To save battery on an Android phone, first check which apps and features are actually using power, then adjust the ones that matter on your device. The five settings below are a targeted routine—not a universal checklist—and disabling them will not produce a predictable battery-life gain on every phone.
Find what is draining your battery before changing settings
On many phones, open Settings > Battery > Battery Usage and review the apps or features using the most power. The exact path and labels vary by Android version and manufacturer. Google’s Android battery guide, dated January 23, 2025, lists high screen brightness, background apps, unnecessary connectivity, and location services as possible causes of fast drain.

Use that screen to guide the changes below. If an item is not consuming meaningful power, turning it off may make little difference. Google does not provide a universal battery-saving percentage for disabling these settings.

Five settings to review and restrict when appropriate
1. Background activity for apps that rarely need it
For an app with high battery use that does not need to update constantly, review its battery or background-use controls in Android Settings. Labels and available controls differ by phone. Restricting background activity can reduce how often an app works when you are not using it, but it may also delay notifications, syncing, or refreshed content.

Do not apply this indiscriminately to messaging, email, navigation, or other apps where timely updates matter. Google Pixel Help recommends keeping Adaptive Battery and battery optimization on; its guidance says these features can reduce background activity from less-used apps. 2. Location access for apps that do not need it in the background
Review which apps have location permission and whether they need access all the time. Where your phone offers the choice, consider limiting an app to location access while in use rather than removing location access from the phone entirely. Keep access for navigation and other functions that genuinely depend on location.

Location power use depends on accuracy, how often an app requests updates, and how quickly it needs a response. Google’s Android location battery guidance explains that high-accuracy location can drain power significantly, while balanced or low-power options may meet many apps’ needs. A mapping app actively guiding you may need greater accuracy than an app that only needs an occasional approximate location.

3. Wi-Fi or Bluetooth when you are not using them
Turn off Wi-Fi or Bluetooth when you have no need for the connection and your Battery Usage screen suggests connectivity is contributing to drain. Android’s controls and connectivity behavior can vary by device, so check the battery details before making this a routine change. Turning a connection off can, of course, interrupt the devices or services that depend on it.

4. High screen brightness
If the screen is among your largest battery users, lower brightness to a comfortable level or use your phone’s automatic brightness control. A bright display can contribute to fast drain, but the best setting depends on ambient light and how you use the phone. Avoid making the screen too dim to use safely or comfortably.
5. Frequent or high-accuracy location updates where lower power is sufficient
For apps that need location but not precise, continuous updates, look for a lower-accuracy option or reduce how often the app requests location, if the app or device exposes that control. This is distinct from denying location permission: the aim is to match accuracy and update frequency to the task.

Android’s location documentation describes how accuracy, update frequency, and latency affect power use. Background location is also subject to Android platform limits; behavior can differ across versions and devices. The documentation’s “up to 10 times” figure concerns geofencing behavior on some devices in a developer/API context, not a typical battery-life improvement for phone owners.
What not to turn off by default
Do not disable Adaptive Battery or battery optimization as a general battery-saving measure. Google Pixel Help advises users to keep both on; turning off optimization for an app can permit more background activity and use more battery. This is Pixel-specific guidance, and settings on other manufacturers’ phones may use different names or work differently.

Battery Saver is another option, but its trade-offs are device-specific. On Pixel phones, Google says some apps may refresh only when opened, location services stop while the screen is off, low-priority notifications may be delayed, and the phone stops listening for “Ok Google.” Some Pixel Battery Saver steps require Android 11 or later. Check the Pixel Battery Saver guidance before relying on those details for your phone.
Make one change at a time and check the result
- Open your phone’s battery settings and inspect Battery Usage. Note the apps or features near the top.
- Choose one high-use item whose background updates, location access, connectivity, or screen behavior you can reasonably limit.
- Change only that setting, then use the phone normally and watch for delayed alerts, missing updates, or location features that no longer work as expected.
- Check Battery Usage again. Keep the change if it helps without disrupting something you rely on; otherwise restore the previous setting.
Android versions and manufacturers expose different controls, so the exact menu path and effect will vary. A setting that matters on one phone may have little impact on another, depending on installed apps, usage, and which services are active.
