The feature’s effect depends on the printer, firmware and stepper drivers. On some models it also slows printing or changes how the machine handles lost steps, so check the exact model and firmware before switching modes.
What “silent mode” means depends on the printer
There is no single 3D-printer setting with a consistent name or behavior. Some printers offer a menu option that changes motion limits; others use stepper-driver modes such as StealthChop, configured through firmware. The same label can therefore describe different trade-offs.

For example, Prusa documents distinct modes across its printer generations. Klipper explains the behavior of driver modes, while Marlin describes how supported drivers can switch modes at configured speeds. Identify your printer model, firmware version and driver before relying on a menu path or copying a configuration.
What a quiet mode can change
Motor noise and print time on newer Prusa models
On the CORE One and Original MK4/S, MK3.9/S, MK3.5/S, XL and MINI/+ running firmware 6.0.0 or later, Prusa’s Stealth Mode limits acceleration, feedrate and jerk. Prusa says those motion limits reduce noise but increase print time. Its firmware 6.0.0 release article illustrates the trade-off with a print that takes about 8 hours in normal mode taking about 8 hours and 50 minutes in Stealth Mode. That is an example, not a universal time penalty: Prusa says the result depends on the model’s shape, number of objects and travel distances.

Stepper behavior in Klipper
Klipper’s TMC driver documentation compares StealthChop, which may be significantly quieter on some printers, with spreadCycle, which generally offers greater torque and positional accuracy. In one constant-velocity test configuration, Klipper observed positional lag around 75% of a full step—about 0.150 mm in that example. The documentation does not establish that figure as typical for other printers or that it will cause a visible defect.
Klipper also warns that a driver may behave poorly if its mode changes while the motor is moving. This is a configuration consideration, not a reason to assume a quiet mode will damage prints.

Speed-based switching in Marlin
On supported TMC2130, TMC2208 and TMC2209 drivers, Marlin’s M913 hybrid-threshold documentation describes switching from quieter StealthChop to spreadCycle when feed rate exceeds a configured threshold, if HYBRID_THRESHOLD is enabled. A printer using this setup may not stay in its quieter behavior at every speed. The setting depends on the board, driver, firmware and configuration; do not copy a command or threshold to an unidentified machine.
Which mode should you use?
| Mode or approach | Potential benefit | Trade-off or limitation | Where it applies |
|---|---|---|---|
| Prusa Stealth Mode, firmware 6.0.0 or later | Lower noise through limited motion settings | Longer prints; the time difference varies by print | CORE One and Original MK4/S, MK3.9/S, MK3.5/S, XL and MINI/+ as listed by Prusa |
| Klipper StealthChop | Can reduce audible stepper noise | Generally less torque and positional accuracy than spreadCycle; behavior varies by setup | Compatible TMC driver configurations |
| Klipper spreadCycle | Generally greater torque and positional accuracy | May be more audible than StealthChop | Compatible TMC driver configurations |
| Older Prusa Silent mode | Quieter operation on the documented models | Reduced power on some models; specific detection and speed behavior differs by generation | MK3 family and MK2/S, MK2.5 and MK2.5S, with different documented behavior |
These are not interchangeable choices across brands. Use the built-in mode documented for your exact machine if one exists; treat driver configuration as a separate, firmware-specific task.

Check model-specific limitations before printing
Prusa MK3 and MK3S+
Prusa says Stealth mode on the MK3/MK3S+ does not provide crash detection for lost steps. Do not assume that limitation applies to other Prusa models or other manufacturers.
Prusa MK2/S, MK2.5 and MK2.5S
On these models, Prusa describes Silent mode as using less current, making the printer quieter but less powerful. Its guidance recommends Hi-power mode in certain situations, including lost steps or manually raising print speed above 100%. Those instructions are specific to these models; they are not general rules for other printers.

How to try a built-in mode safely
- Identify the machine and firmware. Check the printer’s model and firmware version, then find the manufacturer’s documentation for that combination. Do not assume another generation uses the same mode or controls.
- Use the documented control. For the Prusa models covered by firmware 6.0.0 guidance, Prusa documents changing Stealth Mode from LCD Settings while idle. During a print, the documented route is LCD Tune; a change takes effect after queued G-code commands are processed. Confirm the labels on your installed firmware before relying on them.
- Try a familiar print and compare. Listen for which sounds change and note the print duration. A reduction in motor noise may make fans or other components more noticeable; Prusa specifically notes the print-cooling fan as the loudest part in Stealth mode on the machines covered by its guidance.
- Watch for print-specific problems. If you see lost steps or another change in print quality, stop relying on the mode and consult the instructions for your printer. Do not compensate by copying a driver setting from a different machine.
Why the printer may still be audible
Quiet mode usually addresses motion or stepper-motor behavior, not every sound a printer makes. Fans and other components can remain audible. The cited official documentation does not establish a universal decibel reduction, so “silent” should be read as a mode label—not a promise that a printer becomes inaudible.
