Samsung users who switch to Google Messages most often describe missing themes and appearance controls, inbox categories, the ability to copy only part of a message, and familiar navigation. Those are recurring complaints in user discussions, not a measured ranking or a view shared by every switcher. Google Messages, meanwhile, offers RCS features such as typing indicators, read receipts, and high-resolution media when the relevant requirements are met.
What switchers say they miss
People discussing the transition have raised four kinds of friction. The reports are anecdotal and self-selected; there is no published statistic here establishing which feature is missed most or how common any complaint is.

Themes and thread appearance
Samsung Messages offered thread-level appearance controls. Samsung’s guide documents custom wallpaper or background colors for individual conversations and, on some devices, controls for bubble opacity and text contrast. Some switchers describe missing broader themes and app appearance options in Google Messages. These are related but not identical claims: Samsung’s guide confirms the Samsung Messages controls, while the reports describe users’ experience after switching. Samsung’s Samsung Messages feature guide and a user transition discussion provide those respective perspectives.

Some users say they miss categories as a way to organize messages. That is a preference reported by individual switchers, not evidence that every Samsung Messages setup used categories or that the feature is unavailable in every Google Messages version or configuration. If categories are part of your daily routine, check your current app’s inbox before changing your default.

Copying just part of a message
Users have specifically asked about selecting and copying a portion of a text instead of copying the entire message. The discussions frame this as a small but noticeable convenience. The available official documentation does not establish a complete, version-specific comparison of text selection between the apps, so treat this as a reported usability difference rather than a universal limitation.
Familiar navigation
One user describes needing an extra swipe to return to the conversation list. Gesture settings, app version, and device can affect how navigation feels, so this is best understood as a personal workflow complaint—not a fixed difference for every phone.

What Google Messages offers in return
Google Messages supports RCS chats with high-resolution photos and videos, typing indicators, read receipts, messaging over mobile data or Wi-Fi, and group-chat management. These functions depend on RCS availability and settings. Google’s end-to-end encryption claim is narrower: it applies to qualifying Google Messages conversations when all participants use Google Messages with RCS enabled. See Google’s RCS overview for the feature and eligibility details.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesCross-platform encryption is also not universal. Google announced that end-to-end encrypted RCS messaging between supported iPhones running iOS 26.5 and Android users on the latest Google Messages version was beginning a beta rollout. Supported devices, carriers, and encryption settings affect availability. Google’s announcement describes that rollout; it should not be read as a guarantee that every iPhone–Android RCS conversation is encrypted.

What happens to Samsung messages when you switch
Samsung’s U.S. guidance says messages and conversations transfer automatically to Google Messages. The transfer time depends on the amount of data and may take up to approximately 24 hours, according to Samsung’s support estimate. Allow the transfer to finish, then check important threads in Google Messages rather than assuming the history is complete immediately. Samsung’s guidance does not guarantee a flawless result in every individual case. Samsung’s U.S. discontinuation and migration guidance covers the process.
The policy is geographically specific: Samsung says Samsung Messages is discontinued starting July 6, 2026, on Galaxy devices running Android 12 or newer in the U.S. After discontinuation, the app cannot send messages except to emergency numbers or emergency contacts; Samsung also says it is not available for download on those devices. This should not be generalized to other markets. Check Samsung’s local support guidance if your device is outside the U.S.

Check these Galaxy device workflows before switching
Older Galaxy phones and ongoing RCS chats
For Galaxy devices released before 2022, Samsung says changing messaging apps may temporarily interrupt ongoing RCS conversations. Samsung says RCS can resume if both participants use Google Messages; SMS and MMS remain available during the pause. If an RCS conversation matters, verify that the other person can use Google Messages as well. Samsung’s U.S. guidance explains this transition caveat.
Older watches
Samsung says older Tizen OS watches launched before Galaxy Watch4 will no longer show full message conversation history after discontinuation, though they can still read and send texts. Samsung’s documentation also identifies Galaxy Watch4 or newer as necessary for its stated Google Messages watch support. Google’s guidance separately notes limitations for legacy Galaxy watches. Check the specific watch model and the phone-watch features you rely on in Samsung’s support information and Google’s Samsung-device guidance.

Tablets and Call & Text on Other Devices
Samsung says Message Continuity through Call & Text on Other Devices will be disrupted by the change. Google Messages can work across selected Galaxy phones, tablets, and watches, but Samsung and Google both document model, carrier, or legacy-device limitations. If you use a tablet for messaging, confirm that your exact model and carrier support the workflow before relying on it. See Samsung’s guidance and Google’s device support information.
Quick Recap
How to decide whether the switch will bother you
- Appearance matters most: Check whether you rely on individual thread backgrounds, text contrast, or other Samsung-specific appearance controls.
- Inbox organization matters most: Confirm how your categories and message sorting needs map to your current Google Messages setup instead of assuming every configuration behaves alike.
- Message handling matters most: Try copying part of a message and returning to the conversation list with your usual gestures before making the switch permanent.
- RCS matters most: Check that RCS is available for your carrier and device, and that conversation participants have it enabled; encryption requires the specific qualifying Google Messages setup.
- Other Galaxy devices matter most: Verify watch, tablet, and Call & Text continuity against your exact models, especially if you use older devices.
