In a contributor-reported Grafana benchmark, a time-comparison frame consumed 76.4 MB of heap before a fix and 22.8 MB after it. The reported cause was not extra real samples: gap filling added synthetic null rows because it checked an earlier-period frame against the current time range before that frame was shifted into place.
How the comparison pipeline created extra rows
Grafana’s panel time comparison overlays data from an earlier period on the current period. In the code path described by Grafana contributor Sachin Indwar, query results became data frames, the frames were prepared and gap-filled, comparison frames were shifted forward, and the result was rendered. The order of gap filling and shifting mattered.

- At gap-filling time, the comparison frame still represented the earlier time window.
- The preparation step evaluated that frame against the current time range. The frame’s time offset was therefore interpreted as a gap.
- Gap filling inserted null rows for that apparent gap.
- The comparison frame was then shifted forward, carrying those synthetic rows beyond the visible range.
This is how valid processing can inflate a frame: gap filling can do its intended job for the range it is given, yet create unnecessary rows if that range does not match the frame’s effective time window. Indwar described the debugging question as, “where did the extra points come from?”

What changed in the fix
The reported correction uses the comparison frame’s effective time range when gap filling. Indwar says genuine gaps within the frame continue to be filled, while non-comparison frames are unchanged. The reported change addresses this specific time-range mismatch; it is not evidence that every Grafana memory spike has the same cause.

What the benchmark measured
Indwar’s 2026 case study used 500 series, a six-hour window, a 20-second interval, and a 24-hour comparison offset. The figures below are his reported results for that setup, not independent replication or a prediction for other dashboards.
| Measurement | Before fix | After fix |
|---|---|---|
| Comparison-frame points | 3,240,500 | 1,081,000 |
| Comparison-frame heap | 76.4 MB | 22.8 MB |
| 12-panel dashboard heap | 822.5 MB | 225.0 MB |
For context, Indwar reports roughly 540,000 points in a single-period panel under the same benchmark conditions. In a browser harness, the reproduced panel’s measured memory fell from 144.2 MB to 84.4 MB. That browser-harness result is a separate measurement from the comparison-frame and 12-panel dashboard heap figures; the values describe different scopes and should not be combined.

Indwar says the investigation used a browser harness and heap snapshot. These are measurements from his contributor-authored case study, not a guarantee of savings on a different dashboard, browser, or Grafana deployment. His practical takeaway: “When debugging performance, follow the data — not just the allocations.”
