Capture a full page with the CaptureKit API
- Get an API key. Send it as the
x-api-keyrequest header, as described in the CaptureKit API reference. - Request the target page. Set the webpage URL and
full_page=true. The reference says this option defaults tofalse, which captures only the visible viewport. - Enable scrolling if needed. Set
full_page_scroll=truefor pages that reveal content as the browser scrolls. This option also defaults tofalse; the documented default scroll duration is 400 milliseconds. - Choose output and timing options. Select PNG, JPEG/JPG, WebP, or PDF if PNG is not suitable. Adjust the viewport, scale factor, delay, wait-until condition, or wait-for-selector where the page needs different dimensions or readiness timing. The API reference documents defaults of 1280×1024 for the viewport, 1 for scale factor, and zero seconds for delay.
- Save the result. The API returns a screenshot URL. Fetch that URL and write the response bytes to a local file; the CaptureKit playbook describes this pattern and provides language examples.
Exact request syntax depends on the endpoint documentation and the language or HTTP client you use. Consult the current API reference for its request schema, accepted parameter values, and response fields before integrating it. The reference lists the screenshot endpoint at one credit per call; credit consumption and defaults are product details that may change.

Make sure scroll-loaded content has time to appear
full_page=true asks for the entire page rather than the current viewport. It does not, by itself, mean every page will reveal all content that depends on scrolling. For lazy-loaded images or sections, enable full_page_scroll=true and use the documented scroll-duration setting if the page needs more time between scrolls. Site-specific scripts and loading behavior can still affect what appears in the final capture.

A fixed delay can help with known slow content, but adds waiting time to every request using it; prefer a condition tied to the page when the API supports one and you know which condition indicates readiness.

Choose between the API and the Chrome extension
Use the API when you need repeatable, programmatic captures or an integration. Use the Chrome extension when you want an interactive capture-and-edit workflow in Chrome. These are separate workflows; do not assume the extension shares the API’s parameters or defaults.

Common problems and fixes
- The image shows only the viewport: Confirm that the request sets
full_page=true; it is off by default in the API reference. - Lazy images or sections are missing: Enable
full_page_scroll=true. If needed, adjustfull_page_scroll_durationso the page has more time to load content as it scrolls. Results can vary by site. - The API rejects authentication: Check that the key is valid and is sent in the
x-api-keyheader, rather than being omitted or placed in a different header. - The result is the wrong size or format: Check the requested viewport, scale factor, and output format against the current API reference. The documented defaults are 1280×1024, scale factor 1, and PNG output.
- The page is captured before it is ready: Use an appropriate wait-until condition, wait-for-selector, or delay. Choose a selector that actually appears on the target page.
- The capture request succeeds but no local file appears: The API workflow returns a screenshot URL; fetch that URL and save its response bytes rather than treating the initial API response as necessarily the image file.

No. The API reference documents full_page as false by default.

Can I save a CaptureKit API result directly as a file?
The documented playbook pattern is to fetch the screenshot URL returned by the API and write its response bytes to a file.
