Only two games in the available evidence clearly fit the idea of a distinctive single-player shooter that underperformed or was overlooked at launch: Titanfall 2 and Spec Ops: The Line. The second is a third-person shooter, not an FPS, so this is not a defensible five-game list. Rather than pad it with unsupported picks, here is what the evidence supports—and where the genre boundary matters.
Titanfall 2: a standout campaign that arrived between blockbuster shooters
Titanfall 2 is the clearest match for a strict single-player FPS recommendation. It launched on October 28, 2016, between Battlefield 1 on October 21 and Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare on November 4. Respawn CEO Vince Zampella later said the game sold well, but not as well as it should have; he pointed to its crowded release window and aggressive pricing as possible factors. That is evidence of sales falling short of expectations—not that nobody played it. GameSpot reported Zampella’s comments.

The campaign was not an afterthought. Respawn wanted to make a single-player story and prototyped more than 100 action blocks while developing it. The result follows pilot Jack Cooper and Titan BT-7274 through a campaign built around their partnership. Xbox Wire’s developer feature describes the design process and story focus.

Game Informer described the campaign as roughly seven hours long and praised its mix of shooting, platforming, puzzles, and humor. Those varied encounters make it a useful pick for someone asking for a single-player game with a good campaign, rather than only a multiplayer shooter with a story mode. Spec Ops: The Line: a notable campaign, but not an FPS
Spec Ops: The Line offers a different reason to revisit an overlooked shooter: its story challenges familiar military-shooter conventions. Its launch was not a commercial success, according to Wired, but the game later gained cult-classic recognition and remained part of cultural discussion. A 2024 academic article suggests that saturation and fatigue around military shooters may have contributed to its relatively poor launch sales; that is an interpretation of the market, not a definitive explanation of the game’s performance. Wired’s interview with director Cory Davis covers the game’s later reputation and themes; the British Journal for Military History article discusses the genre context.
The important qualification is perspective: Spec Ops: The Line is a third-person shooter. It belongs in a broader list of single-player shooter campaigns, but not in a list that strictly promises first-person shooters.

Can you still play it?
Wired reported that the game had been removed from digital storefronts and that people who own physical copies could still play it. Store listings and compatibility can change, and that report does not establish current availability on every platform. Check the relevant platform’s current store and confirm that a physical edition works on your hardware before buying.

Why this is not a five-game list
Prey (2017) is a plausible recommendation for a distinctive single-player FPS: Bethesda describes it as a mix of shooter, RPG, and adventure, set aboard the Talos I space station, with exploration, combat, powers, and player choice. The official description identifies releases for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC. But it does not establish that the game was little-played at launch or later rediscovered, so that part of this title’s premise cannot be attached to it responsibly. Bethesda’s official Prey page describes the game and its platforms.

- PLAY WORRY FREE FOR 12 MONTHS: We're so confident in our quality that all Pro Single Shot games come with a best-in-class 365-day manufacturer's warranty
The evidence supports one strict FPS entry and one adjacent third-person shooter—not five games that meet all three conditions: single-player, first-person, and overlooked or commercially disappointing at launch. Adding titles based only on a reputation for being forgotten would make the list less useful, not more complete.
