3 Easy Android Privacy Features Worth Setting Up

Check recent permission use, share a less precise location, and spot camera or microphone activity with three approachable Android privacy features.

Android has simple controls for checking recent permission use, sharing a less precise location, and spotting camera or microphone activity. They answer different questions: what an app accessed recently, how accurately it can locate you, and whether it is using a sensor now. Availability and menu names vary by Android version and phone maker.

1. Privacy Dashboard: check recent permission activity

The Privacy Dashboard shows which apps accessed the permissions it tracks and when. To open it, go to Settings and look under Security and privacy or Privacy for Privacy dashboard. Choose a permission, such as location, camera, or microphone, to see the apps that used it; select an app to review or change its permission. If the labels differ, search for “Privacy dashboard” in Settings.

Google documents a history window of seven days on Android 13 and 24 hours on Android 12. This is a recent-activity view for the permissions shown, not a complete record of every privacy-relevant event or all app behavior. Google’s Privacy Dashboard instructions describe the feature.

2. Approximate location: give an app a broader area

When an app requests location access on a supported Android version, you may be able to allow approximate location rather than precise location. Google Play Help defines approximate location as an area greater than or equal to 3 square kilometers. That is a minimum area in the definition, not a promise that every result will match a city boundary or have the same size.

A weather app may be useful with a general area, while turn-by-turn navigation may need a more precise location; these are examples of differing needs, not claims about specific apps. To adjust access, open the app’s permissions in Settings, choose Location, and, where offered, switch off Use precise location. The exact labels and choices depend on the device and Android version. Google explains the approximate-location definition in its Data safety help.

Approximate permission is not Location Accuracy

The app permission controls how precise the location an app may receive can be. Location Accuracy is a separate device setting that helps estimate the device’s location using available sources such as GPS, Wi-Fi, cellular networks, and sensors. Changing one does not mean you have changed the other. See Google’s Location Accuracy explanation.

3. Camera and microphone indicator: identify access as it happens

On Android 12 and later, a green indicator at the top right appears when an app or service uses the camera or microphone. If it appears unexpectedly, swipe down and tap the indicator to identify what is using the sensor. Tap again to manage permissions, then review the identified app’s access if needed. Google’s camera and microphone indicator instructions describe these steps.

Android also offers device-wide Camera access and Microphone access controls in Quick Settings on supported devices. If the tiles are not visible, you may need to add them. Turning either control off can stop apps that need that sensor from working as expected; use the app-level permission settings when you want to restrict one app without disabling access for others. For permission changes, see Google Play’s app-permissions help.

Which control answers your question?

Control What it tells or changes Scope
Privacy Dashboard Recent activity for the permissions it shows History view; app permissions can be managed there
Approximate location Limits the location precision available to an app App-level permission
Camera or microphone indicator Shows when an app or service is using a sensor Live notice; permissions can be reviewed at app level
Camera access or Microphone access Enables or disables sensor access more broadly Device-wide control, where available

If your Settings menu does not match these paths, search Settings for the feature or permission name. Android’s security and privacy settings guidance notes that settings locations can vary by version.
