4 VPN Myths to Rethink: What a VPN Does—and Doesn’t Do

A VPN changes your traffic route and can reduce visibility for some observers. Learn what it cannot do—and why a provider’s privacy practices still matter.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A consumer VPN encrypts traffic between your device and a VPN server, changing the route your internet traffic takes. That can reduce what your internet provider or someone monitoring the local network can see, but it does not make you anonymous or protect you from every online threat. It also puts the VPN provider in the middle of your connection, so privacy depends in part on what that company collects and how it handles the data.

Myth 1: A VPN makes you completely anonymous

A VPN can hide your device’s IP address from websites you visit and limit what your internet service provider or local network observer can see about your traffic. It does not erase other ways you can be identified. If you sign in to an account, share identifying details, or behave in ways a service can associate with you, a VPN does not make those actions anonymous.

The Federal Trade Commission puts the distinction plainly: “A VPN app will typically obscure the content of your traffic from your internet service provider or public Wi-Fi provider, but it doesn’t render you anonymous.” Read the FTC’s guidance on VPN apps for more on what a VPN can and cannot conceal.

Myth 2: A VPN protects against every hacker and online threat

A VPN’s main job is to protect traffic as it travels between your device and the VPN server, and to change which parties along that network path can see it. It is not a complete security package. The cited government and FTC guidance does not establish that a VPN can prevent malware, phishing, account compromise, or other threats that target your device, credentials, or behavior.

Think of a VPN as one limited privacy and security measure, not a replacement for other safeguards. For broader internet-safety context, see the U.S. Government Publishing Office’s 2023 guide to staying safe on the internet.

Myth 3: Public Wi-Fi is dangerous unless you use a VPN

Public Wi-Fi is not automatically unsafe. The FTC says it is usually safe because encryption is now widespread. The Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) also notes that HTTPS is common, making a VPN less necessary for some people on public networks than it used to be. A VPN may still help protect unencrypted traffic from surveillance on a public network, but blanket fear and blanket reassurance both miss the point: the risk depends on the network and what you are doing.

Myth 4: Using a VPN means you no longer have to trust a company with your traffic

A VPN changes who sits between your device and the wider internet. It may reduce visibility for your internet provider or a local network observer, but the VPN operator becomes an intermediary that you must assess. The government guide notes that traffic remains visible to the VPN operator; using a VPN is therefore a transfer of trust, not the end of trust.

Read the provider’s privacy policy to see what information it says it collects, and examine its logging practices and security claims. EFF warns that a company might log data if its privacy policy does not specifically rule that out. A “no logs” statement alone is not proof of how a service operates; the cited sources do not verify the practices of any particular provider.

Why these myths persist

People often recognize some real VPN functions but overstate what follows from them. In a 2025 survey of Tom’s Guide readers, 56% said VPNs encrypt internet traffic and 65% said they change IP addresses, while 29% thought VPNs make users totally anonymous. These are responses from that publisher’s surveyed readers, not estimates for the general population. The figures illustrate why it helps to separate a VPN’s specific network effects from broader claims about privacy or security. Tom’s Guide’s May 17, 2025 survey article reports the results.

What to check if you are considering a VPN

  • Read the privacy policy and identify what data the provider says it collects.
  • Review the provider’s logging practices rather than relying on a marketing phrase by itself.
  • Check what security claims are made and whether the available evidence supports them.
  • Match the service to your actual need: a VPN changes the network path and protects traffic in transit, but does not promise anonymity or all-purpose protection.
