4 Laptop Brands to Compare With Lenovo for Reliability

Apple, Dell, HP, and ASUS are worth comparing with Lenovo, but public 2026 survey evidence does not prove they are more reliable. Learn how to judge the exact laptop model, warranty, support, and repairability.

Apple, Dell, HP, and ASUS are four sensible laptop brands to compare with Lenovo—but the available 2026 survey evidence does not establish them as the four most reliable brands or show that they outperform Lenovo. Reliability depends on the specific model and configuration as well as the maker. Use the shortlist to narrow your options, then check model-level evidence, serviceability, warranty terms, and fit for your work.

What the reliability evidence can—and cannot—tell you

Consumer Reports’ 2026 laptop reliability article estimates predicted reliability from member reports and combines it with model ratings. Its survey data cover 75,923 portable computers bought new between 2019 and 2025. Consumer Reports reports that 16% of surveyed laptops broke or stopped working as they should within three years; nearly 6 in 10 broken laptops were taken in for repair. These are survey findings, not results from a controlled durability test, and they do not predict what will happen to any individual laptop.

Consumer Reports says its predicted brand reliability marks estimate how often problems are likely to occur by the end of the third year of ownership. Its accessible 2026 coverage does not provide a complete, readable brand ranking, so it cannot support a claim that Apple, Dell, HP, or ASUS ranks above Lenovo. Consumer Reports senior home and tech writer Nicholas De Leon describes laptops generally as “pretty reliable compared with many of the products on which Consumer Reports collects data”; that is not a guarantee about every model.

Which? reports an online survey conducted in February and March 2026 among 15,755 technology-product owners, including 6,971 laptop owners. Its detailed brand results are reserved for members, so those figures do not establish a public ranking either. Treat the four names below as a practical comparison shortlist, not a reliability league table.

Four brands worth comparing with Lenovo

Apple: consider the operating system and workload

Apple is a logical alternative if macOS suits your apps and workflow. Consumer Reports distinguishes the MacBook Air as a general-purpose portable option and the MacBook Pro as intended for more demanding work in its laptop buying guide. Its current ratings page lists the Apple MacBook Air (2026), making it a concrete model to investigate—not evidence that Apple laptops as a category are more reliable than Lenovo’s.

Before choosing, confirm that the software and accessories you rely on work with macOS, and compare the exact Air or Pro configuration with a Lenovo model that can handle the same workload.

Dell: compare the exact model and service terms

Dell appears among the brands in Consumer Reports’ laptop ratings ecosystem, but the public material cited here does not establish a 2026 reliability rank for Dell relative to Lenovo. Compare the specific Dell laptop you can buy with a Lenovo alternative at a similar price and configuration. Check the warranty scope, technical-support options, and availability of service where you live rather than assuming these are uniform across the brand.

HP: match configuration to the work

HP is another candidate in Consumer Reports’ ratings ecosystem, not a proven reliability winner over Lenovo in the public 2026 evidence. Look at the model’s processor, memory, storage, display, and intended workload. An entry-level everyday machine and a higher-spec laptop are not meaningful comparisons simply because they share a logo or similar names.

ASUS: judge the individual laptop, not the label

ASUS also belongs on a shortlist for model-by-model comparison, but the sources cited here do not publish a complete 2026 brand ranking that shows it beating Lenovo. Compare the exact model’s configuration, measured battery results, support terms, and repair options with the Lenovo you are considering.

  • Warranty and support: Read the actual coverage and support channel for the model, seller, and country where you will buy it. Warranty terms and local service access can vary.
  • Price: Compare like-for-like configurations and include any differences in warranty coverage; a premium laptop should not be treated as a direct comparison with a much less capable entry-level one.

Why repairability matters alongside reliability

A laptop that is straightforward to repair may be easier to keep in service if a part fails. That does not make it less likely to fail in the first place, and repairability is a model-level consideration rather than a reliable shortcut to a brand ranking. iFixit publishes laptop teardown assessments and repairability observations in its Laptop Repairability Scores; its rubric can change over time, so numerical scores should be read in the context of the applicable rubric.

Which? notes that battery replacement is difficult on many laptops and identifies Framework laptops as having easily replaceable batteries. iFixit describes the Framework Laptop 12 as modular, with standard-part upgrades and repairs, repair instructions, and replacement parts available. These are useful examples of serviceability, not proof of better survey reliability than Lenovo or any of the four shortlisted brands.

Warranty and ownership details to verify before buying

Consumer Reports’ 2026 survey found that 22% of laptops purchased between 2019 and 2025 had an extended warranty or service contract. That figure describes survey respondents’ purchases; it is not a recommendation to buy an extended plan. The same article reports that 56% of surveyed members prioritized reliability above performance or affordability. Those preferences underline why it is worth checking coverage before purchase, but they do not identify a universally best brand.

  • Read the standard warranty’s duration, covered failures, exclusions, and repair process for the exact model and market.
  • Check whether service is available locally and whether repairs require shipping the laptop away.
  • Look for documentation, replacement parts, and practical access to commonly serviced components such as the battery.
  • Consider an extended service contract only after comparing its terms, price, and exclusions with the protection already included.

Which brand should you shortlist?

Start with the operating system and workload, then compare a specific Apple, Dell, HP, or ASUS model with a Lenovo machine at a similar configuration and price. Give weight to current model-level ratings, clearly described owner evidence, repair options, and the support you can actually access. The public survey material available for 2026 supports comparing these brands; it does not support declaring any of them categorically more reliable than Lenovo.
