For most monitors, the best first choice is a clean, soft microfiber cloth, used dry and with light pressure. If dusting does not remove a mark, use a damp cloth only if your exact monitor’s instructions permit it—and apply the approved liquid to the cloth, never directly to the screen. A dedicated cleaner is not a universal upgrade: screen coatings and manufacturer guidance differ.
What should you buy to clean a monitor?
Choose a clean, soft microfiber screen-cleaning cloth. ASUS, Samsung and LG all recommend microfiber or a soft cloth for their monitor-cleaning guidance. A dry cloth is usually the sensible starting point for dust and light smudges; you do not need to buy a spray cleaner just to begin routine cleaning.

If you need to dampen the cloth, first check the manual or support instructions for your exact model. ASUS and Samsung permit purified or distilled water in the methods they describe. Samsung notes that minerals in other water can leave residue. A screen-cleaning solution or kit is a conditional option, not a safe choice for every display: use one only when the monitor’s own instructions allow that product type.

How do you clean a monitor screen safely?
- Check the model’s instructions. Look up the manual or official support page for the exact monitor, especially if it has an OLED panel or a coated screen. Manufacturer directions differ on which liquids are allowed.
- Power down and disconnect as directed. ASUS, Samsung and LG include power-disconnection guidance in their instructions. Follow the directions for your model.
- Remove dust first. Use a clean, soft microfiber cloth with gentle pressure. Let the cloth glide; do not scrub or press hard.
- For stubborn marks, dampen the cloth only if permitted. Use only a liquid allowed by the monitor’s instructions, in a very small amount. ASUS and Samsung describe purified or distilled water for damp-cloth cleaning where their instructions apply.
- Wipe the screen without spraying it. Keep liquid off the panel directly and away from openings, where it could seep into the display.
- Let the screen dry fully. Samsung directs users to wait until the screen is completely dry before reconnecting power.
What cleaners and materials should you avoid?
Do not assume a liquid is safe just because it is sold for screens or commonly used on other electronics. ASUS warns against alcohol- and ammonia-based cleaners; Samsung Canada advises against alcohol, solvents and ammonia; LG’s U.S. monitor guidance warns against alcohol and various detergents. Those directions are not identical across manufacturers, so the exact model’s instructions take precedence.

Other manufacturers illustrate why a universal cleaner recommendation is unreliable. BenQ’s U.S. FAQ describes using a soft cloth with IPA or water, while warning against ethanol, rubbing alcohol and bleach. Philips’ OLED manual lists acetone-free LCD/LED screen cleaner among the options allowed by that manual. These are product-specific instructions, not permission to use those liquids on any monitor.
- Do not spray the screen: ASUS, Samsung and HP warn against direct application of liquid.
- Avoid paper towels and rough materials: ASUS warns against paper products, and Samsung warns that paper towels or cloth towels may scratch or damage the screen.
- Do not use alcohol, ammonia, solvents or detergents by default: manufacturer guidance varies, and some explicitly prohibits them.
- Do not use abrasive pressure: a soft cloth and a light touch reduce the risk of damaging the display or its coating.
Can you use isopropyl alcohol to clean a monitor screen?
Only if the instructions for your exact monitor explicitly allow it. Some manufacturers warn against alcohol, and BenQ’s U.S. FAQ distinguishes IPA from ethanol and rubbing alcohol in its product-specific guidance. That distinction does not make IPA universally safe. Check the monitor’s manual or official support page rather than relying on a general electronics-cleaning rule.

How do you clean fingerprints off a monitor screen?
Start with a clean, dry microfiber cloth and wipe gently. If the fingerprint remains, check whether your monitor permits damp cleaning; if it does, put a small amount of the approved liquid on the cloth and wipe lightly. Do not spray the panel or scrub the mark.

For ordinary dust and light marks, try the dry cloth before buying a solution.
