4 Quick Ways to Flush the DNS Cache in Windows 11

Clear Windows 11’s local DNS cache using Command Prompt, Run, Windows Terminal, or PowerShell—and learn what to check if name resolution still fails.

To flush the DNS cache in Windows 11, run ipconfig /flushdns or, in PowerShell, Clear-DnsClientCache. The four routes below are different ways to open or use those two built-in commands—not four different cache-clearing operations.

Choose one of these four quick routes

1. Use Command Prompt

  1. Open Command Prompt.
  2. Type ipconfig /flushdns and press Enter.

Microsoft lists Windows 11 as supported and says the command flushes and resets the DNS client resolver cache. Microsoft’s ipconfig documentation

2. Run the command from the Run dialog

  1. Press Windows+R.
  2. Enter cmd /c ipconfig /flushdns, then select OK.

This launches Command Prompt, runs the same ipconfig command, and closes the command window when it finishes.

3. Use Windows Terminal

  1. Open Windows Terminal and choose a Command Prompt profile.
  2. Enter ipconfig /flushdns and press Enter.

This is the same documented command as the Command Prompt route; Terminal is simply another place to run it.

4. Use PowerShell

  1. Open PowerShell.
  2. Enter Clear-DnsClientCache and press Enter.

Microsoft documents this cmdlet as clearing the DNS client cache and says it is equivalent to ipconfig /flushdns. Microsoft’s Clear-DnsClientCache documentation

What flushing the DNS cache does

Windows keeps DNS name-resolution information in a cache on the local computer. Flushing clears and resets that local cache, including negative entries and other dynamically added entries. It can help when Windows is relying on stale or negative cached information. It does not change which DNS server your computer uses, and it cannot by itself fix a broader network or DNS-server problem. Microsoft’s ipconfig documentation

If the problem continues

  1. Check the computer’s IP configuration and confirm that its listed DNS servers are the ones you expect.
  2. Check whether the computer can reach a configured DNS server. Microsoft notes that failure to ping the server’s IP can point to a connectivity problem, but a firewall may block ICMP, so a failed ping is not conclusive.
  3. Use nslookup to test name resolution against the configured DNS server without relying on the Windows DNS client cache.

If those checks do not resolve the issue, the cause may be upstream or network-related rather than stale local cache data. Microsoft’s DNS client troubleshooting guidance

Do you need administrator access?

Microsoft’s command documentation does not state that an elevated window is always required. If Windows rejects the command on your particular device, try again in an elevated Command Prompt, Windows Terminal, or PowerShell window; that is a troubleshooting step, not a universal prerequisite.
