24/7 YouTube Streaming Cost: Raspberry Pi 5 vs. Cloud VM

A Pi 5 or cloud VM can feed a 24/7 YouTube stream, but the cheaper option depends on hardware, electricity, encoder settings, and outbound transfer. Compare the costs over a real operating period.

There is no universal monthly-cost winner. A Raspberry Pi 5 can avoid a recurring virtual-machine (VM) compute bill, but its full cost includes any hardware you need to buy, electricity, and a reliable home internet connection. A cloud VM has a recurring charge and may also incur outbound-data costs. At YouTube’s recommended 14 Mbps for 1080p30 H.264, a continuous 30-day stream represents about 4.54 decimal TB of video payload—well above the transfer allowances in the two example Amazon Lightsail plans discussed below.

To compare fairly, choose your stream settings and operating period, then add local equipment and power costs or the VM’s compute and transfer charges. The estimates below are arithmetic, not a quote for your particular electricity rate or cloud region.

What a fair cost comparison includes

Compare total cost over a defined period, not a Pi’s purchase price against one month of VM compute. Include only costs that apply to your setup, and distinguish an upfront purchase from recurring expenses.

Cost or requirement Raspberry Pi 5 at home Cloud VM
Compute or hardware Pi board and required accessories if you do not already own them Recurring VM charge, based on region and instance plan
Power Electricity for the complete system, calculated from measured wall draw and your local tariff Included in the VM charge; the provider’s applicable plan and billing terms still matter
Video data Uses your home connection’s upload capacity and any relevant plan limits Outbound transfer may exceed the included allowance and may be billed separately
Storage and accessories Boot media, power supply, and cooling may be needed Check whether storage, IP addresses, or other services add charges
Operations Home power, internet, device maintenance, and recovery are your responsibility VM administration, stream recovery, and any required monitoring are your responsibility unless separately provided

For a Pi, estimate the cost over N months as hardware not already owned plus accessories plus N times the incremental electricity and internet cost. Treat ordinary broadband as incremental only if streaming changes your plan or bill. For a VM, add compute, applicable outbound transfer, and any required storage, IP, or software costs.

Calculate local electricity from your own measurement

Measure average wall draw for the complete running setup rather than assuming a wattage for the Pi board alone. Then use: monthly electricity = measured average wall watts ÷ 1,000 × 24 × days × local currency per kWh. The calculation depends on your meter reading, billing period, and local electricity rate; no universal power cost follows from the Pi’s specifications.

How much data does a 24/7 YouTube stream use?

For a constant bitrate, estimate decimal payload with: GB ≈ bitrate in Mbps × 3,600 × hours ÷ 8,000. YouTube’s encoder guidance lists 5 Mbps as the minimum and 14 Mbps as the recommended bitrate for H.264 at 1080p30. A 30-day month has 2,592,000 seconds.

Constant bitrate assumption 30-day payload estimate What it means for the cited Lightsail examples
5 Mbps About 1.62 decimal TB Exceeds the $5 plan’s listed 1 TB transfer allowance
14 Mbps About 4.54 decimal TB Exceeds the $7 plan’s listed 2 TB transfer allowance

These figures are calculations from the stated bitrate and hours, not provider measurements or an invoice. Actual traffic and billing can differ because of protocol overhead, restarts, and the provider’s transfer-counting rules. Check the terms for your region and any overage billing before treating a VM’s advertised compute price as its complete streaming cost.

What the example cloud VM prices do—and do not—tell you

Amazon Lightsail’s published Linux bundle table lists these examples:

Rank #3
CanaKit Raspberry Pi 5 Essentials Starter Kit (4GB RAM)
  • CanaKit Raspberry Pi 5 Essentials Starter Kit
Lightsail plan Listed monthly price Memory vCPUs Storage Transfer allowance
Plan 1 $5/month 0.5 GB 2 20 GB 1 TB
Plan 2 $7/month 1 GB 2 40 GB 2 TB

These are plan specifications, not evidence that either VM can encode your chosen video or sustain your particular workload. Lightsail says plans accrue hourly charges up to the monthly plan cap; its least expensive plan starts at $0.0067 per hour, with a $5 monthly cap. Stopping an instance does not stop charges: it must be deleted to stop accruing them. Confirm current prices and transfer rules for the region you will use.

A VM’s suitability depends on the actual source, encoder, preset, and stream settings. Do not infer encoding capacity from vCPU count alone. Include outbound transfer in the estimate: in the examples above, the calculated 30-day video payload alone is already greater than the listed allowance at either bitrate.

Can a Raspberry Pi 5 encode and stream 1080p?

Raspberry Pi 5 has a quad-core 2.4 GHz Arm Cortex-A76 CPU, but no hardware H.264 encoder; it relies on the libx264 software encoder. Raspberry Pi Ltd’s 2026 performance note reports real-time 1080p30 H.264 encoding under its tested settings: low-latency settings used as little as 60% of one CPU core, while its high-quality preset used approximately 100–150% of one core. In those tests, the high-quality setting also reported 2–3 dB higher PSNR than the Pi 4 hardware encoder at tested practical bitrates.

That benchmark is not a guarantee for every stream, nor does it establish uninterrupted 24/7 operation. Source footage, preset, overlays, audio and video capture, software, thermal conditions, and network reliability can change the result. Test your actual material and configuration and leave CPU headroom for the rest of the system.

Pi 5 Offers lightning-fast CPU speed, a PCI Express interface, a Real Time Clock (RTC) and a power button and runs significantly cooler than Pi 4.

Budget for a complete Pi setup

Pi 5 has no onboard storage and needs boot media, such as a microSD card. Raspberry Pi recommends a 27 W USB-C supply providing 5 V at 5 A. Its setup guidance says a 5 V, 3 A supply limits current available to peripherals to 600 mA. Raspberry Pi recommends active cooling for best performance; cooling choice and system power draw depend on the build and operating conditions.

For a new build, account for the Pi board, boot media, suitable power supply, and any cooling you choose. If you already own suitable hardware, count only the costs that are genuinely incremental to streaming.

Set YouTube’s encoder settings and plan for long runs

YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends RTMPS, constant bitrate encoding, and a two-second keyframe interval, not over four seconds. For H.264 at 1080p30, it lists 5 Mbps minimum and 14 Mbps recommended. Use these as YouTube’s guidance for that format, not as a bitrate rule for every resolution, frame rate, or codec. Test representative motion and audio, then monitor YouTube’s stream health.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Choose the destination stream in YouTube Live Control Room. Follow YouTube’s encoder setup instructions to obtain the server URL and stream key for that stream.
  2. Configure the encoder. Enter YouTube’s server URL and stream key. Use RTMPS where supported, configure constant bitrate, and set a two-second keyframe interval (never over four seconds, per YouTube guidance).
  3. Set a format-appropriate bitrate. For H.264 1080p30, YouTube lists 5 Mbps minimum and 14 Mbps recommended. Recalculate transfer if you change bitrate or run time.
  4. Test the actual program. Check representative video motion and audio, monitor stream health in YouTube, and verify the encoder and network remain stable before relying on the setup.
  5. Plan restarts and archives. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Its cited guidance does not promise one uninterrupted 24/7 broadcast, so decide how you will restart the encoder or stream and handle archive segmentation during long runs.

Choose based on ownership, transfer, and recovery needs

  • A Pi may suit you if you own or can economically assemble the hardware, your real-world test has adequate encoding headroom, and your home power and upload connection are reliable enough for the intended run.
  • A VM may suit you if you want the encoder hosted away from home and can verify compute capacity, regional pricing, outbound transfer, and recovery arrangements for your configuration.
  • Either route needs an operating plan for stream-key handling, YouTube health checks, failures, restarts, and archive management. Neither the Pi benchmark nor a VM plan’s headline price establishes 24/7 continuity by itself.

Or let it run in the cloud

If the goal is to keep uploaded videos playing on a YouTube channel without maintaining a Pi or VM, StreamNeo is an alternative: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It loops uploaded video from the cloud; it does not stream a live camera feed.

  • Nothing has to stay on at home.
  • Every slot streams your upload as made, at any quality up to 4K 60fps, for one flat price per slot.
  • It automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream.
  • The first day is free with no card, with one free day per account.

The monthly option is $9.99 per month. Each slot includes one always-on stream, 10 GB storage per slot pooled across active slots, 24/7 looping and playlists, and StreamNeo team support. Plans offer the same product; only the billing length changes. See StreamNeo or current plan details. Start the free first day.
