1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThere is no universal monthly-cost winner between an AMD Ryzen mini PC and a rented server for a 24/7 YouTube stream. The answer depends on the mini PC’s measured power use while streaming, your electricity rate, the stream bitrate, and the rented server’s current price and outbound-data allowance. Measure and calculate those inputs before comparing; also weigh the power, network, recovery, and administration each option requires.
Calculate the mini PC’s monthly electricity cost
Use the whole system’s measured draw while it is running the intended stream—not the processor’s rated power or an idle reading.

Electricity cost = (watts ÷ 1,000) × hours × electricity tariff per kWh.
Recommended Free Tools
For a 30-day month, use 720 hours. For example, if your meter reads W watts and your tariff is T per kWh, the calculation is (W ÷ 1,000) × 720 × T. The result is an estimate for that billing period, not a general mini-PC price.

- Measure at the wall with a plug-in electricity usage monitor or wall-plug power meter while the encoder is doing the actual work.
- Include a router, display, or other equipment only if it is on because of the stream and you are assigning its electricity to the stream.
- Add hardware purchase cost allocation, incremental internet charges, backup power, and maintenance only when they apply to your setup.
StreamNeo published an India-focused worked example using an assumed dedicated-PC draw of 120–200 W, which it calculated as roughly ₹605–₹1,152 for 30 days. Those are vendor-published example figures, not a measurement of an AMD Ryzen mini PC or a generally applicable electricity bill. Your own wall-meter reading and tariff are the relevant inputs.
Estimate the rented server’s outbound data
A 24/7 stream uses bandwidth even when the audience is small. For a constant bitrate, approximate monthly outbound data over 30 days as:
Monthly GB ≈ bitrate in Mbps × 324.
This is decimal data based on 30 days of continuous transmission. It excludes protocol overhead, restarts, and unrelated server traffic. At 6 Mbps, the estimate is about 1.94 TB; at 10 Mbps, about 3.24 TB. Check the chosen plan’s outbound allowance and overage rules for the server’s location.

YouTube automatically transcodes an incoming live feed into multiple output formats, so audience size does not multiply the encoder’s outgoing ingest bitrate for this calculation. The relevant outbound stream is the feed sent from your PC or server to YouTube.
Compare the costs without assuming a universal winner
| Cost or factor | AMD Ryzen mini PC at home | Rented server |
|---|---|---|
| Recurring power or hosting | Measured whole-system watts × 720 hours × your electricity tariff per kWh, for a 30-day month. | Current recurring price for the specific plan, region, and billing term; no universal price is established here. |
| Outbound data | Usually part of your home internet service; include an incremental charge only if your ISP applies one. | Compare estimated stream data with the selected plan’s outbound allowance and overage policy. |
| Other possible costs | Hardware allocation, backup power, maintenance, or incremental connectivity, if applicable. | Setup or other charges, transfer overage, and extra compute if the plan cannot sustain the encode. |
| Where the encoder runs | Your home; depends on local power, router, and ISP connection. | The hosting provider’s facility and network; requires server administration. |
| Who handles operations | You handle the operating system, encoder, monitoring, and recovery. | You handle server setup and administration; the provider supplies the hosted infrastructure. |
To compare cash totals, add the applicable figures in each column for the same period. A rented server’s total is its current recurring plan price plus applicable transfer overage, setup, and other relevant charges. Check the terms for the exact region and plan rather than treating one provider’s allowance as universal.
As one provider-specific example, Hetzner’s traffic documentation, last changed May 21, 2024, lists 20 TB of monthly traffic for EU CX and CPX cloud servers, variable allowances for some US and Singapore cloud plans, and unlimited traffic for dedicated servers. These are provider and location terms that can change, not a market-wide rule or a price comparison.

Choose a bitrate and verify the encoder can sustain it
The bitrate affects both the data estimate and the encoder workload. YouTube’s official encoder guidance recommends H.264 bitrates of 10 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 12 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps. Recommendations vary by codec and frame rate; use YouTube’s current table for the exact format you plan to send.
YouTube recommends RTMPS and identifies H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 among video codec options. The chosen mini-PC or server hardware and encoding software must support the codec and settings you actually use. Do not assume a CPU or GPU can hold a particular resolution, frame rate, and bitrate continuously without testing.
Workload matters. A prerecorded loop sent with little processing may need less compute than a scene-heavy encode or a live-produced broadcast. Test the actual content and encoding configuration on the intended machine before committing to a plan.

Compare dependencies, operations, and recovery
- Home mini PC: the stream depends on your home mains power, router, ISP, and the PC staying operational. You are responsible for encoder supervision, OS updates, monitoring stream health, and restarting after interruptions. Backup power or network can reduce some dependencies but adds cost and setup.
- Rented server: the encoder is off your home network, but the service still depends on the provider’s network and hosting region. You pay recurring hosting costs, must check transfer terms, and remain responsible for server administration and stream recovery.
- Either choice: neither option guarantees uninterrupted streaming. Decide how you will detect a dropped stream and return it, and test that recovery process before relying on a continuous broadcast.
Test the full stream before leaving it unattended
- Measure the local option: record whole-system wall draw while the mini PC runs the intended encode. Use a representative workload rather than an idle state.
- Select the stream settings: choose resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate using YouTube’s current encoder recommendations and the capabilities of your actual hardware and software.
- Check upload capacity: run a speed test and ensure the connection can sustain the intended outgoing bitrate.
- Calculate data use: estimate 30-day outbound volume with bitrate in Mbps × 324, then compare it with the rented plan’s applicable allowance and overage policy.
- Price both setups: calculate electricity using your tariff and measured watts; obtain the current server price and relevant transfer, setup, and compute costs for the region you would use.
- Run a realistic pre-stream test: YouTube Help says, “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.” Include audio and movement similar to the planned content, then monitor stream health during the event.
- Check recovery: verify what happens after an internet interruption, power loss, encoder failure, or dropped YouTube connection, and establish how you will restart the stream.
Or let it run in the cloud
For a prerecorded YouTube loop, StreamNeo is a managed alternative to operating a home PC or administering a rented server. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live; StreamNeo loops the uploaded video from the cloud. Nothing has to stay on at home, it plays the video as uploaded up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. The monthly option is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo streams to YouTube and plays uploaded videos; it does not go live from a camera. Learn more at StreamNeo, or start the free day.
Make the decision from your own numbers
A mini PC is the lower-cost choice only if its measured electricity and other relevant local costs come in below the server’s actual rent and applicable extras—and if you are comfortable relying on home power and connectivity and managing the encoder. A rented server may suit you better when moving the encoder off the home network is worth the hosting expense and server administration. Measure, price the exact plans, and test the intended stream before deciding.
