Four electronics categories deserve extra scrutiny before you buy: poorly specified USB cables, hard disk drives, generic smart-home devices, and older computers, laptops, or tablets. None is automatically a bad purchase. The sensible choice depends on specifications, support, condition, price, and what you need the device to do.
This list reflects the categories and arguments in Ian Garland’s October 3, 2026, BGR article; its broad warnings are best treated as prompts for checking a specific product, not universal buying rules.

1. USB cables with unclear specifications
A low price alone does not tell you whether a USB cable can deliver the charging power, data rate, or display support you need. The practical risk is buying a cable whose listing leaves those capabilities unclear—or whose capabilities do not match your devices.
What to check
- Power: Check the cable’s stated power-delivery capability and whether it matches the charger and device.
- Data rate: Look for a specific supported data rate rather than relying on a broad USB label.
- Display use: If you plan to connect a display, confirm that the cable and both connected devices support the required video features.
- Length and build: Choose a suitable length and consider construction as a durability preference, not proof of performance.
Garland’s article says USB 4.0 cables can reach up to 40 Gbps and support external displays, but it does not cite an official specification for those claims. That maximum should not be read as the performance of every cable or device. A USB4 cable is useful only when the devices and task can use its capabilities; for ordinary charging or slower data transfer, a less capable cable may be sufficient.

2. Hard disk drives when speed or portability matters
Hard disk drives (HDDs) use moving mechanical parts, while solid-state drives (SSDs) have no moving read/write head. An SSD may be a better fit when responsiveness, portability, or resistance to movement is important. But an HDD can still make sense when the priority is inexpensive capacity, as Garland’s article itself acknowledges.
Choose by use, not by a blanket rule
- Consider an HDD for large files that do not need frequent, fast access, provided its price and capacity suit your needs.
- Consider an SSD when faster everyday access or a drive that is easier to carry is more important than the lowest cost per unit of capacity.
- Be cautious with used drives if the files matter: a drive’s history and remaining useful life may be difficult to establish from a listing.
Do not treat an SSD as a substitute for a backup. Keep another copy of important files on a separate device or service, so a single drive failure does not leave you without access. Garland gives 10 years as an expected SSD lifespan depending on use, but names no study or manufacturer behind that figure; it is not a guaranteed service life or a reliable way to predict when an individual drive will fail.

3. Generic smart-home devices without clear support information
A low-cost or unfamiliar smart-home device is not necessarily unsafe, but the brand name alone cannot establish that it is secure or well supported. Garland’s article raises possible concerns about privacy, security, support, and component quality without citing a specific assessment or documented incident. Treat those concerns as questions to investigate for the particular product.

Questions to ask before connecting a device
- Does the manufacturer explain how long it will provide software or security updates?
- Is there clear information about what data the device collects, how it is used, and how to manage or delete it?
- Can you find security documentation, setup guidance, and a way to contact support?
- For a device that moves, heats, locks, or otherwise affects safety, are its controls and fail-safe behavior clearly explained?
A more recognizable brand is not a guarantee of privacy, security, or long-term support, just as an unfamiliar brand is not proof of a flaw. If the manufacturer does not provide enough information to assess a connected device, that uncertainty is a reason to pause—especially for a product with access to sensitive data or control over the home.

4. Older computers, laptops, and tablets that no longer meet the need
An older device can be a poor buy if it cannot run the software you need, has little usable life left, or costs too much relative to a supported alternative. Age by itself is not a sufficient test. Garland’s article suggests that most listed portable computers first released more than five years earlier may not be worth buying except for parts, but that is the author’s rule of thumb—not a model-specific support cutoff.
Check the specific device
- Software support: Verify that the operating system and applications you intend to use still support the device.
- Performance: Match its processor, memory, and storage to your actual tasks rather than assuming that a recent-looking listing is adequate.
- Condition: Inspect the screen, keyboard, ports, battery, charger, and any signs of damage; ask what is included and whether important functions have been tested.
- Compatibility: Check that the device can run the required software and connect to the peripherals you already use.
- Total cost: Include needed repairs, accessories, or upgrades when comparing its price with another option.
When older hardware can still be worthwhile
Used components such as CPUs may offer value when they are compatible with the rest of the system and priced accordingly. An upgradeable desktop can also remain useful if its parts meet the task and upgrades cost less than replacing the machine. The article recommends buying a new power supply, but gives no technical basis for applying that advice to every used desktop; assess the specific PSU’s condition, suitability, and compatibility instead.

Likewise, a 32-bit processor may rule out some modern software, but it is only one possible compatibility issue. Check the exact model and the support status of the operating system and applications before deciding.
