3D-Printing Alternatives for Tabletop Miniatures: Buying, Casting, and Commissioning Models

You do not need to own a 3D printer to field excellent tabletop miniatures. Buy a finished stock figure when a suitable sculpt already exists; choose commercially cast resin or metal when a producer is making repeatable copies; and use a custom builder or commissioned sculpt when the character is unique. Before paying for a large force, verify who owns the sculpt, what you are allowed to print or resell, and whether your event accepts proxies.

Choose the route that fits the miniature you actually need

The most practical alternative to home printing depends on three questions: does the design already exist, how many copies do you need, and who must accept the finished model? A single recognizable unit usually favors a ready-made miniature. A small run of identical figures can justify a professional casting workflow. A one-off character with specific equipment, clothing, or proportions is better suited to a configurable platform or a commissioned sculpt.

Route Best for Typical materials or output Main advantages Main trade-offs
Buy a stock miniature Existing fantasy, sci-fi, historical, or game designs Injection plastic, lead-free pewter, cast resin, or a producer’s printed resin Fastest path, known scale, established assembly and painting process Limited to the catalog and current stock; no control over the pose or equipment
Buy commercially cast resin Players or clubs who want a producer-made alternative to plastic or home printing Cast resin, sometimes metal Can capture a digital sculpt in repeatable copies without owning a printer Resin can cost more per set and may create more production waste; quality varies by producer
Use a custom builder A unique hero, NPC, or army leader that can be assembled from existing parts Plastic, premium plastic, color, bronze, steel, or a digital STL, depending on the service Personalization without learning sculpting or printer setup Pose and parts are constrained by the builder; prices and rights are service-specific
Commission a sculpt or print Characters, conversions, or designs not available in a catalog Printed resin, cast resin, metal, or a digital file Maximum control over appearance and scale Requires a clear brief, deposits or staged payments, quality checks, and written rights

Include more than the material price in your comparison. Shipping, assembly, support removal, washing or curing, priming, painting, failed pieces, and your own time can outweigh the nominal cost of resin or plastic.

Buying a ready-made stock miniature

Why this is the lowest-friction option

If a suitable sculpt is already sold, buying it avoids printer ownership, file preparation, support failures, and post-processing. Manufacturers generally publish a scale or base size, so it is easier to keep an army visually consistent. You also receive a product intended for a repeatable assembly and painting workflow.

Reaper provides a concrete example of how these products are made. Its FAQ explains that the company commissions an artist, receives an epoxy figure, makes a rubber mold, and runs that mold in spincasting machines where casters pour molten metal alloys. Reaper says its metal figures are cast in lead-free pewter. Its Bones lines are made through thermal-plastic injection or a 3D-printing process, and Reaper sometimes releases resin figures. In other words, buying a miniature can give you the result of industrial molding or printing without requiring a machine at home.

What to check before ordering

  • Scale and base: Confirm the stated height, heroic or realistic proportions, base diameter, and whether a base is included. A nominal “28 mm” figure is not necessarily the same height as another maker’s 28 mm figure.
  • Material: Plastic is usually light and easy to handle; pewter is heavier and may need pinning; resin can preserve fine detail but may arrive with flash or a warped part. Treat these as workflow differences, not universal quality rankings.
  • Assembly: Look for a parts diagram or product photographs. Separate weapons, capes, tails, and scenic bases add cleanup and potential failure points.
  • Finish: A bare figure normally needs washing or filing, assembly, primer, and paint. “Painted” listings may use a seller’s own standard, so request photographs of the actual finish when consistency matters.
  • Availability: A catalog entry is not the same as stock on hand. Check dispatch location, back-order status, and replacement policy for missing or bent parts.
  • Style matching: Compare faces, armor proportions, base decoration, and surface texture with the rest of your collection before buying an entire unit.

Metal, plastic, and resin in day-to-day use

Lead-free pewter gives a figure noticeable weight and can make a small model feel substantial on the table. It can also require more careful preparation and stronger joins than a one-piece plastic miniature. Injection plastic is light and often arrives as parts on a sprue, so cutting and assembly are part of the cost in time. Cast or printed resin can show crisp details and undercuts, but thin elements need careful handling and may require additional cleanup. None of these observations establishes a universal breakage rate; inspect the maker’s construction and replacement policy for the specific product.

Commercially cast resin and metal

What “casting” means for a buyer

Casting is a manufacturing route rather than a magic material upgrade. A producer creates a master—often a sculpt or a high-resolution print—builds a mold, and makes multiple copies in resin or metal. It is therefore most useful when the same design will be produced repeatedly. A casual buyer normally encounters the result as a finished, commercially cast miniature rather than performing the mold-making steps personally.

Mantic’s production account illustrates the workflow: its digital sculpts are 3D-printed, divided into components with advice from casters, and prepared for resin casting. Mantic also notes that resin is more expensive per set than plastic and can be wasteful. That trade-off matters when you are comparing a cast-resin army with an injection-plastic range.

When a cast batch makes economic sense

  • Repeat demand: A club, designer, or small manufacturer needs many copies of the same sculpt.
  • Material preference: The producer wants resin’s surface detail or metal’s weight and accepts the extra handling and cost.
  • Shared setup cost: Mold creation is spread over enough copies that the per-model cost falls.
  • Stable design: The sculpt is unlikely to change after the mold is made; a revision can require a new master or mold.

For one or two casual figures, buying an existing cast miniature is usually simpler than arranging a private mold. Ask the producer whether the item is cast or printed, how many pieces it contains, what cleanup is expected, and how miscasts are replaced.

Questions for a producer or small studio

  1. Is the master an original sculpt, a licensed digital file, or a modified third-party design?
  2. What material and hardness are used, and is the item supplied cured, washed, and ready for primer?
  3. Which parts are included, what base size is supplied, and are weapons or scenic elements optional?
  4. How are bubbles, warping, short pours, or broken pieces handled?
  5. Can the producer legally make the copies, and what may you do with the finished models?

Custom design with Hero Forge or a similar builder

What a configurable platform provides

Hero Forge describes itself as a platform for designing and ordering custom tabletop miniatures and statuettes. You assemble a character in a browser, view the result in 3D, export images, and order a bespoke miniature. This approach sits between a stock catalog and a fully commissioned sculpt: you control the character’s appearance, but only within the platform’s available bodies, clothing, equipment, poses, and materials.

Hero Forge’s product page lists plastic, premium plastic, color, bronze, steel, and digital STL formats. The page currently lists physical miniatures starting at $12.99 and digital products at $7.99. Those are Hero Forge’s own starting prices, not a market-wide quote; options, scale, shipping, taxes, and later price changes can increase the total. Its steel page lists custom steel miniatures starting at $49.99. The steel process uses direct metal laser sintering of stainless-steel powder, and Hero Forge says the resulting textured surface is less suitable for painting than plastic.

A reliable ordering workflow

  1. Define the tabletop role: Write down the required base, approximate height, weapon silhouette, and any rules-critical visual features before opening the builder.
  2. Build for readability: Exaggerated weapons, contrasting equipment, and a stable stance are easier to identify at arm’s length than delicate accessories hidden behind a cloak.
  3. Check the preview from every angle: Inspect hands, weapon joins, feet, backpack straps, and contact points. A pose that looks good from the front can create a fragile overhang at the rear.
  4. Select the material deliberately: Choose plastic for a conventional painted model, color when you want a supplied finish, steel for a durable metal keepsake with the stated textured surface, or digital STL when you will handle printing under the applicable license.
  5. Verify scale and base: Confirm the builder’s size options and the base supplied with the order. Match the choice to your game’s measurement conventions.
  6. Save the design record: Keep the order confirmation, design identifier, and any license terms. They are useful if you need a replacement or later commission a print from your own file.

When a print service is more convenient

A print service lets you use a custom file without buying and maintaining a printer. We Print Miniatures advertises made-to-order Hero Forge figures in grey resin, cleaned and ready to paint, commonly from 28 mm to 75 mm, using the customer’s file. That listing describes one provider’s process, not a universal standard for every seller. Ask any service about support removal, curing, scale, breakage in transit, replacement terms, packaging, and shipping destination before paying.

Request a photograph or render of the exact file, confirm whether the seller may rescale or modify it, and establish who is responsible if a thin sword, staff, or antenna arrives broken. A low headline price can become expensive if a replacement requires another international shipment.

Commissioning a sculpt from an artist

Use a commission when the design itself is unavailable

A commissioned sculpt is appropriate for a named character, a conversion that combines incompatible parts, a faction with no commercial range, or a display piece at an unusual scale. Unlike a configurable builder, the artist can design new anatomy, clothing, weapons, and poses. The additional freedom brings a longer brief-and-review process and a greater need for written agreements.

Write a brief that prevents expensive revisions

  • Provide front, side, and rear references, plus a short description of the character’s role.
  • State the game scale, base dimensions, desired material, and whether the model must be one piece or assembled from components.
  • Identify non-negotiable details such as a crest, weapon profile, facial features, or faction markings.
  • Specify the deliverables: preview renders, a watertight STL, separated parts, a supported print, a physical master, or a finished miniature.
  • Agree on revision rounds, milestones, payment schedule, file formats, and what happens if the sculpt cannot be printed at the requested scale.
  • Set out ownership and permitted use in writing, including personal gaming, gifts, commercial sales, digital-file distribution, and future rescaling.

Do not assume that paying for a sculpt automatically transfers copyright or commercial rights. The contract should identify the rights granted and any restrictions on the artist’s portfolio use, derivative versions, and resale.

Licensing and ownership: check before you print, sell, or commission in bulk

Hero Forge’s personal-print conditions

Hero Forge’s legal guidance says a customer may pay a person or business to print or paint its figures only under specific conditions: the customer purchases the model directly, the printer makes copies only for that purchaser, and the files are deleted after the transaction. This is materially different from buying a file and authorizing a shop to keep a production library or sell copies to other customers.

Hero Forge’s partnerships information also says it does not currently license its art or models for commercial board-game or other projects. If you are developing a product line, do not treat a Hero Forge export or a marketplace listing as commercial clearance. Commission an original sculpt or work with a manufacturer that can document the required rights.

Commercially licensed alternatives

MimicWorkshop illustrates the safer model for commercial production: it says it makes physical tabletop products under formal commercial licenses and identifies licensed Cast n Play and Modi Case designs. A license statement should name the rights holder, the design or collection covered, the territory and term where relevant, and whether manufacturing, modification, resale, and marketing are allowed.

A buyer’s rights checklist

  1. Ask who owns the sculpt and whether the seller created it, licensed it, or merely downloaded it.
  2. Confirm whether your purchase includes physical-use rights only, a personal digital-print right, or commercial manufacturing and resale rights.
  3. Ask whether the file may be rescaled, repaired, remixed, or combined with another design.
  4. Do not redistribute an STL, keep a vendor’s file archive, or authorize additional copies unless the written terms permit it.
  5. Retain invoices, license text, and correspondence with the order records.
  6. For a commercial line, obtain a signed agreement from the rights holder or use a supplier that publishes formal licensing information.

A physical listing on a marketplace is not proof that the seller is licensed. If the answer about ownership is vague, treat that uncertainty as a reason not to place a large order.

Tournament and organized-play acceptance

Proxy legality is local. The End Games policy says alternative models—including conversions, 3D prints, custom sculpts, and third-party models—may require tournament-organizer permission and may be excluded by an event’s rules. A miniature can be entirely suitable for a home role-playing session and still fail a particular organized-play requirement.

Check before buying an army

  • Read the exact event packet, not just the game’s general rules.
  • Look for requirements about official models, recognizable silhouettes, base sizes, faction markings, and measurements.
  • Email the organizer with a photograph or render of the proposed proxy and request a written answer.
  • Ask whether the policy applies differently to casual games, local tournaments, and ranked or streamed events.
  • Bring the approved original or an alternate unit when practical in case a judge rejects an ambiguous model.

Do this before commissioning a full army. An approval for one character does not necessarily authorize every unit, and a store’s house rule may not apply at a larger event.

Compare the complete workload, not just the material

Work stage Stock plastic or metal Cast resin Printed resin from a service Custom builder or commission
Design selection Choose from a catalog Choose the producer’s catalog or licensed range Supply an approved digital file Configure parts or brief an artist
Physical preparation Sprue cutting, filing, assembly; metal may need pinning Flash removal, washing, possible gap filling Support removal, washing and curing if not supplied ready Depends on whether the vendor supplies a finished print or a raw file
Customization Conversions performed by the buyer Limited to producer’s components unless converted Rescaling or editing only if rights and service permit it Highest control, with revision time and fees
Failure points Missing parts, bent metal, out-of-stock items Bubbles, warping, short pours, mold wear Supports, uncured resin, fragile details, transit damage Misread brief, unusable geometry, missed deadline, rights dispute
Rights question Usually the manufacturer’s finished-product terms Producer must have manufacturing rights Customer and printer must follow the file license Contract must define copyright and commercial use

Painting is a separate decision. A vendor-painted miniature can save labor but makes color matching and future repairs dependent on the seller’s finish. A bare model gives you control and requires primer, paints, tools, and time. Compare the finished result you need, not an idealized material label.

How to estimate the real cost of a small force

One-off model

For one character, start with the delivered price of a stock figure or custom order. Add shipping, tax, a base if it is not included, assembly supplies, and replacement risk. A Hero Forge starting price is not a guaranteed checkout total: the company lists physical minis from $12.99, digital products from $7.99, and steel from $49.99 on its respective pages, while material, size, options, shipping, and taxes affect the final amount.

  • Delivery: shipping, taxes, import charges, and likely replacement shipments.
  • Your labor: assembly, support removal, washing, curing, priming, and painting.

Commercial casting becomes more attractive as the same design is repeated because setup is spread across copies. It is less attractive when you need only one or two models or expect frequent design changes. A ready-made plastic set may remain cheaper than resin even when resin offers a sharper or more intricate surface.

Practical decision paths

“I need a normal adventurer this week”

Search established stock ranges first. Compare scale, base, material, and dispatch time, then choose plastic, pewter, or resin according to your assembly and handling preference. A stock figure avoids the design and approval cycle of a commission.

“I need one character that looks like my player”

Use a configurable builder if its parts cover the brief. Order a physical mini when you want the vendor to handle production, or buy a digital STL only when you understand the license and have a reliable printing route. Inspect thin details and the rear view before checkout.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“Our club needs twelve identical specialists”

Price an existing boxed set against a cast-resin or print-service batch. Ask for a sample or detailed photos, confirm replacement terms, and calculate cleanup and shipping for all copies. A private mold is rarely sensible unless the group truly needs many repeats.

“I am launching a commercial miniature range”

Use an original sculpt or a written commercial license. Commission the design, approve a printable master, document ownership, and select a caster or manufacturer that can show its production rights. Personal-use permissions from a custom builder are not a substitute for commercial licensing.

“I want to use proxies at a tournament”

Ask the organizer before ordering. Send the exact model, base size, and intended unit, and keep the response. If the event requires official products, choose a stock miniature or an explicitly approved alternative instead of gambling on a large proxy force.

Order and inspection checklist

  • Record the miniature’s scale, base size, material, component count, and whether it is supplied assembled.
  • Confirm the seller’s dispatch location, shipping cost, taxes, and breakage or missing-part policy.
  • For resin or prints, ask whether the piece is washed, cured, and ready for primer.
  • For digital files, save the license and confirm whether a print service may use the file for your order.
  • For commissions, approve renders before production and define revision limits.
  • Photograph damaged packaging and the model on arrival; report problems within the seller’s stated window.
  • Test one model before committing to a full army when the material, scale, or vendor is unfamiliar.
  • Obtain tournament approval in writing before buying a large proxy force.

Bottom line: pick the least complicated route that meets your constraints

Buy a stock miniature when the catalog already has the sculpt you need; it is the fastest, most predictable alternative to home printing. Choose a commercially cast range when repeat demand or a preferred resin or metal feel justifies the producer’s setup and per-copy cost. Use Hero Forge or another builder for a personalized one-off, and commission an artist when the design cannot be assembled from existing parts. In every case, treat licensing and event acceptance as purchase requirements, not afterthoughts: a beautiful model that you cannot legally reproduce or field at your event is an expensive mistake.
