancy and monitoring for the egress path. Confirm that logs support rule review and incident response, and assign owners for allowlists and exceptions.
  6. Validate each address family and destination type. Test IPv4 and IPv6 behavior separately, along with internet destinations, cloud services, and any east-west paths in scope. Provider designs differ, so do not assume an IPv4 route or NAT pattern applies to IPv6.

For Azure, Microsoft recommends a firewall for centrally governed internet egress: “For egress, send all internet-bound traffic through a single firewall that provides enhanced oversight, governance, and control of traffic.” That is an architecture recommendation for centralized oversight, not a claim that every workload has the same routing or policy requirements. Azure NSGs and user-defined routes can also form parts of the control architecture. Microsoft Azure Well-Architected networking guidance.

Centralized or decentralized egress: which architecture fits?

A centralized design sends traffic from multiple workload networks through a shared inspection point; a decentralized design keeps egress controls closer to individual workload networks. AWS presents these as a genuine IPv4 architecture trade-off rather than a universally superior pattern. AWS Networking Best Practices.

Consideration Centralized egress Decentralized egress
Policy and ownership One shared point can support common inspection and shared rule governance. Workload-specific exceptions still need clear ownership. Teams can manage controls close to workloads, but rules and operations are distributed across VPCs.
Routing and latency Traffic takes a transit path to the inspection network and then to the internet, adding routing complexity and potentially extra hops. Can reduce transit hops by keeping egress local to the workload VPC.
Failure scope A shared path can affect multiple workloads if it fails; build redundancy and monitor the common service path. A failure can be bounded to a workload VPC, although each VPC’s components and operations must be managed.
Cost and scale Account for firewall and NAT processing, transit or Cloud WAN processing, and data transfer on the actual paths. Centralization is not automatically cheaper. Account for per-VPC components and data transfer. Compare the cost using expected volumes rather than assuming local egress is cheaper.
Address family In the AWS IPv4 pattern, workload traffic traverses Transit Gateway or Cloud WAN to a shared egress VPC, then inspection, NAT, and an internet gateway. The cited AWS guide says its IPv6 egress remains per-VPC through an egress-only internet gateway and describes no managed NAT66 alternative. Local egress aligns with the AWS guide’s described per-VPC IPv6 pattern. Confirm current provider behavior before applying this design elsewhere.

In AWS’s described centralized IPv4 route, inspection occurs before NAT. That preserves the original VPC source address at inspection, which AWS identifies as useful for per-VPC policy and forensic analysis. The guide also favors regional shared egress over cross-region routing where the latter’s cost and latency are unattractive, and recommends redundant inspection to avoid a single point of failure. These are provider-specific design notes, not universal requirements.

What can change performance, reliability, and cost?

An egress architecture affects both the policy decision and the path carrying traffic. Estimate against the traffic flows and volumes you actually expect rather than comparing service labels alone.

  • Capacity: Azure calls out SNAT port exhaustion as a risk to assess for outbound connections. Examine connection patterns and the selected service’s limits alongside expected scale.
  • Latency and throughput: Transit hops, inspection work, rule configuration, and TLS inspection can affect performance. Measure the path and inspection configuration that will actually run.
  • Reliability: A shared firewall or proxy can become a broad dependency. Redundant components, route behavior during failure, and monitoring should be part of the design.
  • Cost: Include firewall and NAT processing, transit or Cloud WAN processing, endpoint charges, and data transfer where applicable. High egress volume can incur data-transfer charges, and a shared topology is not automatically less expensive.
  • Governance: Decide who approves destination allowlists and exceptions, maintains shared rules, reviews logs, and leads incident response. A centralized route does not resolve ambiguity in ownership by itself.

Azure’s mission-critical networking guidance discusses egress-path reliability and SNAT port exhaustion, while its Well-Architected networking guidance highlights the security role of a firewall and the distinction from NAT or load balancing. How do the major cloud providers describe these controls?

Google Cloud

Google Cloud firewall policy rules distinguish ingress from egress and apply to a direction. Rule priority affects which decision takes precedence, so check policy ordering as well as the target and direction when troubleshooting an unexpected allow or deny. The cited Google documentation establishes those rule concepts; it does not establish a like-for-like survey of proxy and centralized-egress alternatives.

Microsoft Azure

Azure’s guidance recommends routing internet-bound egress through a firewall when centralized oversight and control are required. Azure Firewall can serve that role, while network security groups and user-defined routes are other components of an architecture. NAT gateways and load balancers can carry or distribute traffic but are not necessarily security filters. For larger deployments, examine performance, egress-path reliability, and SNAT port exhaustion rather than treating connectivity as a solved problem.

Amazon Web Services

AWS’s described toolkit includes Route 53 Resolver DNS Firewall for domain-resolution filtering, AWS Network Firewall for network traffic inspection, VPC endpoints for selected AWS service traffic, and Gateway Load Balancer with third-party firewalls. Its guidance also describes an explicit forward-proxy option as being in preview; because preview status can change, verify current service status before adopting it. For centralized IPv4 egress, AWS documents routing through Transit Gateway or Cloud WAN to a shared egress VPC, then inspection, NAT, and an internet gateway.
