Move to 64GB (2x32GB) when your regular workload includes large Photoshop documents, After Effects compositions, RAW or complex video projects, virtual machines, large software builds, local data workloads, or several demanding applications at once. Capacity helps only when your workload actually needs it; memory speed, timings, dual-channel operation, CPU support and motherboard limits still determine how well the system performs.
The short answer: choose capacity by workload
DDR5 capacity is the amount of working memory available to Windows and your applications. A 32GB system has enough room for current games, Discord, browser tabs, office software, coding tools and normal multitasking. A 64GB system gives demanding creative and technical workloads more room before Windows has to move inactive data to storage.

| Use case | Recommended capacity | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Competitive or mainstream gaming, including Discord and browser tabs | 32GB | Current gaming tests find no consistent advantage from 64GB. |
| Office work, browsing, streaming, coding and ordinary multitasking | 32GB | It provides substantial headroom without paying for capacity you may not use. |
| Hobby Photoshop, Lightroom or 1080p and short-form editing | 32GB | Current application guidance generally lists 32GB, with only a small Lightroom penalty outside AI-heavy work. |
| Professional Photoshop or Lightroom, large RAW libraries and serious multitasking | 64GB | Large projects can exceed 32GB and benefit from keeping more data resident. |
| After Effects, Fusion, complex 4K video or several creative applications | 64GB minimum; 128GB for heavier 4K-and-above work | After Effects guidance recommends at least 64GB for most users, while higher-resolution work can require 128GB. |
| Virtual machines, local databases, large software builds or AI and data workloads | 64GB or more | Several large working sets can remain in memory at the same time; size the system from measured peak use. |
What RAM capacity changes in a real PC
Applications keep active code and data in RAM because it is much faster to access than an SSD or hard drive. Microsoft describes the practical effect simply: more memory lets a device do more at the same time without performance slowdowns. When available RAM runs short, Windows compresses memory and uses a pagefile on storage. Paging keeps the system functioning, but storage access is far slower than RAM, so switching between programs, opening large files and loading game assets can become noticeably slower.
Capacity is separate from memory speed. Two 32GB kits can have different data rates, timings, memory ranks and stability. A 64GB kit running at a conservative, supported setting can feel better than a faster kit that is unstable or repeatedly falls back to a lower speed. Capacity comparisons are meaningful only when the other variables are reasonably controlled.

Why 32GB is the gaming default
What the latest controlled test found
TechSpot’s 2026 gaming update used a Ryzen 7 9800X3D, a GeForce RTX 5090 and one 64GB DDR5 kit. Instead of changing the physical modules, it changed Windows’ addressable-memory limit to compare 16GB, 32GB and 64GB under the same timings. At 4K, Marvel Rivals showed virtually identical results at all three capacities. Stalker 2 was also similar at 16GB, 32GB and 64GB, and there was no 32GB-versus-64GB advantage in Black Myth: Wukong, Cyberpunk 2077, Doom: The Dark Ages, Kingdom Come: Deliverance II and several other tested games.
Mafia: The Old Country was the notable exception in that test set. It used about 20GB for smooth play, making 24GB to 32GB appropriate. That is a reason to avoid an 16GB purchase for a new high-end gaming PC, not evidence that 64GB is normally required. TechSpot’s explicit conclusion was that “32GB is the sweet spot for gamers.”
Earlier 1440p testing shows the same pattern
In TechSpot’s 2024 test of more than 30 games at 1440p with an RTX 4090, Hogwarts Legacy averaged about 110 frames per second with 64GB and recorded 1% lows of 51 fps. Limiting the same system to 32GB produced similar frame-time results because the game and system used about 22GB. At 16GB, traversal stutters appeared. The practical boundary was therefore enough capacity to avoid paging, not an automatic frame-rate gain from doubling 32GB to 64GB.
Background applications can change the result
A game does not run in isolation. A browser with many tabs, voice chat, a launcher, recording software and an overlay all consume memory. TechSpot observed that when a game and background applications competed for 32GB, Windows could push background data into the pagefile, making task switching slower. That is a responsiveness problem rather than proof that the game itself needs 64GB. If you regularly record, stream, keep dozens of tabs open and run a development environment while playing, 64GB is a comfort upgrade, but it remains a workload choice.
Do not confuse GPU memory with system RAM
Graphics memory matters separately. TechSpot found that an 8GB graphics card could spill some assets into system RAM. In its Marvel Rivals test, moving from 16GB to 32GB dramatically improved 1% lows with an 8GB GPU. This is a balanced-system issue: the extra system memory prevents a low-RAM system from becoming a bottleneck when VRAM is tight. It does not establish a normal requirement for 64GB of system RAM.

How 32GB and 64GB behave in creative applications
Puget’s capacity study and test conditions
Puget Systems tested 64GB, 32GB and 16GB capacities on an AMD Ryzen 9 9950X3D2 Dual Edition, an ASUS ProArt X670E-Creator motherboard, DDR5-5600 memory, a GeForce RTX 5080 and Windows 11 Pro. The controlled applications were Lightroom Classic, After Effects, Photoshop, Premiere and DaVinci Resolve. Results are workload-specific: a benchmark project is not a promise about every media file, plug-in or timeline.
Lightroom Classic
Puget measured 32GB at 2.5% lower overall performance than 64GB, but AI-tool performance was 15% lower. For a hobbyist who develops ordinary photographs, 32GB is acceptable. Professional photographers with large catalogs, extensive masking or frequent AI denoise and selection tools have a stronger reason to choose 64GB.
Photoshop
Puget found no meaningful overall difference between 32GB and 64GB in its current benchmark. A separate Kingston test reached a different practical limit: its Photoshop workload used more than 32GB, and every tested 64GB kit beat its 32GB counterpart at the same speed because the 32GB configuration relied partly on the Windows pagefile. The two results are not contradictory. A moderate benchmark can fit in 32GB, while a large layered document, many smart objects, high-resolution source images and other open programs can exceed it.
Premiere Pro
Puget found 32GB and 64GB close in many controlled Premiere tests and lists 32GB as the recommendation for full performance. Real projects vary substantially, however. Multicam timelines, high-resolution source media, large effects stacks, dynamic links and simultaneous exports can fill memory. If Premiere is an occasional editor, start at 32GB; if editing is paid work or projects routinely involve several demanding applications, 64GB reduces the chance of paging.
DaVinci Resolve and Fusion
Puget reports small overall differences between 32GB and 64GB in DaVinci Resolve, but identifies 64GB as the threshold for Fusion. RAW workflows also benefit from starting at 64GB. A simple 1080p timeline therefore does not automatically justify 64GB, while node-heavy compositing, Fusion effects or RAW media do.

After Effects
After Effects is the clearest case for more memory. Puget’s guidance for version 25.2 notes that High-Performance Preview Playback shifts preview caching toward fast SSD storage, yet still recommends at least 64GB for most users and 128GB for higher-resolution work at 4K or above. Its broader wording is that users without a specific need should generally have at least 64GB, or 128GB when working at higher resolutions. Kingston’s testing also found that increasing capacity produced the largest performance change in After Effects among the applications it measured.
What ordinary productivity needs
Office, browsing and streaming
Word processing, spreadsheets, email, video calls, music and a reasonable number of browser tabs fit comfortably in 32GB. Microsoft’s general memory guidance supports the principle that additional RAM increases simultaneous headroom, but it does not make 64GB a requirement for these tasks.
Programming and development
Editors, compilers and a local test server usually fit in 32GB. The calculation changes when you run several containers, Android emulators, virtual machines, large language-model tools, indexing services or a large monorepo build at once. Those workloads keep multiple working sets resident, so 64GB is a sensible starting point and more may be justified by measured peak usage.
Virtual machines and local data work
Each virtual machine needs memory that cannot simultaneously be used by the host or another guest. A host with 32GB can run a lightweight Linux VM, but several guests or a Windows development VM can leave too little for the host and cause paging. Databases, data-analysis notebooks and local AI pipelines have similarly variable footprints. Monitor peak committed memory during your actual workload rather than relying on a universal number.
DDR5 kit layouts, speed and platform limits
Use a matched dual-channel kit
For mainstream desktop platforms, the normal configurations are two 16GB modules for 32GB or two 32GB modules for 64GB. Buy one matched kit instead of combining unrelated modules. Mixing kits can force lower speeds, loosen timings or create boot and stability problems, even when the advertised specifications look similar.

Kingston’s tested examples include a FURY Beast DDR5-5600 CL40 64GB kit (2x32GB, model KF556C40BBAK2-64), a matching 32GB (2x16GB) kit and faster 32GB Renegade kits rated at DDR5-5600, 6400, 6800 and 7200. These are examples of capacity, layout and rated speed, not a universal buying order.
Check compatibility before ordering
- Read the motherboard manual for maximum capacity, supported data rates and preferred two-DIMM slots.
- Check the board’s qualified memory list when possible, especially for high-speed or high-capacity modules.
- Confirm that the CPU’s memory controller and the board’s firmware support the kit’s rated profile.
- Plan for two modules rather than filling four slots unless the platform documentation specifically supports the desired speed with four DIMMs.
Choose stable speed after choosing capacity
Kingston’s Adobe tests showed that DDR5 speed changes affected application scores. TechSpot also warns that frequency, timings and memory rank can confound capacity comparisons. A stable DDR5-6000 32GB kit is a sensible gaming target when the CPU and motherboard support it. For a creator workstation, a stable 64GB kit at the platform’s supported speed is preferable to an unstable overclock that causes crashes, memory training failures or application errors.
A practical buying procedure
- List your simultaneous workload. Write down the game or applications you run together, including browsers, recording tools, virtual machines and background services.
- Measure the peak. During the heaviest session, open Windows Task Manager and inspect the Memory section. Record committed and in-use memory while the project is actively rendering, exporting or compiling.
- Choose the capacity tier. Select 32GB when peak use remains comfortably below that level. Select 64GB when projects approach 32GB, paging is visible, or you routinely run several large applications. Consider 128GB for higher-resolution After Effects work when the platform supports it.
- Verify the motherboard and CPU. Check maximum capacity, qualified modules, slot recommendations and supported data rates before purchasing.
- Buy a single matched kit. Use 2x16GB for 32GB or 2x32GB for 64GB. Avoid adding a second unrelated kit later unless the manufacturer and platform documentation support the resulting configuration.
- Enable the rated memory profile. After installation, enter the firmware setup and enable the platform’s supported memory profile if needed. Confirm the resulting speed and stability in Windows.
- Stress-test the finished system. Run your real games and applications, then a memory stability test. If crashes or boot loops appear, return to a conservative supported speed before changing capacity.
Symptoms that you need more RAM
- Task Manager shows memory usage and committed memory near the system limit during your normal workload.
- Switching from a game or creative application to another program causes long pauses while storage activity spikes.
- After Effects, Photoshop, Premiere or Resolve repeatedly warns about memory, drops previews or becomes unresponsive when large projects are open.
- A virtual machine or container workload forces the host to reclaim memory and page heavily.
- Closing background applications immediately restores responsiveness, indicating contention rather than a CPU or GPU limit.
More RAM will not fix every slowdown. If memory use is well below the installed capacity, investigate CPU utilization, GPU limits, storage latency, thermal throttling, application settings and driver issues instead.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Buying 64GB for a game that uses 20GB
Extra capacity does not create frames when the game and operating system already fit in 32GB. Put the budget toward a faster CPU or GPU, a better monitor or storage if those are the actual limits.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsBuying 16GB to save money on a new build
Modern games, browsers and background services can leave 16GB with little margin. TechSpot observed traversal stutter in Hogwarts Legacy at 16GB, and its newer testing found 32GB appropriate for a game using about 20GB. A 32GB kit is the safer baseline for a new gaming system.

Choosing capacity while ignoring speed and timings
A capacity-only comparison can be misleading. Compare kits at a speed your CPU and motherboard can run reliably, and keep timings and rank in mind. Never assume a higher advertised number is faster in every application.
Filling all four DIMM slots without checking support
Four modules place more load on the memory controller and can reduce the maximum stable data rate. Two matched modules are the straightforward path to 32GB or 64GB on mainstream DDR5 desktops.
Assuming an application recommendation covers every project
Published recommendations describe a class of workload. A 32GB Premiere recommendation does not guarantee that a complex 4K multicam project with Photoshop, a browser and an export will stay below 32GB. Use the application’s own peak behavior as the deciding evidence.

| If this describes you | Buy | Why |
|---|---|---|
| You mainly game, browse, chat and stream | 32GB (2x16GB) | It is the current gaming sweet spot and leaves useful multitasking headroom. |
| You edit occasional photos or 1080p video | 32GB (2x16GB) | Current Photoshop and Premiere guidance supports it; Lightroom’s non-AI penalty is small. |
| You handle professional photo work, large RAW catalogs or heavy multitasking | 64GB (2x32GB) | Large projects can exceed 32GB, and keeping data in RAM avoids pagefile slowdowns. |
| You use After Effects, Fusion, RAW video or complex 4K projects | 64GB minimum | After Effects and Fusion guidance put demanding work in this tier. |
| You work above 4K in After Effects or run several VMs and data services | 128GB or a measured higher capacity | Higher-resolution compositions and multiple resident workloads can exceed 64GB. |
The durable rule is simple: 32GB is the right default for gaming and normal productivity; 64GB is worthwhile when your applications demonstrably approach the 32GB boundary or when your workflow is expensive to interrupt with paging. Buy the matched dual-channel kit that your platform can run stably, then choose speed and timings within that constraint.
