The PDP-1 is a plausible home for a Lunar Lander programming challenge: it was an interactive 18-bit computer, and its Type 30 display drew images by plotting x-y coordinates. But the event details behind the title are not verified. No authoritative source located for this article confirms an organizer, schedule, rules, programming language, or required machine.
What is confirmed about the 2026 challenge?
The title presents a 2026 retrocomputing challenge to implement Lunar Lander on a PDP-1. The available project and museum sources do not confirm that a formally organized event exists, or specify how a participant would enter. Treat the event, its date, and its requirements as unverified rather than assuming a particular emulator, replica, language, control scheme, or scoring system.

The PiDP-1 project is relevant background: it describes a Raspberry Pi-driven replica intended to reproduce the PDP-1 experience and support programming on the platform. Its page discusses paleogaming and Lunar Lander, including the possibility of a developer’s game appearing in a future release. That discussion is not a challenge specification and does not establish that this challenge uses PiDP-1. PiDP-1 project.
Why the PDP-1 makes an interesting target
An early interactive computer
The Computer History Museum describes the PDP-1 as an early commercial interactive computer launched in 1959 and DEC’s first computer. Its exhibit reports that about 50 were produced. The machine used 18-bit words and magnetic core memory, with 4K words expandable to 16K. These are figures from the museum’s undated exhibit; they are not specifications for any particular challenge setup. Computer History Museum: PDP-1 exhibit.

A coordinate-based display
The PDP-1’s Type 30 CRT was an x-y display: it plotted points at specified coordinates, and a program could form shapes from points and lines. The Computer History Museum identifies Ben Gurley, the PDP-1’s system architect and logic designer, as the Type 30’s designer. For a lander game, that display description suggests a natural graphics approach: plot the terrain, craft, and other scene elements as coordinates or line segments. This is an implementation inference, not evidence of the challenge’s code or graphics routines. Computer History Museum: Type 30 display.
Do not conflate PDP-1 and PDP-11 Lunar Lander histories
A Computer History Museum archive credits Jack Burness with writing a well-known Lunar Lander for the January 1973 PDP-11/GT40 product introduction. That is a separate computer and historical reference; it does not establish the origin of Lunar Lander on the PDP-1, or show that a 2026 PDP-1 challenge is a port of Burness’s game. What prospective participants should wait to learn
Until an organizer publishes rules, there is no verified basis for choosing a required implementation route. A useful announcement would need to say which machine or replica is accepted, how the display and input are handled, what language or toolchain is permitted, and what constitutes a successful submission. Those are questions to resolve from official event information, not assumptions to infer from the PDP-1’s capabilities or the PiDP-1 project.
