GPTZero, Pangram, Copyleaks, Turnitin and Originality.ai are five AI detectors with evidence or documented product information worth comparing—but the available tests do not establish a universal “best” detector. A 2026 peer-reviewed study compared the first four on 160 synthetic academic papers; a separate 2025 benchmark published by GPTZero compared several products on text from OpenAI’s o1 reasoning model. Those tests have different samples and methods, so their scores are not interchangeable.

Every detector result is a prediction about text, not proof of who wrote it. The right choice depends on the writing you need to assess, the tool’s language and format limits, and how cautiously you will handle a possible false positive.

What does the comparison actually establish?

The 2026 peer-reviewed study, “Who wrote this? Evaluating the reliability of AI detection tools in higher education,” compared GPTZero, Pangram, Copyleaks and Turnitin on 160 synthetic academic papers with known authorship categories. The set included human-written papers, AI-written papers, papers with AI-inserted passages, and humanised AI text. Its findings describe uneven, context-dependent performance; they do not establish which service works best for every subject, genre, language or real-world submission.

The numerical comparison below comes from a different source: GPTZero’s own benchmark, published January 30, 2025, for identifying text from the ChatGPT o1 reasoning model. It is a vendor-run test, not an independent, current guarantee. The 2026 study and 2025 benchmark should not be combined into a single leaderboard.

Detector Evidence available here What can be concluded
GPTZero Included in the 2026 study; also assessed in GPTZero’s 2025 o1 benchmark. There is both a peer-reviewed comparison on synthetic academic papers and a vendor-reported result on one specified model.
Pangram Included in the 2026 study; Pangram Labs also appears in GPTZero’s 2025 benchmark. It has evidence from those two distinct tests, but neither establishes universal performance.
Copyleaks Included in the 2026 study and GPTZero’s 2025 benchmark. Its cited numerical figures are from GPTZero’s vendor benchmark, not an independent general-purpose accuracy test.
Turnitin Included in the 2026 study; official documentation describes its AI Writing Report and limits. Its documented workflow is particularly specific about qualifying prose, file length and supported languages.
Originality.ai Originality Lite and Originality Turbo appear in GPTZero’s 2025 benchmark. No current official product listing for Originality.ai in the 2026 four-tool study was published. The cited figures apply to those benchmark variants and conditions, not all writing or product versions.

The table is a map of the available evidence, not a rank order. The 2026 study reports that performance can become outdated as language models change. A separate 2026 research review likewise describes inconsistent results and warns that false positives and false negatives make detectors unsuitable as sole evidence in academic misconduct cases.

How did the detectors perform in GPTZero’s 2025 benchmark?

These are GPTZero’s reported results for identifying ChatGPT o1 reasoning-model text in its January 30, 2025 benchmark. Accuracy is shown alongside recall and false-positive rate: a detector that catches more AI text can also incorrectly flag more human writing. The figures are not current universal guarantees and cannot be compared directly with the 2026 synthetic-paper study.

Tool in GPTZero’s benchmark Accuracy Recall False-positive rate
GPTZero 98.6% 97.2% 0.0%
Pangram Labs 93.6% 92.4% 5.2%
Copyleaks 89.1% 83.3% 5.0%
Originality Lite 80.2% 91.6% 31.0%
Originality Turbo 80.0% 97.2% 37.0%

In this benchmark, “recall” is the share of AI text the tool identified; false-positive rate is the share of human text it incorrectly flagged. The high recall reported for Originality Turbo came with a substantially higher false-positive rate than the other listed results. That trade-off is one reason accuracy alone—or a single score from a different test—is not enough to choose a detector.

What to know about each AI detector

GPTZero

GPTZero describes its output as probabilistic and predictive, not an exact match against a database like a plagiarism check. Its support article characterises “highly confident” results as having a claimed error rate under 2%, “moderately confident” results as around 10%, and “low confidence” results as 14% or higher. These are GPTZero’s descriptions of its confidence levels, not independent validation across every kind of text.

GPTZero’s own guidance says not to use a detection result as the only proof for academic punishment or discipline. Its 98.6% accuracy, 97.2% recall and 0.0% false-positive rate are specifically its figures from the 2025 GPTZero benchmark on ChatGPT o1 reasoning-model text.

Pangram

Pangram was one of the four products in the 2026 peer-reviewed comparison of 160 synthetic academic papers. Pangram Labs also reported 93.6% accuracy, 92.4% recall and a 5.2% false-positive rate in GPTZero’s 2025 o1 benchmark. Treat those numbers as a result from GPTZero’s particular vendor-run test, not a general performance guarantee.

Copyleaks

Copyleaks was included in the 2026 peer-reviewed study and in GPTZero’s 2025 benchmark. In the latter, GPTZero reported 89.1% accuracy, 83.3% recall and a 5.0% false-positive rate for Copyleaks on the o1 test. The available evidence does not establish that this result transfers to other models, languages or text types.

Turnitin

Turnitin’s AI writing percentage is separate from its similarity score. It represents the share of qualifying prose that its model identifies as likely AI-generated or AI-generated and modified by an AI paraphraser or bypasser. Turnitin’s documentation says its English model includes AI-paraphrasing and bypasser detection; its Spanish and Japanese models do not currently include those functions.

Turnitin’s report requires at least 300 words of prose and accepts up to 30,000 words. Its guide lists English, Spanish, Japanese and Arabic as supported languages. It does not display exact scores or highlights for results from 1% to below 20%, citing the possibility of false positives. These are Turnitin’s documented product rules, not independent accuracy findings.

Turnitin also says it has observed more false positives in the first or last few sentences, which may be generic introductions or conclusions, and that it changed its detection logic to reduce those errors. The 2026 peer-reviewed study included Turnitin, but its synthetic academic-paper sample does not resolve how the service performs across all kinds of writing.

Originality.ai: Lite and Turbo benchmark results

GPTZero’s 2025 o1 benchmark reported Originality Lite at 80.2% accuracy, 91.6% recall and a 31.0% false-positive rate; it reported Originality Turbo at 80.0% accuracy, 97.2% recall and a 37.0% false-positive rate. These are results for the named benchmark variants in GPTZero’s test. The evidence here does not establish performance for other versions, text types or languages, or provide a comparable independent result for Originality.ai in the 2026 study.

Why can an AI detector flag human writing or miss AI writing?

A false positive is human writing classified as AI-generated; a false negative is AI-generated writing that a detector does not identify. Both matter: false positives can cast unwarranted suspicion, while false negatives can create unjustified confidence that text is human-written. Published results vary with the tool, sample, model and test conditions.

  • Mixed authorship: A passage may combine a person’s writing with AI-generated or AI-edited sections. The 2026 study included hybrid papers with AI-inserted passages and humanised AI text, but its synthetic academic corpus is not a comprehensive test of everyday writing.
  • Short or unusual formats: Short text, non-prose, translated writing and unusual formats may not be well covered by a detector’s features or validation. Turnitin’s stated minimum length, for example, is 300 words of qualifying prose.
  • Edited text and changing models: Paraphrasing, human editing and changes in language models can affect what a detector recognises. The 2026 study notes that performance may become outdated as models evolve.
  • Boundary sentences: Turnitin reports more false positives in some opening or closing sentences, which may use generic phrasing. A highlighted sentence should be interpreted in context, not treated as an authorship finding by itself.

A 2026 report by Le Monde discusses text length, unusual formats, translation and humanisation as issues for detection. That reporting is useful context, not a controlled head-to-head measurement.

How should you choose and use a detector?

  1. Match the tool to the actual writing. Check supported languages, minimum length, prose requirements and whether the text is mixed, translated or an unusual format. Do not assume a product has been validated for code, poetry, tables or short passages unless its documentation says so.
  2. Read the test behind any accuracy claim. Look for who ran it, the sample size and type, the AI model, language, text length, and how accuracy and false positives were defined. Vendor benchmarks should be labelled as vendor benchmarks.
  3. Consider both kinds of error. Review false-positive rate as well as recall. A high detection rate can be less useful if it also flags many human passages.
  4. Treat results as a prompt for review, not a verdict. A score is one uncertain signal. Check the surrounding work and applicable policy before drawing conclusions.
  5. For academic or workplace concerns, preserve context. Keep drafts, notes, source records and version history; speak with the author; and follow the relevant institutional or workplace policy. Do not make a consequential accusation or disciplinary decision from a detector score alone.
