24/7 YouTube Stream Cost: Proxmox VM vs. Cloud VPS

A fair 24/7 YouTube streaming cost comparison starts with your real workload and bitrate, then adds measured home power or VPS transfer, hardware and operating effort.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

There is no universal cheaper option. A Proxmox VM can cost less to operate if you already have a suitable, low-power host and reliable home internet; a cloud VPS makes compute and outbound data explicit monthly costs. Compare the same stream workload, then add electricity or transfer charges, hardware, maintenance and the time needed to recover failures.

What actually determines the cost?

The key distinction is where the encoder runs. With self-hosting, a Proxmox VM runs on hardware at home, using your electricity and internet connection. With a VPS, the encoder runs on a provider’s infrastructure, and you pay for its plan and any applicable transfer, storage or other charges. In either case, you still configure the encoder, protect the YouTube stream key, monitor the stream and plan for failures.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

The encoder sends one contribution stream to YouTube. YouTube serves playback to viewers, so do not multiply VPS outbound traffic by your audience size when the VPS is only sending the stream to YouTube.

Calculate self-hosting cost

Estimate recurring operating cost as:

Measured average whole-host watts ÷ 1,000 × hours in the billing period × your electricity price per kWh + incremental hardware amortization and maintenance + incremental internet or backup-power cost + the value you assign to your time.

For arithmetic only, a host drawing 100 W continuously for 30 days uses 72 kWh: 0.1 kW × 24 hours × 30 days. Multiply 72 by your local electricity tariff. This is a calculation example, not a typical-host benchmark. Measure the whole system at the wall while it is doing the actual workload; a power-supply label or component TDP does not tell you its real draw.

Calculate VPS cost

Add the recurring VPS price to any applicable transfer, storage, IP, backup and monitoring charges, plus your time for setup and operation. Check how the provider counts traffic and whether the plan’s included outbound transfer covers the full month at your chosen bitrate. Keep one-off setup fees and hardware purchases separate from recurring bills; if you include a purchase in a monthly estimate, state the amortization period.

Estimate the stream’s bandwidth before choosing a plan

YouTube’s encoder recommendations provide a useful starting point for estimating sustained upload and monthly outbound volume. They are recommended video bitrates, not CPU requirements or guarantees that a plan is adequate. Include margin for audio, protocol overhead, reconnects and the provider’s traffic-accounting units.

Stream settings YouTube recommended video bitrate: AV1/H.265 YouTube recommended video bitrate: H.264 Approximate 30-day raw decimal traffic at that bitrate
1080p, 30 fps 10 Mbps 14 Mbps 3.24 TB at 10 Mbps; 4.536 TB at 14 Mbps
1080p, 60 fps 12 Mbps 17 Mbps 3.888 TB at 12 Mbps; 5.508 TB at 17 Mbps
1440p, 60 fps 24 Mbps 34 Mbps 7.776 TB at 24 Mbps; 11.016 TB at 34 Mbps
4K, 60 fps 35 Mbps 50 Mbps 11.34 TB at 35 Mbps; 16.2 TB at 50 Mbps

The monthly volumes are calculations from bitrate × 2,592,000 seconds ÷ 8, before protocol overhead, audio-accounting differences, retries and provider billing-unit definitions. A nominal allowance in GiB may not map exactly to decimal TB; check the provider’s metering rules and leave headroom.

YouTube Help recommends CBR, a two-second keyframe interval (not exceeding four seconds), and RTMPS. It states: “We recommend streaming to YouTube Live with RTMPS, a secure extension to the popular RTMP streaming video protocol.” See YouTube Help: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions (accessed 2026-10-03). YouTube also advises testing upload bitrate, testing with representative audio and motion before going live, and monitoring stream health.

Proxmox VM versus VPS: what you are paying for

Cost or operating factor Proxmox VM at home Cloud VPS
Compute and hardware Use spare capacity if available, but count incremental power, hardware wear, maintenance and any purchase made for the stream. Plan price buys a defined instance; the necessary size depends on whether you pass through encoded media or encode in real time.
Electricity and internet Ongoing host power and a reliable home upload path matter; add any incremental internet or backup-power cost. Compute is in the data center, but the plan’s outbound-transfer allowance and billing rules matter.
Setup and ongoing work You manage the Proxmox host, VM, encoder, local network, patching, monitoring and recovery. You still configure the VM and encoder, secure credentials, monitor the process and arrange recovery.
Failure exposure Home power, router, ISP and the host are relevant failure points. Provider account, region and network are relevant failure points, alongside your monitoring and restart logic.
Control and location Physical control may be preferable, but the server and its network are at home. The provider controls the infrastructure; data-center location and its control plane are part of the choice.

Neither arrangement is an uptime guarantee. A fair comparison includes who responds when the process, host, home internet or provider has a problem—not just electricity versus the advertised VM price.

Proxmox requirements are not encoder sizing

Proxmox VE’s official system requirements specify at least 2 GB RAM for Proxmox VE and its services, plus memory for guests. Its 1 GB minimum is for evaluation and testing, not production. The requirements recommend production-quality server hardware, fast and redundant storage, and redundant gigabit network interfaces. These recommendations do not establish the encoder’s CPU needs, wall power, upload quality or availability, and VM allocations do not guarantee dedicated hardware or encoding performance. See Proxmox VE system requirements.

Size the VPS for the actual workload

A prerecorded file already encoded to the intended stream settings may be passed through or remuxed; that can require substantially different compute from live capture or real-time transcoding. Filters, resolution, frame rate and encoder choice also affect the workload. Do not infer a minimum VPS size from a stream bitrate alone.

For a dated price reference, DigitalOcean’s pricing page, accessed 2026-10-03, lists Basic Droplet examples: $4/month for 1 vCPU, 512 MiB memory, 500 GiB transfer and 10 GiB SSD; $6/month for 1 vCPU, 1 GiB memory, 1,000 GiB transfer and 25 GiB SSD; $12/month for 1 vCPU, 2 GiB memory, 2,000 GiB transfer and 50 GiB SSD; and $24/month for 2 vCPUs, 4 GiB memory, 4,000 GiB transfer and 80 GiB SSD. These are published entry-level plan examples, not evidence that any is adequate for your stream. At an illustrative 12 Mbps, 4,000 GiB may be near the calculated monthly volume depending on units and overhead. Check current prices, region, tax treatment and transfer metering at DigitalOcean Droplet pricing.

DigitalOcean says per-second Droplet billing took effect January 1, 2026; this does not mean a VM kept allocated for a whole month costs only for the seconds it is encoding. Its pricing page describes CPU-optimized Droplets as intended for consistent CPU workloads such as media streaming. Whether that class is warranted depends on the actual encoding workload; no minimum instance size is established here.

Hetzner’s official price-adjustment page says its 2026 adjustment took effect June 15, 2026, and lists a CAX11 at €5.99/month excluding IPv4 after the adjustment. That example is product-, region- and tax-scoped; dedicated servers are different products and should not be compared as if they were equivalent VMs. Check the current region and sales configuration on Hetzner’s 2026 price adjustment page.

Make the comparison fair

  1. Define the workload. Record whether you are streaming live capture, software- or hardware-encoded content, a pre-rendered file passed through, or an automated loop. Set the target resolution, frame rate, codec and bitrate.
  2. Measure the home option. Measure whole-host wall power during the representative stream workload. Confirm the sustained upload path and include the actual electricity tariff, incremental hardware costs and any backup-power or internet expenses.
  3. Check the VPS plan, not just its headline price. Compare CPU and memory for the workload, included outbound data, storage, IP and other charges, region and taxes. Verify the billing unit and transfer-counting policy with the provider.
  4. Price the operational work. Account for updates, key security, monitoring, automated restart, backups and recovery. Decide who will respond to a failure and how quickly.
  5. Compare equivalent outcomes. Calculate recurring cash cost for the same bitrate and period, separate initial purchases from ongoing bills, and show any hardware amortization period. Add a separate estimate of maintenance time rather than hiding it in a speculative dollar figure.

Plan for YouTube and stream failures

Test the complete setup before relying on it for a continuous broadcast. Use representative audio and motion, verify that the home or VPS upload remains comfortably above the chosen output bitrate, and watch YouTube’s stream-health indicators. Protect the stream key as a credential; restrict access to it and rotate it if exposed. Keep a documented restart path and decide whether a watchdog or alerting system will notify you when the encoder stops. Automated restarts can help with a stopped process, but cannot restore a failed ISP, host or provider account by themselves.

For prerecorded loops, also check that you have rights to every video and audio element. A technically continuous stream does not itself establish compliance with YouTube copyright rules or its monetization policies, including rules addressing reused content. See YouTube copyright policies and YouTube channel monetization policies.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your channel runs prerecorded videos or a playlist, StreamNeo is a managed YouTube-only option to consider instead of administering a Proxmox VM or VPS. Upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, then go live. It loops the uploaded video from the cloud, so no computer or home connection has to stay on. It does not stream from a camera.

  • There is one flat price per slot for any uploaded quality up to 4K 60 fps, with no re-encode or quality tiers.
  • Each slot includes one always-on stream, 10 GB of storage per slot pooled across active slots, 24/7 looping and playlists, automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream, and support from the StreamNeo team.
  • The first day is free with no card, once per account. After that, billing can be for a day, a week, a month, 6 months or a year; cancel any time. UPI and cards are accepted in India; card checkout is available worldwide. Contact support for 5 or more slots.

Monthly: $9.99 per month. For a prerecorded loop, this trades server setup and home power dependence for a managed service fee; it does not establish that StreamNeo is the cheapest option for every channel. See StreamNeo and current plan details. To try it, start the free first day.
