To find a job online, search several credible sources, narrow openings with specific terms and filters, tailor each application to the posting, and verify the employer and application route before sharing sensitive information. The public-service examples below are U.S. resources; readers elsewhere should use their country’s official employment service and government career portals.
Where to look for jobs online
Do not rely on a single job board. Use a mix of public employment resources, employer career pages, and relevant job-search platforms. USAGov recommends CareerOneStop, state job banks, American Job Centers, local newspaper sites, and libraries as U.S. job-search resources. For U.S. federal positions, USAJOBS is the central federal hiring site.

An employer’s own career page is also useful: it lets you check that a vacancy appears on the organization’s official site and may provide the application route. LinkedIn advises applicants to use trusted methods such as an employer’s official career page; that is a verification step, not a guarantee that every message or listing on a platform is safe.

How to narrow your search
Set your criteria before searching
Write down the job titles you want and adjacent titles that may describe similar work. Add your preferred location or remote arrangement, schedule, salary needs, and any eligibility constraints. Use several specific keywords instead of one broad search term, then adjust them as you learn which titles employers use.

Use filters and alerts where available
Filters vary by site. On USAJOBS, you can search by keyword, occupation, agency, location, salary range, or pay grade, and save searches for daily, weekly, or monthly email notifications. Other platforms may offer different filters and alert schedules, so check their controls rather than assuming they work alike.
How to decide whether a listing fits
Read the entire announcement before applying. Check the qualifications, location, schedule, who may apply, required documents, deadline, and exact submission instructions. For federal jobs, eligibility rules and required materials are specified in the announcement, so a title match alone is not enough to establish that you qualify.
Rank #2
Compare the posting’s requirements with your experience and practical needs. If a key detail is missing or unclear, seek clarification through contact details on the employer’s official website rather than relying solely on an unsolicited message.

Tailor your materials to the opening
Use the qualifications in the actual posting to decide which relevant experience, skills, and accomplishments to emphasize. Keep claims accurate and make it easy for the reader to see how your evidence relates to the role. USAJOBS allows users to upload or create resumes and supports up to five distinct resumes in a profile; that is a platform capability, not a requirement to maintain five versions.

Follow the stated application route
Apply through the route named in the vacancy, whether that is the employer’s system, a platform, or another specified site. Check that the web address belongs to the expected organization before entering personal information. On USAJOBS, some applications transfer to a hiring agency’s separate system, so follow the instructions after leaving USAJOBS as well.
Keep a simple application record
Record the role and employer, date applied, resume version, application route, deadline, and any status or follow-up date. USAJOBS profiles can save jobs and searches and display application status, though an application handled by an agency system may require checking that system for updates.

How to spot and handle suspicious job offers
Scammers may impersonate employers or recruiters to obtain money or personal information. Treat platform verification indicators as one clue, not proof of legitimacy. Independently find the organization’s official website, confirm the opening there when possible, and use the application link or contact information published by the employer.

- Do not pay a supposed recruiter to get a job or to release an offer.
- Be wary of requests to deposit a check and send money back, buy equipment from a specified seller, or provide sensitive information before you have independently verified the employer and process.
- If a listing or message appears fraudulent, report it using the platform’s reporting tools.
In an Associated Press report dated October 28, 2024, FTC consumer education specialist Alvaro Puig explained the fake-check risk: “If you deposit a check and it’s fake, your account will show the money is there. But then days later, the bank will discover that it was a fake check.” Do not treat a temporarily available bank balance as proof that a check has cleared.
