If the Mac’s top menu bar seems frozen, first move your pointer to the top edge of the screen: the bar may simply be set to hide. If it is visible but unresponsive, relaunch Finder from the Force Quit window. Restart normally if that does not help; force a shutdown only when the Mac will not restart.
Check whether the menu bar is hidden
Move the pointer to the top of the screen. A hidden menu bar should appear. To change its visibility, open System Settings > Menu Bar and choose the desired option under “Automatically hide and show the menu bar”: Always, On Desktop Only, In Full Screen Only, or Never. The labels or layout can vary by macOS version. Apple’s menu bar settings guide explains the available behavior.

Relaunch Finder if the bar is unresponsive
- Press Option-Command-Esc to open the Force Quit window.
- Select Finder, then click Relaunch.
Finder is always open, and Apple documents relaunching it from this window if it stops responding. This refreshes Finder without requiring you to shut down the Mac. Apple’s Force Quit instructions include the Finder steps.

If relaunching Finder does not restore the menu bar and the Mac still responds to input, choose Apple menu > Restart. A normal restart is preferable to forcing the Mac off because it gives macOS and open apps a chance to close in the usual way. Apple documents the standard restart command in its Mac startup and shutdown guidance.

Force a shutdown only if the Mac will not restart
If the Mac will not respond to the normal restart command, press and hold the power button for up to 10 seconds, until it turns off, then press it again to start the Mac. On a laptop with Touch ID, use and hold the Touch ID button. A forced shutdown can discard unsaved changes. Apple’s shutdown instructions describe this fallback.
If the menu bar keeps freezing
A recurring freeze may involve a broader software or peripheral issue, but the symptom alone does not identify a cause. Work through these checks one at a time so you can see whether the behavior changes:

- Install available macOS software updates.
- Check whether the problem began after connecting a peripheral; disconnect it and see whether the issue returns.
- Consider whether a recently installed third-party plug-in or interface enhancement coincides with the freezes.
- Use Safe Mode as an alternate startup option for troubleshooting. The steps differ between Apple silicon and Intel Macs; follow Apple’s instructions for your model in its startup and shutdown guide.
These checks help narrow down what changed; they do not establish that any one item is the cause.
Use Activity Monitor only for a specific unresponsive process
Activity Monitor can help when an individual process is marked “(Not Responding),” but it is not a routine first fix for a frozen menu bar. Select the affected process and choose View > Quit Process. Apple distinguishes Quit, which lets a process exit when safe, from Force Quit, which ends it immediately. Forcing a process to quit can lose data in open files or affect apps and processes that depend on it. Do not terminate a named system process just because the menu bar is stuck; the right process and consequences depend on the situation.
