For washable PVA glue-stick residue, start with a cool build plate, a soft cloth dampened with water, and—if needed—a few drops of mild dish soap. Wipe away the soap and dry the plate completely before printing. Check the plate maker’s care instructions before using solvents or abrasives: cleaning methods differ by surface, and acetone can damage some coatings.
Clean glue-stick residue with water first
- Let the bed cool. If the build plate is removable, take it off only if its manual says removal is safe.
- Wipe with water. Dampen a soft cloth and wipe the glue from the plate. Snapmaker’s adhesive-removal instructions recommend moistening a cloth with water to wipe the build plate: Snapmaker’s build-plate adhesive instructions.
- Use mild dish soap for residue that remains. Wash with warm water and a few drops of dish soap, then wipe or rinse away all soap. Prusa says PVA glue can be wiped off with dish soap and water in its first-layer troubleshooting guidance.
- Dry completely. Make sure the plate is fully dry before reinstalling it or starting a print.
- Check the plate-specific instructions if glue remains. Identify the surface and coating, then follow its maker’s approved method rather than escalating automatically to a solvent, blade, or abrasive pad.
Choose a cleaning method that fits the build surface
Build plates are not interchangeable: a method intended for one surface may damage another. If you do not know the plate material or coating, consult the printer or plate manual before using anything beyond water and mild dish soap.

- Steel sheets: Prusa recommends warm water with a few drops of dish soap when residue remains after IPA cleaning. It describes 90% isopropyl alcohol as a degreaser, not a universal fix for accumulated glue.
- Textured or satin powder-coated sheets: Prusa explicitly says not to use acetone on these surfaces.
- PEI: LulzBot documents a particular PEI maintenance procedure using a 30/70 isopropyl alcohol/water mix, a 50°C bed, wet scuffing, and repeated wiping. Those are settings for its specified PEI procedure, not a general recipe for other plates. LulzBot’s PEI cleaning and maintenance instructions explain the method.
- Glass or garolite: Creality says acetone may be used sparingly on some such beds, but cautions that it can damage or degrade PEI or BuildTak. Confirm your exact surface’s compatibility before using it. See Creality’s bed-cleaning guidance.
What to avoid when glue will not come off
- Do not assume IPA will dissolve glue buildup. Prusa distinguishes degreasing from removing residue and recommends soapy water for residue that IPA does not remove.
- Do not use acetone without checking the exact surface. It is unsuitable for Prusa’s textured and satin powder-coated sheets, and Creality warns it can harm PEI and BuildTak.
- Do not scrape or scour by default. Abrasion can affect a coating; use it only if the maker’s instructions permit it.
If the water-and-soap method is not enough
Stop and identify the plate rather than trying increasingly harsh cleaners. Follow the build-plate maker’s procedure for that surface, including any specified cleaner, temperature, or wiping technique. Manufacturer directions differ, and a specialized maintenance process such as LulzBot’s PEI wet-scuffing instructions should not be transferred to another plate without approval.
