Gmail documents that it may ignore unsupported CSS, and Salesforce notes that SVG support varies across email clients. Outlook Classic has a separate constraint: it uses a Word-based HTML engine with limited support for standard CSS margins and padding. For dependable email, keep the essential content in simple, accessible markup and treat SVG and advanced layout CSS as enhancements—not requirements.
Why an SVG logo may disappear in Gmail
SVG behavior in email is inconsistent; it is too broad to say that every Gmail version always deletes every SVG. Salesforce says SVG extensions do not always have full support in email clients and specifically documents that Gmail does not send SVG images inserted by URL through its composer. A practitioner account separately reports that Gmail strips inline SVG. Those are different behaviors and sources, so neither should be treated as a universal rule for every sending method or recipient client.

For a logo that needs to display broadly, use a hosted raster image such as PNG rather than making SVG the only option. This is a compatibility choice, not a guarantee that the image will load: recipients can block remote images. Google recommends alt text when images may not render and for people using screen readers. If adjacent text already gives the brand name, make the alternative text fit the reading order rather than repeating it unnecessarily. Keep essential message information in text, not only inside the image.

Why flexbox is a risky email-layout dependency
Flexbox is designed for browser layout, but broad email compatibility is a different target. The available sources do not establish that every Gmail product rejects flexbox. A practitioner account describes flexbox problems in Gmail and the limitations of Outlook’s Word-based engine; use that as a warning about relying on flexbox, not as a universal support matrix.
For a header whose order and alignment matter, use a simple table layout and put spacing on table cells. Microsoft specifically recommends table-cell padding as a more reliable way to create spacing in Outlook Classic. Avoid making the header’s meaning depend on flexbox or CSS gap: if those styles are ignored, a table-based structure gives content a more predictable fallback.

What Outlook means—and why the version matters
“Outlook” covers distinct products, so a rendering problem in one does not prove that all Outlook clients behave the same way. Microsoft’s guidance applies specifically to Outlook Classic: it “uses a Word-based HTML processing engine that has limited support for standard CSS margins and padding on HTML elements.” Microsoft recommends using padding on table layout cells to create more reliable spacing.
Microsoft also recommends inline CSS for custom email and testing across clients. Inline styles are useful, but they do not make unsupported properties work or guarantee identical rendering. Gmail supports inline style blocks and standard CSS while warning that unsupported properties and selectors may be ignored; consult its supported-property reference rather than assuming browser behavior.

Background images need particular care. Microsoft advises avoiding them when reliable visibility matters; its Outlook Classic guidance also notes that VML is required for backgrounds in that environment. Do not put essential text or instructions solely in a background image.
Choose a layout strategy for your audience
| Approach | Best fit | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Compatibility-first | Messages where predictable structure, spacing, and content visibility matter—especially when Outlook Classic is in scope. | Use simple tables, table-cell padding, inline CSS where suitable, and raster images with useful text alternatives. The layout is less dependent on newer CSS behavior, but still needs testing because remote images can be blocked. |
| Progressive enhancement | Decorative or nonessential visual effects that can safely disappear without hiding meaning. | Use broadly supported markup for the base message, then add enhancements such as SVG or advanced CSS where supported. This can improve visual fidelity in capable clients, at the cost of more cross-client QA. |
This is a practical trade-off, not a benchmark: weigh appearance in target clients against graceful behavior when CSS or images fail, accessibility, and maintenance effort.

How to make the email more resilient
- Keep the core message in text. Make sure the recipient can understand the message if the logo or another remote image does not load. Add image alt text when it conveys information; Google explains this recommendation in its branded email layout help.
- Use a raster logo fallback. A hosted PNG is a defensible choice where SVG support is unreliable. Give it an appropriate text alternative, taking care not to duplicate adjacent brand text.
- Build essential alignment with tables. Use a simple table structure for important headers and table-cell padding for spacing. Do not make the content’s order or meaning depend on flexbox or CSS gap.
- Use CSS with a fallback in mind. Inline custom CSS where appropriate, but verify properties against Gmail’s supported CSS guidance. Inline styling is not a promise of matching output in Gmail and Outlook.
- Test the sent HTML in the clients that matter. Check Gmail and the relevant Outlook products separately; a browser preview is not a substitute. Microsoft recommends validating custom email code across clients.
- Offer a web version when rendering issues could hide content. Microsoft recommends linking to a web-hosted version for recipients who experience rendering problems.
