Use page.setViewport() and pass the viewport width and height in CSS pixels. Set it before page.goto() so the page’s first load uses the dimensions you want to test.
Set a custom mobile-sized viewport
This example uses 390 × 844 CSS pixels as an illustrative test size, not a universal phone standard. isMobile and hasTouch are optional: include them when the page behavior you are testing depends on mobile viewport handling or touch support.

const puppeteer = require('puppeteer');
(async () => {
const browser = await puppeteer.launch();
try {
const page = await browser.newPage();
await page.setViewport({
width: 390,
height: 844,
deviceScaleFactor: 1,
isMobile: true,
hasTouch: true,
});
await page.goto('https://example.com');
// Run assertions or capture a screenshot here.
} finally {
await browser.close();
}
})();
The official Puppeteer Page.setViewport() documentation recommends setting the viewport before navigating. Changing it after navigation can produce behavior the site does not expect, and setting isMobile or hasTouch can reload the page in some cases.
Choose the settings that match your test
The viewport API takes an object. The dimensions are in CSS pixels; they are not physical screen pixels.

| Option | What it controls | When to set it |
|---|---|---|
width, height |
Viewport dimensions in CSS pixels. | Set the layout size or responsive breakpoint you need to test. |
deviceScaleFactor |
The emulated device scale factor. | Set it when your test needs to account for a particular rendering scale. |
isMobile |
Whether the page’s meta viewport tag is taken into account. | Enable it if the behavior under test depends on mobile viewport handling. |
hasTouch |
Whether the viewport supports touch events. | Enable it when testing touch-dependent interactions. |
isLandscape |
Whether the emulated viewport is landscape. | Set it when orientation is part of the test. |
For a breakpoint check, dimensions alone may be enough. Mobile flags describe additional emulated behavior; they are not mandatory for every responsive-layout test. Puppeteer documents these settings in its Viewport interface.
Emulate a named device instead
Use page.emulate() when the test calls for a Puppeteer device profile rather than just a chosen layout size. For example, Puppeteer documents selecting a profile from KnownDevices:

const puppeteer = require('puppeteer');
const { KnownDevices } = require('puppeteer');
(async () => {
const browser = await puppeteer.launch();
try {
const page = await browser.newPage();
const device = KnownDevices['iPhone 17 Pro'];
await page.emulate(device);
await page.goto('https://example.com');
} finally {
await browser.close();
}
})();
page.emulate() applies the selected device’s metrics and user agent. Puppeteer documents it as a shortcut for setting the user agent and viewport together. Choose this when those profile settings matter; use setViewport() when you need direct control over dimensions and selected flags. See the official Page.emulate() documentation for the device-profile method.

Each page in a browser can have its own viewport. page.viewport() reports the viewport settings last set on that page, or the default viewport from the browser connection options; it does not verify the actual viewport.

What viewport emulation does—and does not—mean
Setting dimensions tests a page at a CSS-pixel viewport size. Adding mobile flags or selecting a named device profile changes other emulated settings, but viewport configuration alone does not reproduce every aspect of a physical phone. Make the configuration explicit in your test so the result is reproducible.
Troubleshooting viewport tests
- The layout does not match the expected mobile breakpoint: Confirm the intended width is passed in CSS pixels, and set the viewport before navigation. If the page depends on its meta viewport tag, test with
isMobile: true. - Touch interactions are missing: Set
hasTouch: truewhen touch-event support is part of the scenario. A mobile-sized viewport by itself does not enable that flag. - The page changes or reloads after setting mobile options: Apply viewport settings before
goto(). Puppeteer notes that changing properties such asisMobileorhasTouchmay reload the page in some cases. page.viewport()shows a size, but you need to verify rendered behavior: That method returns configured viewport settings, not a measurement of the browser’s actual viewport. Check the page behavior your test cares about rather than treating the getter as an actual-rendering probe.- You need a known device configuration, not just dimensions: Use a profile from
KnownDeviceswithpage.emulate(), which also applies a user agent.
