1. Some designs may put too much tracking force on records
The stylus needs enough force to stay in the record groove, but excessive tracking force can increase wear. Some inexpensive all-in-one players have fixed tonearms or provide little tracking-force adjustment, making their setup harder to tailor. Audio Advice explains the role of tracking force and tonearm setup in its turntable buying guide; What Hi-Fi? also cautions that many suitcase-style players do not allow tracking-force adjustment and that excessive force can damage records (budget record player guide).

One example should not be mistaken for a category-wide measurement: What Hi-Fi? reported a tracking weight over 7 g for a particular all-in-one player, compared with around 2 g as a more typical figure. The publication said that player’s unusually heavy tracking weight would slowly harm records (all-in-one turntable feature). That is a report about a specific model, not an average for cheap players or a specification for every suitcase turntable.
2. Built-in speakers can limit sound and affect playback
Speakers small enough to fit inside a compact player may constrain sound quality compared with a separate speaker setup. In some all-in-one designs, speakers share the turntable’s enclosure, so their vibration may interfere with playback. What Hi-Fi? highlights both concerns in its budget record player guide.

These are potential limitations, not proof that every built-in speaker sounds poor or disrupts playback. If convenience matters most, check whether the particular player has the sound and connections you need; if sound quality is a priority, consider whether it can connect to separate speakers.
3. Setup, cartridge, or stylus upgrades may be limited
Some low-cost players offer little control over tonearm setup, and some may make cartridge replacement or upgrades difficult. That can limit the ways to adjust or maintain the player over time. Before buying, verify that the stylus is replaceable and whether the cartridge can be changed. Do not assume that a replacement stylus or cartridge will fit: compatibility depends on the exact player and cartridge.
4. Build quality and playback stability can be a concern
A less stable tonearm or less precise construction may undermine consistent playback. What Hi-Fi? recommends checking tonearm stability and build quality rather than judging a player by appearance alone (budget record player guide). This is a reason to inspect a specific model, not grounds to assume that every inexpensive player skips, runs at the wrong speed, or fails.

What to check before buying
- Tracking setup: Look for stated tracking-force adjustment or a clearly specified factory setup. A fixed tonearm is not automatically a problem, but you should understand what the model allows.
- Stylus and cartridge: Confirm what can be replaced or upgraded, and check compatibility for the exact model.
- Tonearm and construction: Check reviews and specifications for information about tonearm stability and build.
- Speaker arrangement: Find out whether speakers are built into the turntable enclosure and whether the player supports external speakers.
- Whole-system needs: Compare the convenience of an all-in-one with the extra components, connections, and cost of a separate setup. An entry-level or more upgradeable turntable is not automatically the better choice for every listener; its value depends on the features and setup you need.
