How Much Electricity Does a 24/7 YouTube Stream Use? Costs at Different Power Rates

A 100 W setup running 24/7 uses 72 kWh in 30 days. See how to estimate the cost at your rate, measure equipment draw, and separate PC power from video-delivery estimates.

Your 24/7 YouTube stream’s electricity cost depends on the equipment’s actual power draw and your local price per kilowatt-hour (kWh). For a steady 100-watt setup running for 30 days, the calculation is 72 kWh; at an illustrative rate of $0.20/kWh, that comes to $14.40 in energy charges. That is calculated from the stated assumptions, not a measurement of a particular streaming setup or a universal electricity rate.

Calculate the electricity cost of a 24/7 stream

Use the equipment’s power draw in watts, the number of hours it runs, and the applicable price per kWh:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  1. Convert watts to kilowatts by dividing by 1,000.
  2. Multiply kilowatts by runtime in hours to find energy use in kWh.
  3. Multiply kWh by your electricity rate to estimate the variable energy charge.

Formula: (watts ÷ 1,000) × hours × price per kWh = estimated electricity cost.

A 30-day month has 720 hours, so a constant load of P watts uses P × 0.72 kWh. A 365-day year has 8,760 hours. The U.S. Energy Information Administration explains the distinction: watts measure power, while watt-hours measure energy over time; its example of a 40 W load running for five hours uses 0.2 kWh. EIA: measuring electricity.

Watt Meter Power Meter Plug Home Electricity Usage Monitor 7 Modes Display
  • Various Monitoring Parameters: The power meter plug can monitor the power (W), energy (kWh), volts, amps, hertz, power factor, cost, minimum and maximum power (W), cumulative days and time of your appliances. By switching 7 display modes, you can easily know the various parameters while the appliance is working. The home energy monitor can also calculate and display how much power your appliance uses and how much electricity bill it cost in cumulative time
  • Upgraded LCD Display: With large screen size 2.36 inch x 1.85 inch, clearer monitor backlit, our electrical usage monitor can display the data clearer and more visible no matter day or night. 180°full wide viewing angles is great for reading and recording the data in any angles. No need to stand on the front of the display and bend over to read the numbers
  • Adjustable Backlight Time: Our upgraded watt meter has 5 options of backlight time. The default backlight time duration is 10 minutes(bL-0). If you want to change the backlight time, you can press and hold "UP" and "DOWN" button at the same time to enter backlight time setting, then press "UP" and "DOWN" to select the backlight time (bL-0 =10 minutes, bL-1=1 hour, bL-2=4 hours, bL-3=8 hours, bL-4=always on), finally press the "COST" to save the backlight time settings
  • Overload protection: When the power of the appliance exceeds the overload power, the LCD will display “OVERLOAD” to warn the user. All the buttons will quit working and can only be workable when you lower or remove the load power. The default overload power is 3680W and is adjustable from 0 to 3680W. In general, you need to set the overload power to 1800W before using. Just press the "function" button for more than 3 seconds to enter the setting
  • Data Memory Function: The wattage meter will record your power consumption data when you remove it from socket, or remove appliances from the electricity monitor. You can directly see the last data when you use it next time. This function can also automatically save the data when there is a sudden power failure

30-day costs at three example electricity rates

The following figures are scenario calculations for equipment running continuously for 720 hours. They are not measurements of a particular PC or stream.

Assumed continuous load Energy in 30 days At $0.10/kWh At $0.20/kWh At $0.30/kWh
50 W 36 kWh $3.60 $7.20 $10.80
100 W 72 kWh $7.20 $14.40 $21.60
200 W 144 kWh $14.40 $28.80 $43.20
300 W 216 kWh $21.60 $43.20 $64.80

For an exact annual-runtime estimate, multiply a constant load by 8,760 hours, then apply your rate. Multiplying a 30-day month by 12 assumes 360 days, not a 365-day year.

Use your actual equipment draw, not its maximum rating

Decide which devices belong in your estimate. A creator-side total might include the streaming computer, capture or encoding hardware, a monitor left on, and networking equipment. Include only what you want counted in the bill estimate.

A computer’s power-supply rating is not a measurement of its continuous wall draw. Use a measured reading or label an assumed wattage clearly. Because workload can vary, a brief instantaneous reading may not represent an entire day. Measure energy across a representative interval that includes the actual streaming workload, or calculate a time-weighted average. The EIA describes meters as instruments for measuring electricity use; a plug-in usage monitor is one category of device to investigate, though no specific model or listing is established here. Apply the rate on your electricity bill

The example rates are inputs, not standard prices. Use the applicable per-kWh energy rate on your own bill or tariff. If you are on a time-of-use or dynamic plan, calculate consumption separately for each period and apply that period’s price; the U.S. Department of Energy discusses these rate structures in its guidance on evaluating utility rate options.

Geography makes a substantial difference. The EIA reported 2025 annual average U.S. retail electricity prices ranging from 8.20¢/kWh in North Dakota to 35.72¢/kWh in Hawaii. These are state-level averages, not a substitute for your individual tariff. Your total bill may also include fixed charges, taxes, delivery charges, and other items, so the calculation here estimates the energy component rather than the complete bill. Keep creator electricity separate from video-delivery estimates

Studies described as the energy use of streaming video may include data centres, networks, and viewing devices—or only some of those components. They do not automatically describe the electricity used by the creator’s computer to transmit a live stream.

The International Energy Agency’s analysis estimated typical Netflix viewing in 2019 at about 0.077 kWh per viewing hour. The analysis, updated in 2020, emphasizes that the estimate depends on factors including device, network connection, and resolution. It is context about viewing and video delivery, not a measurement of a creator’s streaming PC. IEA analysis of streaming video’s carbon footprint.

The German Environment Agency reported about 2.3 W per stream for the data-centre component in its HD video-streaming case study; data transmission and local IT were excluded. That is not an all-in estimate for a YouTube broadcast or a household electricity bill. Umweltbundesamt: digital services and cloud computing.

Do not multiply an audience’s viewing hours by either figure and label the result the streamer’s electricity bill: that counts a different system boundary and different users’ electricity.

Or let it run in the cloud
