For an Apple TV that runs tvOS 17 or later, the simplest option is usually a provider’s native app. ExpressVPN, Surfshark, and NordVPN each document an Apple TV app setup. If your model cannot run a supported app, a VPN-capable router may be an alternative; SmartDNS is another option from some providers, but it does not provide the same privacy protection as a VPN connection.
The available setup documentation establishes compatibility and installation paths—not which service is fastest, best at streaming, or cheapest. Choose by your Apple TV’s software, the setup you are willing to manage, and the provider’s privacy practices.

How to choose the right setup for your Apple TV
1. Check your Apple TV and tvOS version
Start with the exact Apple TV model and its installed tvOS version. ExpressVPN and Surfshark specify tvOS 17 or later for their documented native apps. If your device cannot run that version, compare router support or any provider-supported alternative rather than assuming an app will be available.

2. Prefer a native app when it fits
A native app is generally the most direct route: install it on Apple TV, sign in, and choose a server location. Follow the provider’s current setup steps; Surfshark’s instructions also require an active subscription.
3. Consider a VPN router for older models
A router configured to use a VPN can route traffic for connected devices, including an Apple TV. ExpressVPN documents its service with GL.iNet Fortify: connect the Apple TV to the router and choose a VPN server. The documented feature requires an active ExpressVPN subscription. Router setup can be more involved than installing an app, and the provider’s compatibility notes should be checked before choosing hardware.

4. Treat SmartDNS as a different tool
SmartDNS changes DNS handling for some streaming access; it is not an encrypted VPN tunnel. NordVPN says SmartDNS does not protect a device as a VPN connection does and may not work with every streaming service. ExpressVPN describes MediaStreamer similarly: it is intended to improve streaming but does not provide VPN privacy and security benefits. Surfshark’s support page says its SmartDNS feature has been discontinued.
What a VPN does—and what it does not guarantee
A VPN can encrypt and route certain device traffic, and may hide your IP address from services you visit. Apple notes that some traffic needed for essential system services may occur outside a VPN. Apple also warns that an active VPN provider may be able to see, intercept, and modify online activity, and advises: “It is important that you only use a VPN service you trust.” Review the provider’s privacy practices before connecting.

Apple’s security guide, published January 28, 2026, lists VPN technologies supported on tvOS, including SSL-VPN through an appropriate App Store client and IKEv2/IPsec. What to verify before subscribing
- That your specific Apple TV model and tvOS version support the provider’s app, or that you have a workable router-based alternative.
- Whether the proposed method is a VPN connection or DNS-only service, and what privacy protection it actually provides.
- That the streaming app and service you care about work with the proposed setup; setup documentation alone does not establish access or guarantee it.
