You can add place-based arrival and departure alerts for check-ins, and use Screen Time to manage whether a child can change location-sharing settings. These are different tools: Find My provides the location view, notifications flag selected events, and Screen Time manages restrictions. None guarantees uninterrupted tracking.

Apple describes the first feature as sharing a family member’s location, rather than covert or guaranteed tracking. The documented experience depends on sharing being enabled and the relevant device settings being available.

1. Set up Family Sharing and Find My
Apple’s built-in way to view a child’s shared location is to add them to a Family Sharing group and enable Location Sharing. The organizer sets up sharing for the group, but each family member can choose whether to share. Apple says automatically shared child locations are visible to parents and guardians in the group. Apple Support explains how to share a location with a Family Sharing group.
- Set up a Family Sharing group, if your family does not already have one.
- On the child’s iPhone, open Settings > Family > Location Sharing and enable sharing with the family group. Apple also allows location sharing from the Find My app.
- Make sure Location Services is enabled on the iPhone. Location sharing requires it.
- Open Find My on your device and check the People view for the child’s shared location. Apple also says family locations can appear in Messages.
Apple Support states: “You can share your location in Settings or the Find My app, and you can stop sharing your location at any time.” A person can stop sharing, so the map should not be treated as a guaranteed feed.

2. Add location-change notifications
For specific check-ins—such as whether your child has arrived at school or left home—Find My can notify you when a family member arrives at or leaves a location. Apple also documents an alert for when a person is not at a place during a particular time. These are event-based notifications, not a promise of uninterrupted monitoring. Apple’s Family Sharing location instructions cover these options.
In Find My, select the family member and use the option to add a notification for an arrival, departure, or time-based absence. Choose the place and any available time or recurrence settings shown on your device. The exact options can depend on the current software and account conditions.

3. Use Screen Time to manage location-sharing settings
A parent or guardian in the Family Sharing group can manage a child’s device with Screen Time. Apple says that children and teens with Screen Time turned on may not be able to change their own location-sharing settings. Screen Time complements Find My; it does not show the child’s location. Use Screen Time when you need to manage a setting, not as a substitute for enabling Location Sharing. Apple’s available controls and child-account conditions can vary by region, so check the current instructions for your location and iOS versions.

Family location sharing is different from finding a lost iPhone
Routine location sharing lets you view a family member’s shared location. Lost-device recovery is a separate Find My task. For a missing iPhone, Find My can show whether the device is online or offline, play a sound, enable Lost Mode if a passcode was already set up, or remotely erase it. Those actions address the device, not ongoing family check-ins. Apple’s Find My and Family Sharing instructions describe the distinction and recovery options.

- Confirm the child is sharing their location with the Family Sharing group.
- Check that Location Services is on for the child’s iPhone.
- Review whether the child has stopped sharing or whether a Screen Time setting affects changes to location-sharing settings.
- For a missing device, use Find My’s device-recovery options rather than relying on the family member location view.
